Nostalgia Thread of the [Early] 90s

Prompted by another thread talking about old Nickelodeon shows, I've decided to make a thread devoted to the overall TV "culture" of the [early and mid] 1990s. While I hope this will lead to an overall "big list" of TV shows (as well as other stuff that might come up), I also know there is a possibility that it might lead to one word posts, which could be construed as spamming; fear not, I won't allow that (noone jacks Saipea's threads!).

Considering this, I had thought that perhaps this would be excessive in any event -- that perhaps on the internet there was already a big list of 90s TV shows that people could scan amidst their intermittent squeals of nostalgic glee. Apparently, not much was to be found, and those that were turned out to be more genre/channel specific.

So here we go, a thread that will hopefully start a [good] new trend about remembering the era you grew up in via its cultural (and not political) aspects. I'd like to see some 80s stuff as well, because we 90s folk all know that that was the era of pure media "culture."

True to form, I have a poll (though this time its contents aren't the sole focus of the thread.)
Interestingly enough, POGs came out of Great Depression Hawaii by using caps of a fruit juice whose contents were Passion fruit, Orange and Guava. It was revived in 1991 by a school teacher, and eventually came to mainland America in 1993. -> http://www.milkcapmania.co.uk/

Ahh...early 1990's....

I was somewhere between 0 and 5...ahh yes...the culture...the culture of shitting wherever and whenever you felt like and not giving a flying fuck.

Those were the days...where are those glorious days?

Ahh...early 1990's....

Good point, the mid 90s also had culture as well. I guess it was around 1997 or so that things started to go sharply downhill.

I was born around that time myself. The 90s rocked because during most of them I was too young to realize how much live sucked. And I was young enough to enjoy the stupid bubblegum pop groups, Gigapets, Beanie Babies, Furbies, Pokemon, Rugrats, and all that crap when they were popular. Those were the good ol' days.

I ended up destorying mine by throwing it out my bedroom window and into a window well of the neighbor's house... Bastard...

Fucking Gigapets and Pokemon rocked my world.

Not furbies. I knew they were evil from day one.

And I mean, they are bloody ugly!

Oh, and that reminds me.. While we were packing the (mostly still packed) basement stuff and throwing stuff away for moving, I found my old Gigapet! I had that stupid Sabrina one that was supposed to be Salem... Amazingly, it still turns on, but I forgot just how the hell the things worked...

Tamagotchi > Gigapets.

I had a Tamagotchi when I was in elementary school. I think the longest I went with one was 21 days.

wow, I sure miss the early-mid 90's. Born 1988, the perfect time to be born in order to enjoy the 90's. The days when I was still too young to understand how fucked up everything is in the world... The days when the SNES and the Sega Genesis were the top of the line gaming systems... My god I'm feeling nostalgic! Oh yeah, can't forget Pokemon! Heck, I still enjoy the games. I could care less about the show, but the games, man, the games! :P I miss those days...

I put the word "Furby" on my Christmas list and ended up with... 3... count 'em... 3 evil devil worshipping furry robotic bilingual pests. At first I liked them. Then I wished I had a driver's liscense so I could run over the damn things, back up, and do it again.

Whatever. Same diff. I think mine was a Tamgotchi, too. It was a dog. Damn, those things were demanding, weren't they? Like I have time to feed a digital pet every damn day!

(My first died after like, three days, the next lasted four months, and then I purposely drowned it in the bathtub because I was so fucking sick of the whole damn thing!)

Most of what I remember involves my ex-wife's obsession with Madonna, and my step-son's obsession with Sega Genesis. The New Orleans Saints didn't completely suck and the rest of is is pretty much a blur. :D

Yeah, I'm a 1990-born myself.
Dang, I had to have had about... at least a hundred Beanie Babies. Furbies, been there, done that. Still have it somewhere. I think it's in a crate underneath a hundred pounds of crap.
Giga Pet/Tamagotchi, got one, a dog, and left it (I think.)
Pokemon... Dang, I have to have gotten at least 600 cards, a crapload of toys, and every game up through Silver and Gold. Except for Snap for the N64.
And the greatest evil on the planet: Boy Bands. I DESPISED them, and I still do. :headbang: Stupid N' Sync.
But some good things did come out of the decade, like... Hold on...
I got nothin'.

