Anime?
Okay, I've read through recently and I'd just like to know who on NS considers themselves a fan of Anime, Manga or other forms of Japanese art.
If you are, what series are you currently reading/watching?
I know you guys are out there!

I'm a fan of anime, but I haven't seen all that much, if you understand me. I do enjoy Cowboy Bebop though, I haven't seen the series, but the movie was excellent. I haven't really seen a series, except Outlaw star. I've mainly seen movies, such as Vampire Hunter D, Fist of the North Star, and Akira, as well as more modern ones such as Spirited away.

Yeah, it's the movies where Anime really shines. I've seen the classics, "Ghost in the Shell", "Akira", "Castle in the Sky". Anything by Miyasaki is worth checking out...believe me!

i've been a passive fan for many years, in that i've never really gone out of my way to buy or watch any, but have happily watched quite a lot with my friends, who are anime fans. i've also occasionally borrowed their stuff.
Favourite movie: either the hilarious Dragonhalf, or Laputa (Castle In The Sky) by Hayao Miyazaki - the one anime i went out of my way to buy for myself
Favourite series: Cowboy Bebop is brilliant of course, as is Neon Genesis: Evangelion. Nadesico (spelling?) was great too - Guy Daigoje (spelling?) is the man!!
also seen: Ghost In A Shell, Violence Jack (:D), the Project Ako series, Akira, Megas XLR (love it! thanks TIN!), and a whole bunch of others i can't remember the names of
edit: a note on Castle In The Sky: if possible try and get your hands on the original english dubbed version, rather than the recent Disney re-release, as the voice acting is much better in the original (imho)
plus the music is a shitload better, being the original music from the Japanese version, and not generic Disney mush
I like it, but don't make a point of watching it. Except for yaoi. Heh.
Note: if you don't know what yaoi is, you probably won't want to know what it is. Just take my word for it.
The unfortunate thing about Anime is...it's too damn expensive! Gah!

Not a total fangirl, but I've had an interest in Anime for about 8 years. My favorite film is Ghost In The Shell, I've also seen Akira, Dominion Tank Police, Perfect Blue, Urotsukidoji, Street Fighter (if the mega-fans count that!!) and several others that I can't recall atm!

Not a fan at all. Rehashed plots, character types, and cliches provide very little interest to me. Add to that the style which I am just not fond of, and the "culture" that comes along with the medium in general, I.E. insane fans at conventions. So nope, I am not a fan.
love anime, have for ages
I've seen: Neon Genesis Evangelion (the original series, the directors cut and Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion), Hellsing, Love Hina, Tekkaman Blade, Read or Die, Blood: the Last Vampire, Koi Da Maru, Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, the first pokemon movie.
Currently Watching: Naruto, He is my Master, R.O.D. the TV, Mahou Sensei Negima.
I've read: A.I. Love You, Love Hina, I''s, Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell.
Currently Reading: Naruto, Pretty Face, My Two Wings, Futari Ecchi, He is My Master, Girlfriend of Steel.

As a rule, unless it has actors I can trust (ie Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha or Trigun), I watch my Animes in Japanese with English subtitles.
However, Miyasaki films are generally well voiced if you ask me, I even liked the Disney version.
But, if you want, I think the DVD Versions you can find at Suncoast have multiple language selections. Everything from Japanese with English subtitles, to original translation, to Disney voice-acting.

heh, too lazy for subtitles here... besides i'm a slow reader :(
but yeah there are plenty of language options on the Disney DVD, but i seem to remember being disappointed that the original dub wasn't one of them. i could be wrong, however... i'll go check in a bit

Oh, I don't know. I think a Gundam or a Veritech could give 'ol Prime a run for his money. :D
Top Manga: Vagabond, Kare Kano
Top Anime: .hack//SIGN, serial experiments LAIN, Samurai Champloo
Scanning my dvd collection reveals Akira, Patlabor, Guyver and a couple of other treats scattered about. Final Fantsay: Spirits Within is there too, which although not typical Anime followed similar conventions and explored similar ideas (Gaia theory). I often catch late night anime on cable, and some of it is awesome, but I have never been able to find them to buy (or remember the names tbh). Always wished they would make some serious MechWarrior-based anime, that would truly rock.

If your a big fan of anime you should check to see if there are any Anime conventions in your area.
We have a convention here called Anime Iowa. It runs this year sept 9-11 at the hotel Fort Des Moines. It's a great place to check out new anime & see what you like.
Ghost In The Shell is really good as well as Appleseed, with the graphics, but lacks some story.

Hmmm, anyone seem on Winamp Internet TV, or anywhere else, thats just where I found it, "Love Hina" Its funny, with quite a good story.
Isn't Love Hina practically pornography? I've seen the books and they were filled with big-chested girls that defied gravity with their ability to still walk.
But no. I don't like anime. I can't stand it. I love Alias and I couldn't even watch the Animated Alias for more than half minute periods.
I think it's the girls... and the boys. Fine. It's the stereotypical character with the upturned nose and the huge eyes that make me wonder if they're compound eyes.
I grew up with Sailor Moon and I used to love it, but then I was introduced to cartoons where the characters don't have supernatural powers and weird hair colors and burst into tears that look like rain fall spurting sideways out of eyes (old-school :D), or the gigantic sweat drop and X eyes when they're sick and dead.
There's also this... detatchment. I'm usually fine with things like Bertolt Brecht's alienation and totally surreal things, but with anime, forme it's just unpleasant.
well Im afraid Im one of those evil people who cant stand Japanamation. I think its a generational thing...my teenager loves it. Googly eyes and pointy hair..yuck! and they are almost all drawn the same . To me its not an art form but just the latest schlock thrown together because its popular with youth. I mean you can like it if you want to but nearly all the cartoons are turning into this crap, characters shrink and turn into children when they are mad all sorts of ridiculous things. Even Disney is being ruined!! Disney paints characters that look believable and beautiful. This is only my opinion. So please skip this tirade if it bothers you . Just the other side speaking up.

