Does anyone else get the shivers when they listen to a song?

Does anyone else get the shivers when they listen to a song? Not just any song, but one with meaning or a great guitar or just a great singer...

Is it just me?

It's one of those strange things that you don't know if other people do..

For me, the song is The General by Dispatch. I love it so much, I get the shivers whenever I listen to it. The meaning is just so.. *sigh*. I love it.

Yes, I get that sometimes, some songs can just give me a big emotional feeling also. Don't play a sad or actionlike song around me.

Does anyone not get the shivers when listening to really, really good music?

I remember when my (very good) choir was rehearsing Mozart's Requiem some years ago, and by the end of the Lacrimosa, at least 10 or 15 of the 80 of us had tears in our eyes....

Most anything suitably epic.

Tetsuo, in the Akira OST
Dies Irae, from Mozarts Requiem

The End of All things from the LOTR: RotK soundtrack:
Flight to the Ford/Knife in the Dark/The Prophecy from the LOTR: FotR soundtrack

Lacrymosa-can't remember the composer but it was on Kronos Quartet's Night Prayers

Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman.

Where Flamingo's Fly arranged by Gil Evans (the original version is cool, kinda, but much more chilling when done on a bass trombone, apparently)

A few others that aren't coming to my head right now.

Blue Room by Chet Baker.

Mmm...all good choices. A different choir I was in performed Shore's LOTR Symphony about a year ago (which was a very cool thing to be a part of - seeing a giant symphonic concert hall full to the brim with people of ALL ages warmed the cockles of my little heart), and every time the orchestra played the Rohan motif I most definitely got the shivers.

ooooooh.... yeah, I was in a concert/choir performance when I was a lot younger. Very good fun, and it crtainly impacted. I have to say.... I more prefer the Ringwraith theme to the Rohan motif, but then I love choral music. Did you perform any of the.... darker music, or was it all the Rohan/fellowship/gondorian themes?

I almost always respond emotionally to music. I'm an emotional person and blah. I'm not big on things that bring me down though. really emotional music tend to annoy me.

However, stuff like Warriors by The Blitz instantly boosts my ego.
A song like Was war gestern los by Verlorne Youngs is almost guaranteed to make me dance, regardless of where I am. At the very least, it'll bring a huge smile to my face.

Gotta love that Oi! Oi! Music :D

I get the shivers when I ever see or listen to anything emotional. Music/movies/television/etc

I reask another question from earlier in the thread:

Yup. The symphony is basically all of the best stuff from the movies, reorganized and slimmed down to about two hours running time. It was an amazingly fun piece to do, since musically it's very good, very varied, uses a lot of crazy instruments (including a stripped-down piano which is hit with a 40-pound chain. I kid you not), and has some killer choral lines. And getting to chat with Howard Shore afterwards was rather neat.

(Plus, as the biggest LOTR nerd in the choir, I was made the "official" language advisor to the group, and was responsible for explaining to everyone how to pronounce Quenya, Sindarin, Adunaic, Rohirric, the Black Speech, and so forth...) :p

The Internationale, the first anthem of the soviet Union and of Socialists in general. it was replaced with the awful Hymn to the Soviet Union. I listened to the English version and had shivers as listening to it.

Thats the one I was really surprised at.

Tetsuo, in the Akira OSTHoly crap, yes!

Hmm... of course, lots of strange things will send a chill down my spine.

The Fugue part of Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor,

Anything that crescendos. :)

Agent Orange by Depeche Mode (I'm weird).

How about books? Any part of your favorite books do this to you? In the (novel) Return of the King, during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, the whole scene where the Rohirrim appear on the battlefield, and most especially the part where the Riders are all chanting 'Death!' in unison... that always makes the hair on my neck stand up. :D

But that's what songs do! If they don't send shivers down your spine, it's the song's fault - if you're in the song's target market.

If the song's good enough, I'll get shivers. If it's *really* good (like the first time I listened to Husker Du's "Celebrated Summer"), I'll get one of those full-body spine chillers.

The original version sung by Roger Walters is much better, some of the instrumets used in this midway through the song as he is singing, leave me in tears.