I have a big green tube filled with pogs. It even smells like the early 90's.

Pardon my ignorance, but I can't remember pogs. I have a vague... nope, no I don't.

Oh, yea, I was born in 1989 btw

Anyway, pokemon, yea. Man that game was good. Back in my elementry school days, I was a "dork" or "geek" (right now, I'm a jock. Funny how things change in high school). But then Pokemon came around, I was one of the best, if not the best, in the school, and I was instantly Mr. Popular. Unfortunatly, I moved not long after the end of PKmon craze and started all over again as a dork.

Meh. Pogs were lame. I preferred yo-yos, but again refused to spend money on them. (The only pogs i got were in packets of crisps.)

Boy Bands: UUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrghh...... :headbang:

The BBC still showing repeats of the original series of Star Trek! :D

Hah. Pogs.

I got in on the ground floor with pogs, 10 cents for a dozen at the Qwik-Mart in Pomona in 1993, when I was 9.. I was out there for the summer and brought back a handful to Chicago. I got to be the first one in the area messing with them.

But then the moneymaking potential became clear, and the massive stainless steel ones (5 dollars!) hit the streets and ruined all the linoleum floors at my grade school... then came the ban. That spelt the end of pogs.

Kudos to anyone who can remember what the "throwing" pog was called. And kudos to anyone else who got a Pogmaker for Christmas (and used it).

MY early 90's kind of sucked, but there were some great things about it.

The name "pogs" brought all of these deep-rooted memories out of the corners of my brain. I loved the Power Rangers (the original show, before they made them space ninjas or whatever). I hated the pokemon TV show, but I liked the games.

And most importantly, I loved my Sega. I still consider Sonic 2 the best game of all time. Thanks to Emulators and Roms, I can still play the game. It's just as fun as it ever was.

POGS? 90's? got news for you... pogs were around long before the 90's I played with em during the 70's... and even then they were old.

They were called 'Milk Covers' for that's what they were. The covers of Milk Bottles. I remember rubber cementing 2 or 3 together as your marker and trading em with friends. Now most of the dairies around here are out of business so they're really rare.

BTW... a little Trivia. POG's is actually a name of a drink. Passon fruit, Orange, Guava.

the reason they were called Pogs was that was the cover mostly used. The dairy here in Hawaii (Maui to be exact) that makes the drink sells the milk cover by the tubes (think wrapping paper tube filled with em)

I had pogs, but kind of lost interest. I remember the death blow to them was the release of the Pokemon TCG in 1998. I played it for a while before moving on to MTG, but remember my incredible luck: First pack, a Charizard!

Back in the days of the Pokemon bubble, that thing went for $300-350! Now it's $20-30...I feel like a dot-com investor. :(

Sonic 2 was incredible, but I still felt Sonic 3 (with the Sonic & Knuckles expansion!) was better, The Casino Row level in S2 was my favorite, followed by Robotropolis.

It's kind of funny, cause this thread was never meant to be structured around pogs. I had originally set out to make a list of 1990s shows that kids and preteens watched growing up, but I suppose it's ok as it would have been to long of a list anyways.

Anyways, the least you could do is conclude each post with some shows that you watched or remember, just for the sake of nostalgia. Preferably weird or unusual shows that aren't shown/talked about anymore.

Biker Mice from Mars, Beetleborgs, VR Troopers, Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, Street Sharks ("they're jawsome!")

Ahh, man...the good old 90's...yeah, I was definetely too young to realize that the world pretty much sucked.

I played the shit out of pokemon. I don't care what anyone says, the game (the original one) is still damn fun.

I loved power rangers. The original power rangers. I think I liked the green ranger the best...and secretly had a crush on the pink ranger (Where are you, Kimberly?)

Damn. Gone are the days of no homework, pokemon, and presidential sex scandals.