I like anime all right, but I pretty much only watch what’s on Adult Swim. I originally just watched the American comedies on it, but at some point, started watching the anime as well.
My favorites are Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Full Metal Alchemist, Inuyasha and Samurai Champloo.
Something I’ve been wondering, what the heck does Champloo mean?

Can't blame you for that. While I never saw Samurai Champloo. I considered Paranoia Agent to be the lamest of the lame myself. ;) You might want to give "Scrapped Princess" or "Crest of the Stars" a try though if you like SF. "You're Under Arrest" is a good one if you like cop shows. "Mezzo" is good for those who like noir-flavor PI shows and "Licensed by Royalty" is a good series for anyone who liked 1960s TV spy shows. :)
The manga series I'm currently reading include Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Excel, Aoi Yori Aoshi, and Fruit Baskets.

a fair opinion, to be sure (what am i now, Irish??). thats how i feel about a lot of modern kids cartoons shown on Western mainstream cartoon channels, created for and by westerners. things like dragon ball z (yuk), the pokemon cartoon, etc etc... they all look like each other and feature the same spikey haired character screaming his mouth off over something, usually in an attempt to make the viewer buy some crappy new merchandise. yeah i'm a cynic.
most of the anime i like (and i'm sure most others on this thread like) is not this mainstream, mass produced rubbish, but actual anime from Japan. films directed by the great Hayao Miyazaki are actually good films, with stylised animation that isn't taken "to the eXtreme!" specially for attention-span deprived western kids.
but then you do have super deformed (like dragonhalf) which can be just hilarious :p
Oh, I don't know. I think a Gundam or a Veritech could give 'ol Prime a run for his money. :D
don't forget Megas XLR!! go Coop! :D
I love anime, though I would love breaking the Japanese manga monopoly even more.

Eh, I wouldn't say I like anime and manga in general. I do enjoy some mangas and animes, but it's no different than how I like a few Western shows and comics. Just because something is anime/manga doesn't mean I'm going to like it, and in fact, the majority of it either doesn't interest me, or I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
That aside, manga series' I own/have read:
Saiyuki
Pet Shop of Horror
FAKE
Gravitation
Gamerz Heaven
Qwan
Descendents of Darkness
Naruto
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Diabolo
Demon Diary
And Full Metal Alchemist
I own the movies Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (which just doesn't compare to the graphic novel version), and Spirited Away and have enjoyed the following anime series'/movies:
Naruto
Full Metal Alchemist
Samurai Champloo
Dragonball Z (Aha... silly horrible dub. You were my first)
Yami no Matsuei
Ai no Kusabi
Howl's Moving Castle
Hm... there's probably more, but I haven't been overly fond of many others and just watched them as something that happened to be on that was midly interesting. I know I've seen more, but if I've forgotten it, it's not all that worth mentioning.

It's a series of three/four pannel comic strips, usually with no continuation that pokes fun at the working world in Japan (Think a Japanese version of Dilbert, only focusing more on OLs, Office Ladies, than men). Also covers Japanese life in Japan's big cities, the home, and other points of interest.

I've been into it for longer than I'm sure some of you have been around :)
Currently, I'm working on Kazemakaze Tsukikage Ran, and a whole bunch of others I can't think of the names of right now. Oh, and if anyone hasn't seen Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (Kare Kano)(His and Hers Circumstances) I'd recommend you drop whatever it is you're doing right now (you're reading a forum post, can't be too important :P) and go grab it. Definitely one of the best ever.
Ya I want to check out Kare Kano but I cannot find it

Try DVD Pacific. They've got lots of affordable anime. Otherwise there's always Ebay, but the risk there is never knowing the quality of what you're getting (lots of badly translated bootlegs and whatnot).

The unfortunate thing about Anime is...it's too damn expensive! Gah!
Any reason why, here it's same price as normal DVD's but we are only 8200 or so kms away from Tokyo
Not a fan of Anime, mostly due to Western tastes in Entertainment, and there is something seriously something wrong with those guys that do it.

(Deleted to minimise space required)
and that's only what I can remember right off the bat, and not including my Hentai stuff.
44 posts before Hentai is mentioned, that a surpise, Anime = Animated porn
at least to me.
Incidentally does any one who hates anime like western style and vice-versa?
I don't like Anime, but the old WB and MGM cartoons crack me up.
The newer stuff is more hit and miss.
Good Dexter's Labartaory, Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain,
Allright Samurai Jack, I am Weasel (Weasel = The Star Trek Klingon)
BAD Cow and Chicken, Ed Edd Eddy, Powerpuff Girls,
I honesty want to hostipalise the guy that created Cow and Chicken it shits me that much
LOL I am a huge Gundam junkie:
UC:
Gundam
MSG: 08th MS Team
I tried getting 0080 and 0083 on DVD a few months ago but alas

44 posts before Hentai is mentioned, that a surpise, Anime = Animated pornyou're right, the word Hentai is mentioned in Post 44, but in Post 9:
Not a total fangirl, but I've had an interest in Anime for about 8 years. My favorite film is Ghost In The Shell, I've also seen Akira, Dominion Tank Police, Perfect Blue, Urotsukidoji, Street Fighter (if the mega-fans count that!!) and several others that I can't recall atm!
an actual Hentai Title is mentioned.
