A Canadian kid has decided to use Canterbury Tales as fodder for his rap music. I heard some of his rap on the BBC news hour this morning. It made me ashamed to be white. The beats sucked, the kid had no flow, it was so bad I was embarrased to listen to it.

Anyway, here's a link from the CBC

You've probably never heard of 'J-Roc' from Trailer Park Boys, then. He takes cultural misappropriation to new heights. Check it out, try finding some TPB torrents for some good chuckles.

The West Indies has provided Canada with a rich variety of excellent musicians, rappers among them. You should pay a visit to the T dot some time to check them out...or at the very least, download some tunes by the artists I've mentioned. MUCH LOVE TO THE WEST INDIES!!!!! :D

No really, we have some damn good rappers and hip hop artists. So hush you bloody USian you!

The song victim is off the judgement night soundtrack the whole album was a metal/rap thing really cool. Eric Schroedy aka Everlast aka Whitey Ford has a much respected solo career, DJ Lethal is with Limp Bizkit.

Well what does work well in French is that fusion of Arab and French pop, called "Rai" music. Very listenable, exotic yet not altogether unfamiliar, although I haven't a clue what the songs are about (like the one that absolutely, cannot be named "The Good Fish Deli" - but uncannily, the Arab lyrics sound exactly as though that is the refrain.

Good fun. But not rap. I used to listen to Bhangra, which is rap-ish... and also fun, in an east-Indian way.

Im assuming that if the Cantebury guy was seen on BBC you are in England and are therefore in no position to be pigeon-holing Canadians as not cool... Of all rap I have ever heard English does it the worst. The English language in comparison to all languages is by far the lamest and in terms of rap it simply just cannot flow. In order for rap to sound good a higher vowel concentration is needed, (remember it was invented in Africa), which is why the best languages for rap are French, Spanish, Italian and Arabic. Hmmm...I wonder what Inuktitut rap would sound like... But I doubt the British could let go of thier ethnocentrist outlook on music for long enough to find out. Cheers

Depends on the kind of rap. 'Gangsta Rap' you can expect coming out of Halifax. Some funk-inspired rap is easily found in Vancouver. I live in Montreal and while I see a lot of French rap, it isn't really popular ... except for maybe on 96.9. Toronto is pretty various but doesn't produce most of the country's best.

EDIT: Actually T-dot did produce Kardinal Offishall who is internationally known.

Everlast had a solo career before House of Pain. "Forever Everlasting" came out in 1990, he was one of the Rhyme Syndicate's (Ice-T et al) little discoveries. They put together House of Pain to get him into the mainstream. I was not impressed with it.
