Do you think Celebrities earn too much?

Well, I was watching Much's Young and Loaded and sees that a celebrity with less education then a College student earns quite a lot more then a doctor. This made me think that today we are overspending on celebrities and sport stars, I mean my father said I should be a lawyer or a doctor, but with today's celebrities making more cash then a college graduate, it just doesnt seem good for people who worked hard. Do you think Entertainment is earning a bit too much.

Supply and demand baby. There's a million doctors but only one Colin Farrel. If you are looking for justice you are looking in the wrong place.

Indeed. Would you want a celebrity to give you heart surgery? I think not. Why should they get paid so much more than the people who actually contribute things we can't live without. Without food, shelter, or healthcare, we would die, but I hardly think Britney Spears music is necessary or beneficial.

They don't protect our streets, our health and our nation. They are just a bunch of arrogant fools in my opinion... and they have said some of the most ridiculous things. They don't deserve to be paid in the amount they do.

I wouldn't say that people working in entertainment in general earn too much. I would say, however, that (as in many industries) the pay difference between the top earners and everyone else is pretty ridiculous. Hollywood A-list actors, pop stars, and famous athletes may be better at what they do than anyone else (which is very doubtful, anyway), but they're simply not millions of dollars better. I do think the arts and entertainment have value in any society, but far too much money is paid for name-value rather than actual artistic or entertainment value.

No one deserves to control as much of the world's wealth or consume as large a share of its resources when there are people who don't have enough food to keep them alive.
Celebrities earn too much. Way too much.

...or Paris Hilton...or Prince Charles...or 50 Cent...or Martha Stewart...or-(rambles on and on for an hour).

I see value in entertainment, I myself have acted in plays, but far too little is being paid to those who really bust their asses.

Yes they earn obscene amounts of money, but I would rather see the actors, whos celebrity status and acting talent (I use that term loosely for some but in a very strict sense for others) that makes the movie marketable, make a good chunk of the money from the movie rather than the label and distributors. I think the writers of the films should make a large portion of the money too.

I think the true blame here lies with the consumers who settle for crap movies over and over again or who even would pay $10 just to see the movie in the theater. True the trailers can often make us want to see a movie and then we find out its crap afterwards but... well I don't know ... just stop supporting crap movies people! lol

The people are the one's who pay for the stuff that gets the celebs millions, sure I don't have a high opinion of them, but I see nothing wrong with people spending their money this way, perhaps something stupid, but nothing wrong.

Celebrities earn too much and don't pay nearly enough in taxes. Take for example Bono. Now, he's better than most because he does his duty by supporting the fight against poverty. But he is tax-exempt because he is an artist, when by rights he should owe the Irish government €50 million.

Well yes they do earn too much.

But look at it this way. Their lives are just entertainment to an entire nation. They have to sell their bodies to photographers and constantly maintain their weight lest they lose all their money. They have to constantly look good for everyone.

So they don't have much of lives anymore. In turn they have a porsche. Meh, the world keeps spinning...

That's really it-

Look, the pay is not coming from an omnipotent 'they' that decides to give celebraties x amount of money and teacher y amount of money. Celebraties generate income through their performance that makes them a lot of money. If Nichole Kidman is worth $40 million in box office reciepts then it makes plenty of sense for her to get $20 million for doing a movie. She's generating that income, not taking it away from firemen. If there was no Nichole Kidman movie you wouldn't be shelling out $10 plus popcorn to go down to the firehouse to watch them do their thing for two hours.

You all wanted a capatilist society, well there it is-celebraties generate a massive amount of income and get payed a massive amount of money. I'm more afraid of the people who can afford to pay them that much, think of the money their making.

Want teachers to make that much you'd have to start selling tickets to science class.

I loved the movie and think that the haters have their heads up their asses. Perhaps they have never encountered omage (much like I can't spell) before. It was a beautiful film and a fantastic love note to a certain period of cinema.

Unless you've had your youthful sense of joy sucked out of you, then you're a hater.

seems to me that from a marxian point of view, the celebrity is a WORKER and that worker is adding greatly to the value of the product s/he is producing and thus actually deserves the huge chunk of the projected profits that s/he is earning.

I think they get paid well because of their box office pull/demand. If they bring in the money they should get paid well. The same with sport celebrities. Admittedly though I wouldn't mind price caps that grow with the economy. A certain percentage of the profits and royalties. That way ticket prices wouldn't have to soar.

So far though we have been willing, as the consumers, to pay the prices asked of us, or at least enough of us have been.

I'm no longer homeless, but I'm not hooked up yet. So I'm still vagabond. I have yet to profit from being paid way to much. Writers never are unless they're names are Verhoven or such...(hmm, that's a little tinge of bitterness in my mouth...)

We're in negotiations. I'm moving to the sticks and she has decided that I don't need 4th gear. I'm going to have to call the Vanagon off the bench until I can afford a transmission rebuild, but in the meantime I can hold it in fourth when needed and I tend to stay off freeways if I can avoid it anyway.

Once that's settled I think I'm liquidating the Vanagon in favor of a motorcycle. I don't need two vans, that doesn't make a lick of sense. And I live on the sweetest strip of road I have ever seen. It's fun in my bus, in something that can actual corner....mmmm drooly.....

But, we seem to have taken this thread to Cuba-probably should return it to it's regular scheduled programing...

Depends on the celebrity really. I believe that the people that belong to a group that are the best at what they do, be it brick laying or acting, that they deserve to be well paid. Regardless of what they have to say or what their opinions are... as someone else has previously suggested on this thread.
