Starting your own country?

The guy is Danny Wallace, co-conspirator of Dave Gorman. If you've never heard of him, read 'Are YOU Dave Gorman?'. Very very funny. And the TV series was even better. He's also done Dave Gorman's Important Astrological Experiment, and Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure.

Obviously we are all here on NS primarily because we've created our own virtual nations. Annoyingly, however, that's all they're ever going to be - virtual. But some bloke in the UK is now attempting to create a country for real. It seems, to me, to be quite tounge-in-cheek sort of stuff, but could make interesting viewing nonetheless. The series begins its airing on BBC2 tonight at 10pm BST, and you can become a 'citizen' of the country by going to www.citizensrequired.com.

Clearly, this is not to be taken 100% seriously. But let's say someone was completely serious - the only ways I've heard of new countries being developed in the modern world are wars or revolutions. Do you think there are alternatives? What would be the best way to gain your own territory, develop your own government and attract a large number of citizens?

Best places for new nation:

1) Canadian arctic (Honestly, they'll never know you're there. And if they find you, what'll they do? Send in the "army"?)

2) Antarctica (Not quite as good as Canadian Arctic. Too many penguins)

3) Undersea complex

4) Subsurface lunar colony

5) Giant airship

This is the fourth time in the last couple hours I've seen that "time thing" happen.

There are some fairly empty bits of Australia too, if you like it warm. Or the top end of Scandinavia if you like it cold. The problem is, if you are going to set up your own country, what will you do about food, health, education etc.? I'll be interested to see how Mr. Wallace gets on as a non UK-taxpayer (presumably), therefore deprived of the benefits provided by the UK government...

Sussed the time thing. My post says 11:38, but my clock says 12:38. I'm in British Summer Time but my posts are in GMT.

Anyway, I like number 4 on your list - assuming we could get to the moon (which admittedly may be just a little bit difficult without bottomless pits of money and governmental assistance, which kind of defeats the point!), we could just nab bits and pieces of it!

I also like Antartica, though. Mainly because there are so many penguins ;)

One could buy an island somewhere and set up a country? I don't know is that possible?

Yes, we have something like that in Australia, the Hutt River Province, led by their glorious majesties, Prince Leonard and Princess Shirley.

Blimey!! That's really intresting! Although I do think that they should have a decent web designer as one of their citizens ;)

The Principality of Sealand (http://www.sealandgov.com/) is an even better example. It even qualifies under the Montevideo Convention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montevideo_Convention), at least theoretically.

Perhaps it's not so hard to get your own country after all :) When (not if!) I win the lottery, I will buy a small island and run it myself. I sure whatever government presently own it could be persuaded by nice financial offers :p

The Hutt River Republic and Seeland are reserved
on NationStates by former nations.

There is another place called
The Conch Republic consisting of
the Florida Keys or Monroe County Florida,
they have an online store, you can become a citizen,
get an official passport, buy a government position,
etc, etc, etc.

I dont provide a link to it because it is
to commercial and it might violate an NS rule.

You can look it up on the internet and
decide for yourself and maybe if the rules permit
provide a link to it.

It is also reserved on NationStates
by a former nation.
La Habana Cuba.

My signiture that is what it is.
