I saw charlie and the chocolate factory last night. Its fantastic. I absolutely loved it. Having watched Willy Wonka the Chocolate Factory on Sunday morning I wasn't sure if they could beat the original or if Johnny Depp was 'old' enough to play Willy Wonka.

Johnny Depp was outstanding. I don't know if kids would like it, from their perspective its not as colourful as the original. Its quite dark in places, but I was chuckling the whole way thro and there are some brill one liners. In short tumbs up for the new film and the edible Johnny Depp.
(cos that would be cannibalism!!!-joke from film)

I have yet to see this remake. I liked the original, and would go out of my way to watch it if it were on TV. I've wondered if Depp would be able to pull off Wonka in the same way the lovable Gene Wilder did, and it has been a subject of many a debate amongst me and my movie-critic friends.

I've no doubt that Depp could do it well, but I've wondered if he could do the original justice.

But...Hell...I'll try any movie once if it looks worthy of my time.

I watched it on Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it one of the best films I have watched in a long time with real feel good factor. Depp was a fantastic Wonka. Would highly reccomend it to anyone!

D'ya know the two films are soo different, they are seperate films. Deep and Wildman play the character so differently also. It took a bit to get used to Depp given that he is so much more ecentric than wildman was.

Go see it now!

I have enjoyed both the 1st and 2nd films.

The only real thing that disapointed me in the new version was the Ompa Lumpa's no way as good as the first film, and also the music/songs were nto so good!

But still a really good film :)

The first one was okay but it really didn't get me the book did (Roald Dahl's one of my all time favorite authors) and it had that really FREAKY part which I think would scare the heck out of children. Really, movies like Charlie (Gene Wilder version) and The Wizard of Oz (The wicked witch) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (the Child Catcher) can scare the living daylights out of kids!

Seeing the movie this afternoon.
Personally, I think Johnny Depp is a zombie sent back in time to kill little girls. That's just me, though. ;)

I was completely dissapointed in that movie. Well, not dissapointed-Burton dropped the ball in a way that is completely Burton.

For all his chatter and such about this one being darker it really wasn't. I wasn't creeped out at all by this Wonka-he was just a clown.

What the hell happened to Charlie once they entered the factory? The character all but dissapeared. He inherets the chocolate factory because he is not adventurous nor does he have a sense of wonder-as if Wonka was looking for his opposite to run his factory.

Emotionally empty, visually congratulatory ("Candy doesn't have to have a point, it's candy" doesn't work as a defense for your films, Tim-there are plenty of people who make visual feasts but they don't pretend that they are also doing a narrative.)

It's been a long time since I read the book so I don't remember if Slugwort was in it, but his absense in this film was surely felt-no conflict, really, except the relatively easy tacked on one at the end about Charlie not wanting to leave his family-introduced briefly at the begining and then rushed through again at the end.

All and all just a bad film. It's a shame that Big Fish didn't do better because that's something Burton did well. Instead we're doomed to get more Planet of the Apes tragedies...

I enjoyed it but I wish the oompa loompas songs were more like the original ones.

The way Dep plays the role is what makes me like the new version better than the old one. He's a bit darker and more weird. Dep stole the show from the minute he arrives on screen.

.
Snipped original post.

I've got to disagree with you here. Dep's Wonka basically told Veruca's father that she was going to be incinerated, then prevented him from going to her aid. That's a bit darker than Gene Wilder's Wonka.

What the hell happened to Charlie once they entered the factory? The character all but dissapeared. He inherets the chocolate factory because he is not adventurous nor does he have a sense of wonder-as if Wonka was looking for his opposite to run his factory. That's how the book reads.

Emotionally empty, visually congratulatory ("Candy doesn't have to have a point, it's candy" doesn't work as a defense for your films, Tim-there are plenty of people who make visual feasts but they don't pretend that they are also doing a narrative.)

