Either way, I'd say you are half right. You have to lead. That's the only way to get ahead. That means that you have to be innovative, talented, and intuitive. You also need to understand people well, and what makes them tick in order to succeed.
Hard work will get you by, but never ahead if you don't step out from the crowd and do something different. It's risky. That's why only those who've taken the risks deserve the real rewards. They have the balls to be unique.
Society stands on their accomplishments. It doesn't make for an easy life, but I don't believe those exist.
