BILL MAHER SUES ‘VANITY FAIR’ FOR LIBEL (http://datelinehollywood.com/archives/2005/07/25/bill-maher-sues-vanity-fair-for-libel/)
Magazine says Maher brought six hookers to party, comedian claims it was eight

London – Following Roman Polanski’s successful libel lawsuit against Vanity Fair for an alleged sexual encounter he had in 1969 following the death of his wife Sharon Tate, comedian Bill Maher has filed a similar suit against the magazine. Maher’s lawsuit alleges that an article about a 1995 Hollywood party was “egregiously false” in its claim that he brought six escorts whom he paid $500 each to accompany him. In fact, the suit asserts, Maher brought eight prostitutes and paid them each $750.

The Vanity Fair article, published three months ago, was about the career of comedian Jeff Foxworthy, who has become one of television’s biggest stars with “Blue Collar Comedy.” In an anecdote about Foxworthy’s early days in Hollywood, the article describes a party Foxworthy attended in 1995 with other comedians at which Maher showed up with six prostitutes who, the magazine reported, were each paid $500.

“These claims are maliciously false and extremely detrimental to my client’s reputation,” said Maher’s attorney Jake Frankel. “Basic reporting such as calling any high-class whorehouse in Hollywood would have revealed that Mr. Maher never attends parties with fewer than eight paid escorts and hasn’t spent less than $500 for a girl since 1992, save for a spell in 2002 between ‘Politically Incorrect’ and ‘Real Time’ when he was short on cash.”

Maher’s lawsuit also disputes Vanity Fair’s claim that the prostitutes were all “leggy blondes.”

“Mr. Maher is a longtime proponent of diversity and multiculturalism and is offended at the accusation that he would be so exclusionary,” Frankel explained. “His credit card records will prove that amongst the women whose services my client paid for were two Nubian chicks as black as the night, an oriental schoolgirl, and a short redhead with huge tits.”

Graydon Carter, editor of Vanity Fair, said that testimony from sources used in the article will show that Maher had two prostitutes he hired that night fellate him in his car on the way to the party and then sent them home, thus explaining why he showed up with only six. He added that sources will also testify that Maher earlier that day paid Ann Coulter $1000 to give him a handjob after a taping of “Politically Incorrect,” which is why he was short on cash and could only afford to pay the escorts $500 each. Carter declined to explain the magazine’s sourcing for the “leggy blondes” claim but said there may have been “minor and insignificant” errors.

Like Polanski, Maher filed his lawsuit in the United Kingdom, where Vanity Fair is also published and libel laws shift the burden of proof to the defendant, in this case the magazine, instead of the plaintiff.

His suit asks for $250,000 in damages or one year worth of unlimited services from Mrs. Patterson’s School for Naughty Girls with Huge Knockers.
