there is a link on the bbc news website (im afraid i am not sufficiently computer literate to work out how to link to it, someone else may be able too) where you can watch pictures taken by passengers on the air france flight which crashed yesterday. remarkable amateur journalism without doubt, but where these people very brave or very foolish? would you stop to take a picture if you thought your life was in danger?
Whoa, whoa, whoa...! People stop to take pictures when they've got a chance of being killed?
Idiots!

Eh, probably both. Not a big deal either way.

Yes, it's really stupid. And yes, I'd do it.
It's a sign of the times... whenever anything remotely unusual happens, people start pointing their camera phones and gawping.

Knowing where the plane crashed, likely neither. The busiest hiway in the country runs along the edge of the airport, it was a fair distance away. I haven't seen many of these pictures, but they were pretty safe if they didn't hop the fence onto airport grounds

Those pictures were taken by some of the PASSENGERS THEMSELVES, at least acoording to the BBCs commentary during the segment.
Actually, I think the people who took those pictures had incredible presence of of mind to even *think* of taking a picture. Besides, al but one of the photos they showed were taken outside the plane, once the photographers were in relative safety and really couldn't have done anything except run like mad or stand and watch. I wish I could say I would have taken pictures too, but it just wouldn't have occured to me in such an extrodinary set of circumstances.

There was one commuter who drove off the 401, through the fence and then started helping people out of the plane, he then helped search the plane. This according to CHCH News (CanWest Media).
I disagree that the commuters were admirable for stopping, it was stupid and thoughtless. Some of the best pictures were the ones from the traffic camera, as well as most of the good video.

i'm pretty sure if i'd been on the ground watching a plane go down, i'd likely have freaked out... imagine all those people being turned into goo in front of your eyes.
