When do we stop equalizing?

I would like to make clear that I have NO problem with equality before the law. Beyond that, people should be able to both rise AND fall based on their own work and merit.

However, I utterly despise they who say I am, or I should be equal to all my fellow man. Face it people, there is a natural inequality between humans, in our varying degrees of skill/strength/knowledge. All because there are people who excel beyond me in certain fields does not make me feel inadequate.

Not to mention that equality before each other is nothing short of oppression. The fact of the matter is that in order to make everyone equal, it means oppressing the people on top so that they are no better than those below them.

No one wants you to be exactly the same as everyone else. You are arguing against a desire that does not exist. No sane human thinks that everyone should be exactly like everyone else in terms of physical and mental abilities.

Equal opportunities, equitable (fair) treatment. That is all. Return to your regular program now.

Oh, but clearly that's not fair. Then all the people with no talent who simply inherited their positions would be screwed. Bloody commie you!

Unlike the spoiled trust fund brats who you never hear about she's actually earning some money. She's got a TV show and she does a metric crapload of commercials for products ranging from cell phones to cheeseburgers.

No. People are all equal. They are not identical and nobody is claiming that to be the case.

This thread is ridiculous. Nobody says everyone is completely equal in every way. They just say you should treat other people as your equals. This whole thing is a ridiculous straw man and whoever came up with this business needs a girlfriend.

And why did she get chosen for those roles? Because she's FILTHY RICH, STUPID, and dresses provocatively. WHY? Why must you be filthy rich in order to be casted for shows and commercials?

You don't need to be filthy rich to get advertizing and TV work. Most actors don't start out rich. They start out doing theater and little commercials to pay the bills.

Paris Hilton has got exactly what the viewing public wants. No controversial ideas and no shame. She's just trading on those assets, and the fact that she's slim and not unattractive.

At least the German commercial makes fun of her (I wonder if she knows...:p)

EDIT: And I respect most actors for getting where they did.

I believe it was Kurt Vonnegut, author of the short story “Harrison Bergerson”.
The only place I can find evidence of anybody trying to make everyone absolutely equal is in the American public school system, and even then, only the students.

Besides Harrison Bergeron, some of the other dystopic novels such as 1984 and Brave New World depict a society in which large groups of people are forced into equality, but everyone is never truly equal. There alwayse has to be a ruling class or group to ensure that absolute equality is enforced, and thus they are unequal because they have the power to create equality.

Agreed, Super. Trying to "equalize" the human race is like trying to force all apples in an orchard to be of the same size and quality. Without extreme genetic manipulation, it isn't going to happen. Just realize that there is a tremendous amount of envy coming from unambitious, untalented losers who resent anyone with gifts or drive they'll never, ever posess.

To them, there's only two types of people in the world: Victims and victimizers.
As if this were the middle ages and there were only an upper and lower class.
Nobody here is from a country that isn't (by world standards) "rich". Just because they don't have millions or trust funds, they consider themselves opressed. Oh, poor babies!
Basically, they're just as spoiled as the Hiltons they're singling out. Jesus, they have fucking computers and internet connections and the way I hear it, it's like an online version of Les Mis.
Lots of them are pretty cool once you get to know them, but I'll still tell them to their faces to get over it. Life is hard. Competition (and evolution) are painful processes. Nothing's going to change that.

In a socialist or communist system, they'd be bitching about the inevitable Nomenklaturas anyways (with good reason, though.) :p

Who cares? We've been watching the slow death of the welfare state around the world for the past 15 years. It was a passing fad in the last century that died with it. Those ideas aren't going anywhere. Fin.

She could have much wider hips and because she is of the upper class, she is a mortal enemy of all socialists, but she certainly doesn't look like a 10 year old boy. She just looks ultrathin.

No. People are all equal. They are not identical and nobody is claiming that to be the case.

People are not equal.

If you give two people $100, one of them might make a million dollars out of it, while the other might waste it.

If you give people financial freedom, some will rise and some will fall... because we aren't equally gifted, we don't all take the same risks, we don't all want the same things to the same degree.

As for Paris Hilton, she's okay imo, but not beautiful -- she has a square face.
