I'll never understand mass-vehicle crashes.

There was a 20 vehicle crash in Connecticut today. Apparently, a dump truck that may have lost it's brakes collided with a commuter bus. A chain reaction of crashes followed.

Now, what I have to ask myself is... How in the hell do you NOT NOTICE that?!? If you're following so closely at such a high speed where you can't avoid that kind of monstrous wreck, then something is VERY wrong! Apparently, 18 other vehicles couldn't. I really want to slap the hell of of #20 who apparently failed to notice a 19 vehicle wreck in progress! *sighs*

This is why, regardles of how fast I drive(and I drive pretty fast), I always give at least 2-3 seconds space between me and the guy in front of me. I simply don't have much faith in my fellow drivers. Hell, I don't trust any of them! I've seen the kind of people who can pass their test.

Personally, when it comes to operating multi-ton conglomerations of steel and glass in public, in any weather, day or night, around large numbers of people, we're a wee bit too lax in our standards. But then again, maybe I'm the crazy one. :p

Once your past the 5th car in a pile-up your license needs to be revoked for incompetent driving

I ride the bus to my college, and almost every single day, I see people trying to cut it off, and nearly getting into wrecks. People take absolutely unneccessary risks to get to some place that very likely is not worth their life. I know a guy who would drive around on average 20 to 30 above the posted speed limit, and I realized that my life was worth more than getting somewhere quicker, and hanging out with someone who endangered my life every time I got into the car.

i didnt read about the event but if its rush hour in ct there probably isnt 2 seconds between the dump truck and the #20 car. there might be.....4 lanes of traffic, 5 deep, bumper to bumper, going...60 mph. the bus and the truck could have easily blocked 4 lanes of traffic. one mistake and bunches of cars are affected.

is it really ever possible to put a reasonable distance between you and the car in front of you during rush hour? if you allow that much space, someone fills it.

That's too bad that's why in England some of the motorways have flexible speed limits, so when a motor way becomes clogged the limit can go down to 30mph in all lanes. This does several things first it slows people down, and the second it stops people swerving all over the place, which in many cases causes accidents and more congestion.

As for safe driving just treat every other driver like a moron and you should be okay. :)

And with 40 clowns in each car, they act as one big cushion for eachother. :)

Wouldn't the mortality rate spike radically, though?

Doesn't seem like much of a solution to me. Unless you friggin hate clowns

A smarter person might of realized cars go faster then human reaction times, safe distances in major cities at rush hour is not possible, you make a gap people will fill it.

And as the accident is going on you got more then a dozen people making individual decisions on what to do, chances are a couple of these will end up crossing paths without touching the main accident. THAT is the reason for pile ups, not the accident itself, but the reaction of everybody behind it.
