What do you reckon is the best national anthem?
I nominate Brazil, it's got a catchy tune to it.
Also Germany, because I'm biased and because it's got an interesting history that is often misinterpreted.

Probably we all would like our own countries, I know I liked "Ishe Komborera", but it is no longer our anthan, the South Africans have taken it as the first half of their new anthem. Also does the song of the International brigades count. What I can't stand is "Simukai weZimbabwe", racist properganda.

I wasn't. And I really like it... and if you will decide to replace your present anthem with another--what will you select? IMHO Jerusalem is the best replacement, but its words are too... old-fashioned, even more than the present UK anthem.

Jerusalem and finally God Save the Queen.
no no no. honestly, do I have to repeat everything... as i said elsewhere, Jerusalem is a nonsense - every line can be answered with 'nope'.
And did those feet... nope. etc. etc. etc.
Land of hope and glory is better, if only because I always think of it being sung like in It Ain't 'Alf hot Mum... :D
I'd probably go for Three Lions, although Vindaloo is probably more culturally accurate

Or maybe even 'I Predict A Riot'
I mean, who dosen't enjoy going 'la-la-la la-laaaaaaaaaaa'?
I think the Russian Imperial anthem has to get an honourable mention, if only for being the exact same tune as God Save the King/Queen.
I mean, who dosen't enjoy going 'la-la-la la-laaaaaaaaaaa'?
My thoughts precisely. Of course, the Scots would have to bog off with Floower of Scortland, and the welsh can have Cym Rhonda or Land of my Fathers or whatever, and leave us going 'Nah-na-nah, nah-na-nah, nah-na-NAH-NAH-NAH-NAH-NAH. We're Ing-er-lund...'

For the sheer sound of it... the Russian National Anthem - it's still has the same tune as the old Soviet one right? Just hearing it makes me want to shout "Za Rodina!!" with a clenched fist upraised.
For sheer fame... La Marseilles - it's a bit on the bloody side but there's no denying that it is THE song that evokes freedom, most famously on the big screen during the musical duel between it and Die Wacht Am Rhein in Casablanca.
And (okay I'm biased) for musicality and evoking the true spirit of the people I'd go for my own Philippine National Anthem, "Lupang Hinirang" (Honored/Beloved Land). It is divided into three parts - the first is inspired by the Spanish Marcha Real in honor of 300 years of Spanish rule and what we inherited from Espanya Viejo - our sense of honour, our faith in God, our individualism, our romanticism. The second is our own, taken from native music styles evocative of a 'moro-moro' w/c is a sort of adventure drama in musical stage-play form. The final part is taken from La Marseilles, invoking our desire for freedom and independence in the best traditions of the revolution "Liberty, Equality and Brotherhood". Thus the song acknowledges who we were, are and hope to be through choice of musical inspiration and through the lyrics which paint a picture of a homeland we will fight and willingly die for.

Well, of course zee German Nationalhymne :D
Closely followed by the one from the Soviet Union (that one rocks!!!) and the UK/GB one (which was actually used as well - with German lyrics - by the Kaiserreich or German Empire).
The French one is nice as well (but who are those enemies in the East they sing about :eek: )
Although the tune is nice, I can't stand listening to the Italian one anymore - thanks to Michael Schumacher... played waaay too often after F1 races.
Edit: After reading through the posts on the last pages I definitely want to add the European anthem: Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joy). That one touches me every time I hear it (almost more than our own national anthem). Beethoven kicks ass. As for the lyrics - yes, they are about drinking and enjoying life and friendship, human brotherhood and joy. Can't see anything wrong with it... Freude!!!
Why, the national anthem of Taqlid of course.

I agree really - 3 lions or vindaloo would be stupid. The problem is, i'm torn between a National Anthem which actually conveys any sense of grandeur and pride and one which is fun to sing along to. Can we make the words of God Save the Queen fit to 3 lions? or something better anyway. It's just the tune is so bloody dreary.

God Save the Queen is good however we must not forget our secondary anthem which is really Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves. I wish a pox on all those that disagree.
Oh and I may have a little British blood in me so I could be biased.
anywhere i can't find a link so here's the lyrics.
When Britain first at Heav'n's command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain;
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.
The nations not so blest as thee,
Shall in their turns to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.
Still mor majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.
Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame,
All their attempts to bend thee down
Will but arouse thy generous flame;
But work their woe, and thy renown.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.
To thee belongs the rural reign;
They cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles thine.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.
The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coast repair;
Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to juide the fair.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.
God Save The Queen!
The CANADIAN national anthem is the best. Canada has been voted by the United Nations as the best country in the world to live so it follows that we would have the best anthem.

