my cat is ill

he's old, about 16 now, and he's having trouble breathing and digesting food. he's been a member of my family since i can remember (since i was about 4) and its so sad to see him deteriorate so fast - especially as he's lost his bowel control in the last couple of days, too :(
we know what needs to be done if he doesn't improve (the vet has given him some injections that might help), but i'm hoping it won't come to that.

so, while you're sparing a thought for our dear Keruvalia, could i ask y'all to spare a smaller, furrier, and distinctly more feline tought for my beloved cat Buster. thanks

Oh, poor kitty... he looks almost exactly like one of mine used to look, his name was Nikolaus.
I hope he'll get better again and have some more happy years. 16 isn't that old for a cat...

ah, he looks just like my kitten Meko. I know what you mean, my dog carlos is getting old now, he's gone deaf and well you know the rest. and the same thing happend to my cat Beni last march, she got knocked down and was too ill to live. She had to get the injection too.
I hope Buster will be ok.

You know, PM, I came to these forums with a similar concern over my ancient (almost 18) little dog, Dolly Doodle. She had lost her appetite and had lost a lot of weight really quick. I took her to our vet, with the belief he would probably recommend putting her to sleep. Instead, he gave her some B vitamin supplements. Since then her appetite has exploded and she's her old frisky self again. With the loss of control, it sounds like your little buddy may have much more serious issues. Trust your vet and spend as much time as you can holding and petting your cat. Love is the best medicine.

I feel sorry for the feline. Being now in a household with 7 of them (on vacation at my grandparents'), and having lived with even more in the past, I've seen the things sicken and die. So pass on my condolences. :(

He's really not his best, he's getting really thin.

Hope your cat is better soon :)

:eek:It looks remarkably similar to a rather large cat sleeping on top of this computer at the moment who just WON'T LEAVE!!! And plus she starts hissing at me whenever I stop patting her head. Meow? :D

Sounds like your cat has had a nice life, one I had once died in my arms from old age, beautiful creature.

I'm sorry to hear about your plight, comrade.

When I was younger, I lost all three of my cats in a six month period. It is certainly a tough situation to get yourself through (it was compounded thrice in my case, however; you have it easier with just one), but you just have to remember that, come their time, their pain will be relieved and they will be free from life, forever to pounce on mice and poop in the big litterbox in the sky. :)

Just keep your head up and make your feline comrade's last days on Earth one filled with constant love. I'm sure that's all they could ask for could they speak.

Oh my... I really hope your kitty gets better. I can understand what you're going through. I'd be absolutely devastated if mine were to fall ill like that. Give him my wishes. *hugs*

Dang, man...
I know what you're going through. I lost two cats in a month. They were sisters, each 19 years old, and had been really skinny and sickly for the last few years of their lives. Apparently, when we took them in to be put down, they just laid their heads down, closed their eyes, and just went like that.

My condolences go out to you. I hope the little guy gets better, he sure is cute...

I hope it goes well for you and your friend. They are more fortunate than we, their life can go peacefully when it's their time. I've lost a lot over the years, it's never easy...

Hi

I have had cats since I was a boy.

If your cat is very sick, take him to a pet doctor. If there is no hope of a recovery, put him to sleep. It´s not a easy choise, but to prolonge the suffering, is a no no! :(

These are the times when I really hate how much longer our life-spans are vs. cats.

However, though you get some pain, all the good and fun times greatly outweigh the bad--that picture is proof.

Hugs and hopes to Buster.

I'm not really a cat person, but I hope the cat recovers and gets a few more years. I still miss my 10 year old Chihihua/Fox Terrier cross mutt.

Make sure he avoids headbutting cars - most pets lose ... but I guess at his age he won't be moving around too much.

lol hell no, he's just enjoying sitting in the sun in the garden at the mo
he hasn't eaten anything in 2 days and nothing we do changes this (hell we've tried giving him best smoked salmon and tuna...) so i don't think he's long for this world now

I remember the day my old cat, Atilla the Hun died(most of our pets get named after historical figures, I have one cat now called Gengis Khan, or Khan for short)

He knew! The look he gave me as I left the house that day, he knew he was going to die, I could see it in his eyes. I came back to find him paralysed on the couch. :( Watched him die I did.

That is a very lovely tuxedo cat. I hope and pray there is improvement. I am a long time cat owner.. so I feel your pain.

What is wrong with Keruvalia?

Edit: I am sorry for your loss ... I have been there and it is not a fun place to be. :( I know this may sound contrived but at least your cat had a loving family.

not really cause you say Polly and Saturate which sounds like polyunsaturate whereas if you put an 'and' in Polly and Saccharide it doesn't sound like polysaccharide anymore

not contrived at all - thats whats keeping me happy, the knowledge that not only did he have the undeniable love of this family, but he lived a damn good life - even by a cat's easy-livin' and pampered standards :P
that picture doesn't do him justice cos he used to be so fat until last year sometime :p

and Keruvalia has had to have an operation on his neck to remove a cancer
but he posted here a couple of days ago. the operation went well and though he can't talk he is recovering, which is good news :)

very true... besides saccharide is a odd name for a cat :p

not that many cats are called Saturate either, mind ;)

I know exactly what you are going through,i had to have my (nearly) 14 year old doberman-cross collie put to sleep about a month ago.
He was totally senile!
He had chewed the fridge, washing machine, central heating, etc. etc. etc.

He had the smiliest smile any dog could ever have had. :(
I miss him terribly.
I have a beautiful tortoishell tabby too.
I am cherishing her!
Well,spoiling her to be exact!

My sympathies go with you!

At least on the good side, you'll save hundreds a year in food, medicine, and jingly things, while being able to wear a stylish fur hand warmer this fall! Also cat is an excellent source of protein...
