Yes - that's right folks, another VS. thread for the General forum! Aren't you all so lucky?!

Which series is your favourite, and why? Who is your favourite character, what is your favourite episode?

I'll answer shortly ^^

Will and Grace. Karen is just incredible, I love that character. And I never really liked Sex and the City... it's not really funny, I think.

I don't think I stand alone when I say that most if not all American T.V is utter wank, especially the "comedy". American's are way too ignorant and overly concerned with being politically correct to ever produce anything worth taking time out to watch, and I feel I must stress that I include 'friends' in this radical statement. Micheal Moore made a valid point when he stressed that the Bristish have more quality television on the five terrestrial channels which they all recieve then on the hundreds broadcast in the States. Sorry guys but as far as I'm concerned whether you're talking Will and Grace or any other diabolical, predictable load of tripe churned out from that sinking nation it's all scrapping the dregs of the barrel as far as I'm concerned!!

To me it's like asking "Would you like to watch the paint dry, or the grass grow?". Both are equally boring.

*gasp* how dare you.

I think a Desperate Housewives vs. Sex and the City thread would be better. They were both incredibly influential on women.

Seconded.

Thirded, with the additional question: why would you choose TWO SUCH TERRIBLE shows to choose from? They EXEMPLIFY what's so very wrong with American TV!

In both of the shows, the characters are such whiny, overemotional AR$Eholes.

What ever happened to the role of the tough guy on TV or movies who kills the bad guy in amusing ways? The HARD c*nt?
Or what about comedies that are ACTUALLY funny?
NO! NO! THEY all wanna watch "FRIENDS", with that whiny little stuck-up B!TCH ROSS and "his" girlfriend, Rachel.

Friends is a terrible show. If that's the height of quality American comedy you have encountered, then you, my friend, are speaking out of your ass. Might I direct you to:

Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Simpsons
Arrested Development
The Family Guy
Sports Night
Seinfeld

Those are just off the top of my head. The only British comedies that I would put in that league (of those that I've seen) are The Office and Black Adder.

While I like other American shows like Southpark and whatnot, I have to agree with La Diosa - both of these shows suck. Hard. Here's why I think so:

Sex and the City:
Displays women as not only sexually liberated (which is a good thing IMO), but as downright vile and disgusting creatures - at least personality wise. It seems almost as if the whole sales point of the show is to make cheap and despiccable viewers feel better about their deeds, or to encourage fence-sitting women to put out to every single stranger who approaches them, regardless of consequences. Women are displayed as only interested in two things: Money and Sex, and the show reinforces the stereotype of "Bad boys finish first" as emphasized by "Mr Big". While a world like this, where every woman is for sale may be a freshman's wet dream, I hope to god it never comes true (and no, I'm neither religious nor American myself). Just my opinion of course. *dons flame retardant suit*

Will and Grace:
While I don't think this show is as loathsome as SatC, it does bore me. The same thing happens every single episode: A man and a woman start an argument (usually Will and Grace). Man does some soul searching and realizes that *gasp* the woman is right. Then he comes crawling back for forgiveness or simply does as he was told, depending on the severity of the argument. It's like he's a puppet or something. The show is too busy being politically correct to actually make any good points in my opinion.

Thirded, with the additional question: why would you choose TWO SUCH TERRIBLE shows to choose from? They EXEMPLIFY what's so very wrong with American TV!Again, seconded. The best American comedies for me are/were The Simpsons, Frasier, Southpark and Futurama. But I still prefer the old British ones, such as Blackadder, The New Statesman, Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers etc etc. Unfortunately, these days British comedy is dire as well.

You'd compare SEINFELD to British Comedy? Are you KIDDING? That show's TERRIBLE, TOO!
I was only pleased to see Jason Alexander go on to better things ("Duckman").
The Simpsons, of course, is good, and certainly so it Family Guy.

But English comedy's WAY better than most of the things that you listed. "Blackadder" you already mentioned, but look at "The Young Ones", "Bottom",
"Father Ted", "Smith and Jones", "Hale and Pace", "Ben Elton", any of Billy Connolly's stand-up material.
And that's just off the top of my head.

Mainstream American comedy isn't even CLOSE to being up to the standards of the British, with the possible exception of Duckman, The Simpsons or Family Guy (and even THAT has Irish influence! )

Ah yes, records. I would have a ton if I could afford a record player. Sadly that is not the case.

The case is that I've won a bunch of money in a competition, but I can only spend it on clothes and shoes.

So for now, YAY FOR SHOES.

I always thought Duckman was annoying.

Father Ted I don't get at all, but it may be a cultural thing. Come to think of it, that may be why you don't really get Seinfeld. It's a very American brand of humor.

I wonder if they show Curb Your Enthusiasm in Britain. I imagine that translating very well.

????What women are these?

God, the one show makes single women look desperate and pathetic, and the other makes married women look desperate and pathetic. Makes you want to just enter a convent!

No thanks. I prefer shows with strong female characters...not characters who pretend they are strong because they have lots of meaningless sex, or characters who stay at home moping about being married (and occasionally screwing the gardner).

Yeah, Sex and the City was full of women in their 30s who acted like self-absorbed pimply high school kids, and presented this as a vision of female empowerment and independence. When I watched it (because of girlfriends, thank you very much) I always noticed that all of their problems were self inflicted and could be solved by behaving like adults.

Both shows are about a bunch of halfwits who do nothing but whine about problems that are either self inflicted or imaginary. Is this how society really views women and gay people? And since I'm a straight guy why do I care?

Both shows are pretty funny though, once you get past the characters.

and desperate housewives is the same, just teri hatcher dithering about whether to go out with that plumber or not.

Its like theyve watched the simpsons, realized that the main character is a retard and assumed this was the way to make good tv.

If theyd payed attention they would have realized that what makes thge simpsons great is homers funny voice, not his personality. If will and grace talked like that, god that would be great.

Ayway will and grace is better because between the 2 shows karen is the only normal character.

can relate, old girlfriend did the same to me the bitch :p

What REALLY PISSED ME OFF about the show was how every week the main character had something happen to her for the first time. What men cheat? Men do this? Really? ITS AS IF SHE'D LIVED ON ANOTHER PLANET!!!! stupid cow

Neither. Both are well made, well acted, well directed pieces of television, let down by a major failing...

I like SatC better. It isnt filmed in studios only like Will & Grace, which is something that bores me with sit-coms, the characters show slightly more brains and it doesnt go for every cheap laugh. Plus Miranda looks hot. That doesnt make it the greatest show on earth, but it is more than a couple of cheap shots on homosexual stereotypes, Stanford is way more bearable and less clicheed than Will or Jack.