The Amhrán na bhFiann of course, sung by 60,000 from the north of Ireland in croke park is a great sight!!
Soldiers are we,
whose lives are pledged to Ireland
Some have come from a land beyond the wave,
Some to be free,
no more our ancient sireland
Shall shelter the despot or the slave;
tonight we man the Bearna Baoghal
In Erin's cause.
come woe or weal;
'Mid cannon's roar and rifle's peal
We'll chant a soldier's song.
We'll sing a song, a soldier's song
With cheering, rousing chorus
As round our blazing fires we thong,
The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the mornings light
here in the silence of the night
We'll sing a soldier's song
In valley green or towering crag
Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
That's floating o'er us,
We're children of a fighting race
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march the foe to face,
We'll sing a soldier's song
Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
The Long watched day is breaking;
The serried ranks of Innisfail
Shall set the tyrant quaking.
Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silvery glow,
Out yonder waits the saxon foe,
So sing a soldier's song.
A Nation Once Again, the northern Irish Catholics national Anthem:
When boyhood's fire was in my blood
I read of ancient freemen
Of Greece and Rome, who bravely stood
Three hundred men and three men
And then I prayed I yet might see
Our fetters rent in twain
And Ireland long a province, be
A nation once again
Chorus
A nation once again
A nation once again
And Ireland long a province, be
A nation once again
So from the time through wildest woe
That hope has shone a far light
Nor could love brightest summer glow
Outshine that solemn starlight
It seemed to watch above my head
In forum, field and fane
It's angle voice rang round my bed
"A nation once again"
So as I grew from boy to man
I bent me to that bidding-
The spirit of each selfish plan
And cruel passions ridding
For thus, I hoped some day to aid
Oh, can such hope be vain?
When my dear country shall be made
A nation once again

This is the presrnt Russian anthem, too--we changed the words, of course (BTW, the poet who wrote the new words was the same one who penned the original, Stalin-glorifying lyrics in 1943 :)).
The Stalin inspired lyrics of 1943 were not the original lyrics to the hymn though....the original was written not too long after the Revolution, and replaced the internationale which was the new anthem.
Yeltsin changed the anthem to another tune when he was in charge did he not? Putin ordered the Hymn be brought back, with changed lyrics.
The Stalin inspired lyrics of 1943 were not the original lyrics to the hymn though....the original was written not too long after the Revolution, and replaced the internationale which was the new anthem.
The Hymn of the Soviet Union replaced The Internationale as a national anthem in 1944. Its words and music were written in 1943, by Mikhalkov & El Registan and Aleksandrov respectively, and the lyrics with Stalin are original. Between 1956 and 1977 the anthem was purely instrumental, for obvious reasons the words were not sung. In 1977 Mikhalkov submitted 'Stalin-free' lyrics, and we were singing again. :)
Yeltsin changed the anthem to another tune when he was in charge did he not? Putin ordered the Hymn be brought back, with changed lyrics.
That's true. The Patriotic Song was our anthem between 1991 and 2000, and then Mikhalkov was asked to write Version 3.0. :)

Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side;
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so!
But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
And I am dead, as dead I well may be,
Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!
I like to hear that when it is played at the Commonwealth Games although the original lyrics are good too

The Russian one was very good indeed.
As to the ongoing debate over the UK national anthem, I would advocate either 'God Save the Queen' or 'Rule Britannia'. Although I love 'Jerusalem', it has explicit references to England throughout and so we can't really use it as the British national anthem unless we have some of the words rewritten. 'Land of Hope and Glory' has a good chorus but I think the rest of it is too much like a military march.
I don't like the American national anthem very much.

or in English...the Irish National Anthem
For lyrics, the Denmark national anthem is the best:
There is a lovely land
with spreading, shady beeches
Near Baltic's salty strand
Its hills and valleys gently fall,
its ancient name is Denmark,
And it is Freya's hall
There in the ancient days
the armoured Vikings rested
Between their bloody frays
Then they went forth the foe to face,
now found in stone-set barrows,
Their final resting place
This land is still as fair,
the sea is blue around it,
And peace is cherished there
Strong men and noble women still
uphold their country's honour
With faithfulness and skill
- Very medieval-fantasy-style, with myth references, I like it. :)
For music and lyrics, I think La Marseillaise.
I'm Brazilian, BTW. ;)
ah..we had to drop about four i think...shame really...although a true patriot like my self allways includes them..Well, we only had two... the second world war gave the first two verses a certain "spin" to them that could be misinterpreted, although the song is much older than unified Germany.

"I vow to thee my country" is another excellent British patriotic song. It has slightly better lyrics than "Jerusalem".

Here is the full original German Anthem ("Deutschlandlied") with translation.
Music written in 1797, text in 1841.
==================================
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt,
wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
brüderlich zusammenhält.
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
von der Etsch bis an den Belt,
|: Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt! :|
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
sollen in der Welt behalten
ihren alten schönen Klang,
uns zu edler Tat begeistern
unser ganzes Leben lang.
|: Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang! :|
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
sind des Glückes Unterpfand;
|: blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes,
blühe, deutsches Vaterland. :|
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles
Und im Unglück nun erst recht.
Nur im Unglück kann die Liebe
Zeigen ob sie stark und echt.
Und so soll es weiterklingen
Von Geschlechte zu Geschlecht:
|: Deutschland, Deutschland über alles
Und im Unglück nun erst recht. :|
=============================
Germany, Germany above all,
above anything in the world,
when always, for protection,
we stand together as brothers.
From the Meuse to the Neman,
from the Adige to the Belt,
|: Germany, Germany above all,
above anything in the world. :|
German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German songs
shall continue to be held in high
esteem all over the world,
and inspire us to noble deeds
all our lives.
|: German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German songs! :|
Unity and justice and freedom
for the German fatherland;
This let us all pursue,
brotherly with heart and hand.
Unity and justice and freedom
are the pledge of happiness.
|: Flourish in this blessing's glory,
flourish, German fatherland. :|
Germany, Germany above all,
and during disaster more than ever,
only in disaster can love
show whether it's strong and true;
And so shall the song continue
from generation to generation
|: Germany, Germany above all,
and during disaster more than ever.:|
We dropped the first two.

In terms of both music and lyrics, the French, US, and Soviet anthems are my favorites.