Orchestrated or classical romantic music has always had a draw for me.

Concerto in E by Mendelssohn
Concerto In A by Grieg
Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg
Sonata Pathetique by Beethoven
1812 Oveture by Tchaikovsky
Light of the Force theme by John Williams
Imperial March by John Williams
Main Theme from Jurrassic Park by John Williams
Scotland theme from Braveheart by James Horner
Hedwig's Theme by John Williams

Plus some silly but true ones:
CBS News theme
Monday Night Football theme
Celebration of Man (played during the U.S. Golf Open)
News Hour Theme

The worst thing about the best news organization in the world (BBC) is that stupid beeping theme that they play during the news.

"Seven Swans" by Sufjan Stevens popped into my head. It is very sparse at the beginning but it builds and builds. The music, combined with a oddly ominous religious theme makes an extremely powerful song. Please download if you get the chance, I would like to hear what others think about it.

Björk's "Hunter," the vocal improvisation between the lines "I thought I could organise freedom, how Scandinavian of me." and "You sussed it out, didn't you?" leaves me breathless.

Her voice is like no other, and the eeriness of the soft "oooh's" in the background with the cellos is just reinforced by the percussion. If you haven't heard this song, you've really missed out. "Joga" is also really good.

Whenever I hear "Pride and Joy" by Stevie Ray Vaughn.
The opening riff especially. I saw it live many times and each time was the same but in different way. The jam just went on and on. Everyone giving it their best. It was indescribable. The energy between them all was great. When SRV and DT played that song they played their best stuff-pulled out all of their tricks.
But the first time I heard it blew me away and got me into the blues scene in Austin at that time. Keep in mind this was the early 80's and the Top 40 was comprised of The Cars and Michael Jackson. The best alternative was Pink Floyd and Clapton (both were great but nothing new had come along). So when I heard SRV&DT, it was mind blowing.
The thing that seals it for me was that I was trying to buy beer at a market and I got in line behind Stevie Ray (I was underage) and there he was in front of me-THE MAN! I had been listening to him before I got out of the car. But it wasn't cool to make a big deal about famous people (I went to school with Willie Nelson's daughter) so I played it off. But Stevie looked back at me and saw that I was very young looking (I'm 37 now and I still get carded-so you can imagine what I looked like then.) and he grabbed my beer from me and I slipped him the dough and he bought the beer for me.

The guitar solo in the middle of 'Mother' by Pink Floyd, both of them in 'Comfortably Numb', the very end of 'In the Flesh?', all of 'One of These Days', anything by Pink Floyd, really; the end of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'; 'Dust in the Wind' by Kansas; and Amazing Grace when played on bagpipes.

As far as shivers and outbursts are concerned I love the Orchestral works of the Romantic Period. Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz and the most powerful composition of the 20th century The Rite of Spring and the Fire Bird Suite by Igor Stravinsky!

Of course System of a Down can do it for me too... :P

The South African anthem, well most anthems actually, always send shivers down my spine, but it's aching all the time. Oooh Mama, life has just began...

I can't stop doing that. Whenever I hear the words shivers and spine it leads me to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

The SA anthem and the Liverpool anthem (You'll Never Walk Alone) are probably on top of my list.

*edit* "Another Girl, Another Planet" - every single time i hear that song, when the opening guitar comes in, a shiver runs up my spine and the hairs on the back of my neck rise. Understand, every single compilation cd i make, it's on. Every single computer playlist i make, it's on. Every single jukebox, i search to see it's on there. I must have heard that song about 10,000 goddamn times by now, at least 500 times a year since my early teens. And every single time, the same effect.

God knows why, i can see musically that it's not a brilliant song, it's quite simple, but it just gets me, right there.

Now, I'm not religious at all, and was raised more or less Jewish, so I really don't understand this, but Amazing Grace gets me every time. That and Salvation is Created (them Russians know how to work a timpani)

Other than that, I don't think there is any one song that does it every time except maybe Tonight Reprise - Smashing Pumpkins. But certain songs will catch me at the right moment and just say everything.
