It's his thumb, apparantly. He did it after hearing that CAFTA might fail a floor vote in the house.

It blows me away how this administration gets away with this crap. I thought Bush's goal was to restore honor to the office of the President. Who was the last sitting President to tell citizens of the USA to F*#K Off?

Any words of justification from the Religious Right yet?

Truthfully, if Bush was just Joe Citizen ( and for the sake of America i wish he was) i wouldn't care, I'd probably think it was funny. However, it shows such disrespect for the office he holds, and since his office is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces it angers me. There are citizens of America in harms way at this very moment, and this clown of a president gives the finger? To the press? Aren't the press American citizens whom these soldiers are dying to protect??

It's just so disrespectful on so many levels!

I'm a bit hesitant, if only because that's a *very* long finger... either Laura's the happiest woman in the world, or it's seems a doctored image. ;)

I don't know... When you stick up your middle finger usually your pointer finger come up partially as well... about one knuckle. Try to just stick up your middle finger... you will see what I mean. So Jay Leno may have not doctored it but someone else may have. It is possible though it was a thumb... though I would have to say a long one. LOL I thought it looked more like his pointing finger. The hand is tilted forwards, the effect being that the hand is foreshortened and the thumb appears elongated.

Press pause on your player and examine it frame by frame, you can even make out the shaded outline of the thumb.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/m00nbeast/the_bush_finger.jpgactually if you look carefully, the "thumb" that you're looking at can be the knuckles of his index and middle finger. the shape of the hand also indicates a forward slant when doing a "thumbs up" sign.

however, I'm more inclined to believe that is his index finger. the old "we're number 1" sign.

Does this surprise you, coming from a man who once referred to a reporter as "a major-league asshole" on mike??

Remember? Adam Clymer of the New York Times was referred to, on live mike, by Bush, as "a major league asshole." Bush was not aware he was on live mike at the time, and was making what he thought was a private comment to Dick Cheney.

The cameras sometimes DO show the true person. And if he flipped off the press, it comes as no surprise to me, considering that he referred to a member of the press once as "a major-league asshole."

the actual quote was "...and there's Adam Clymer, major-league asshole from the New York Times."

Here's my take on what I see in the enlargement:

www.planetquake.com/elf/thumb.jpg

I see a shaded thumb.

If it's a middle finger, it's too far to the left to be physically possible.

If it's an index finger, how on earth do you hold up your hand at an angle that requires your thumb to be visable to the left of your index finger and have it not be there.

Maybe it's his pinky.

NP, I love shoving the Bushies' faces in what they want to forget. They are so good at shoving our faces in stuff that they have taken out of context...well, we can shove their face in stuff they did, and WE don't even have to twist it out of context, first.

That image is doctored. If President Bush really gave the press the finger, the otehrs around him would have reacted a hell of a lot differently.

Besides, he has a right to express his opinion, as well.

Also, if any news station had recorded that, they would have censored it. They would HAVE to censor it.

It's his thumb. You can tell from the shadow on the finger, which continues down past the "knuckle" area and follows only that finger. You can also tell from the two "bumps" on the left, which are actually his pointer and middle closed, typical for the thumbs up.

While Bush may be crazy to some, I don't think he'd be crazy enough to completely ruin what likability he has left, knowing that the cameras are on him.

It's pretty clear that it's a thumb on the way down. In the first 12 frames of the 19th second, you can see the hand come down and turn slightly to the side, where it's very obvious that it's a thumb.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v354/eagon/bushfinger1.jpg
This is when his hand starts to go down, and yes, it does look like a middle finger. His fingers are facing forward and we're seeing the left side of his right wrist, which is in line with the thumb sticking up, which probably contributes to it looking so long. (Try giving yourselves a thumbs-up and looking at it from the side, then from the back so the thumbnail faces you. Thanks to the part of the right side of your right palm that touches the thumb, it will look slightly longer. Add some grainy, far-away video shots and you've got a flipped bird.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v354/eagon/bushfinger2.jpg
In this shot his hand is about 1/3 of the way down. You're looking at the back of his palm and his thumb is still sticking out. I've scribbled on the image with my crayons to highlight it. The thumb is now at an angle to the floor while the back of the hand is facing us. This manuver would be very unlikely if he was sticking his middle finger up, since he would have to rotate his hand to get it to stick out at that angle. Go ahead and try it with your own middle finger. Your upper arm will start to ache if you do it right. Also, your elbow will stick out further with the narrower angle required to maintain that position.

What irks me is that Bush is somehow viewed as Captain Moral by all the suckers who voted for him, when he's pulled several stunts like this. (Also I can think of a few thousand dead Iraqis and executed Texans who might contest this as well.)
Also it's not particularly moral to support legislation which well end up losing thousands of jobs for the American people. But hey, what do I know about morals?