Burton's is much more in keeping with the book. The Wilder film's addition of the Slugworth/steal a gobstopper conflict and Wilder's rant about "Stolen Fizzy Lifting Drinks" (trying to force Charlie into deciding for or against honesty with no prize at stake for chosing honesty) was a morality play not in the book.

All and all just a bad film. It's a shame that Big Fish didn't do better because that's something Burton did well. Instead we're doomed to get more Planet of the Apes tragedies...
Methinks you just don't like Burton. Your call, but IMO he did a good job. I agree that the ending's addition of an additional morality play was not necessary, but mostly because it ruined the chance to do Great Glass Elevator - which is wonderful satire.

You must have been watching a completely different film, as Charlie, while perhaps not yet very adventurous, certainly did have an extremely obvious sense of wonder. This was evident from the very beginning of the movie straight on through to the end.

Meanwhile, I loved the film. It was different enough from the original that I can view them as separate movies (and absolutely adore both), rather than see one as a remake of the other. And how I managed to get through childhood without reading the book is beyond me.... I'll have to correct that soon. =)

The lyrics to the Burton film were the ones Dahl wrote for the story...

I dont care, the oompa loompa songs in the original are way better, and why did they have all the oompa loompas played by one actor, just plain stupid.

Hard to believe this MJ lookin' Wonka just was a pirate two years ago. Love Johnny Depp, loved the movie. His portrayal of WW was some freakish breed between Edward Scissorhands and Michael Jackson.

"The lyrics to the Burton film were the ones Dahl wrote for the story..."

Didn't say anything about the lyrics - it was the songs and the music - how they were done, you could hardly understand them!! And no Ooooomap Luuuumpa do be do do song - I loved that!!

Oh and the biggest disapointment They were not Orange :(

I think I must go read the book again!

"and why did they have all the oompa loompas played by one actor, just plain stupid. "

That's what I thought - in the making of the film that was on ITV the other day they were trying to say there were different actors playing Ompa Lumpas!!

It was still a gurt good film though!

I agree with Wilder's portrayal as being a lot more freaky, he was just plain scary. On the boat ride (the one with chickens being decapitated in the background) he pretty much goes nuts.

Also he had that weird iced over glare in his eyes and his haircut didn't help because when he got dressed up in Wonka's clothes he looked like a deranged serial killer.

When I first watched it at 7 or 8, I was scared of him.

Depp's version of Wonka is a bit softer and looks like he is enjoying himself.

Anyone want Johnny's face on nerds?

The film is what the word fantastic was invented for - i sat open-mouthed and gobsmacked all the way through it. It is so much better than the the first in every way. I also get the impression that this film is more about Wonka than the original and you get more of an insight into his character - love the flashbacks. Also, Violet's mother is just brilliant as well.

I just love Burton's imagination, he is one of the few directors that really stamps his authority on a film and makes it instantly recognisable as a Burton flick from just a few seconds of seeing a bit.

I just wish he'd stop putting Helena Bonham Carter in every film he makes...

p.s. Who's looking forward to the Corpse Bride!?!

...This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my entire life. The first movie taught life lessons.
This was weird for the sake of being weird.

cos that would be cannibalism

...which is frowned upon in most societies...

I saw it today and LOVED every second. Johnny Depp is practically perfect in every role he plays, but in this he really excelled himself.

Did you notice that all the Oompa Loompas were played by the same person?

And I thought the darker bits were brilliant, something that the old version was severely lacking in.

Go Tim Burton: yet another fab film.

Depp said the character was a mesh of different influences, like children's tv show hosts and teachers he'd had.

my only criticism is that the oompa loompas didn't sing the oompa loompa song!

Depp and burton did a much better job at following the book … if any of the two should be banded it is the first one.

And personally the new songs (well old ones that the first movie neglected to include) are better

...This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my entire life. The first movie taught life lessons.

And here I thought that the idea that people need family and should stick by those they love, even in the worst of conditions, was a good life lesson.

Is it not one you agree with?
