Politics:The sore that never heals

Any one ever feel that politics is a sore that never heals? It seams to me that about 99.997% of political debates often end in people getting loud, mad, and frustrated. It also seams to me that most debates turn into two sides trying to get the other person to agree with them and only ends in the two sides agreeing to disagree.

So in other words :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Yeah, politics is really frustrating. It's like, I know I'm always right, but these other morons just can't seem to work up the brainpower to think the issues through and agree with me. :p

It's exacerbated by the people who come here - the political sites attract a certain personality type. Idealists, largely, but certainly people who care deeply about beliefs or methods. Pragmatists tend toward the right and idealists toward the left, I think.

Ironically, I suspect that many people who debate here would actually make poor political leaders in the real world, for the ability to compromise is not in them.

I'm curious whether the extremists on NS General have trouble playing well with others in real life. True, the internet is an anonymous place and people act differently here than they would in a social situation. Some, usually extremists, clearly have less ability to convince and debate than others, preferring to shout, flame, and posture - I'm curious if that's lack of personal skills or just the internet.

I always said that people who enter into politics and/or political debate are not people whom I associate with. Politics is just a stupid thing for people who don't have any real hobbies or a life. If my children ever tried to get into politics, I'd disown them. :p

I presume you mean on NS or other political forums?

How many people feel that politics is a sore point in real life, not just on NS? Does it interfere with your relationships at home and at work/school? Do your political views cause you to see opponents as adversaries, enemies, or idiots? Do you avoid interacting with people who disagree with your political perspective? Do you personally identify with your party's ideology, i.e. look for opportunities to say "I'm a [insert ideology/party here]"?

I don't think that you can make such generalisations. Look at Deleuze or Drunk Commies, who are on the left, but very pragmatic. Then take Melkor Unchained or Blu-tac, who are on the right, but mind-blowingly idealistic.

Fair enough, I shouldn't have said that since I'm new here and don't know all the players - and thanks for pointing that out. I think most people I know would consider me a practical person in RL, I admire that quality in others and seek it in people here.

I did want to make some generalizations to keep the conversation flowing. I'm not that experienced on political forums, so my thoughts come from a slightly different perspective than regulars here- naive or refreshing, take your pick.

Well said.

On the debaters making poor political leaders... you are correct, but then political leaders aren't necessarily debaters. To lead, especially in democratic style governments, one must have connections and be able to rally people around you. It's more about demagoguery than debate.

I think a lot of NSers would make excellent legislators however.

And speaking personally, I have to admit a lot of the time I'm not even looking to compromise or convince others. I wouldn't make a good leader cuz I'm not into leading, however.

How's that?

Can't say the same, and I've held elected office. Though it can be interesting and satisfying.

I helped campaign for about half a dozen candidates in '04. I distributed signs, flyers, printed flyers, protested, marched, and such.

I hope to be a politician, but I would probably become a tyrant.

I hope to be a politician, but I would probably become a tyrant.

Go for it! Have you considered getting started at the entry level, say municipal or university (not sure what your status in life is)?

I would note that the system is generally designed to prevent tyrants, which may be either good news or bad, depending on your perspective. Wannabee tyrants get frustrated quickly.

Same system requires, among other things, the ability to compromise and work with others. I made the point earlier that many NS'ers might not do well in RL politics because of this, haven't heard any disagreement yet. Of course true for the general population of the world as well, but most of them are'nt interested in the topic.

Sometimes I wonder why I post here, considering how much I hate politics and what it does to generally level-headed individuals.

Hell, I don't even know what the hell I am considered. Republican? Democrat? Pfft. I didn't even vote. At least I don't complain about the current state of our political progress.
