Arghh!

I had a hangnail, so I pulled it out with some tweezers and ripped up the cuticle. Now it stings like a motherF8cker, and is bleeding all over the place.

I invite other NS'ers to share their "home surgery" stories.

I was about 10, getting dressed after taking a shower, since I was going to my friends house to play video games all night. I run into my room and slip on a sock, my upper lip wrapped around my top row of teeth. My head hits the edge of the bed and one of the front teeth pierces the lip - my response?

"It's okay, I can still go over." As my mother hands me a wet towel which quickly fills with blood.

Another time I fellt ten feet from my treehouse and bit through my fucking tongue. We wrapped it in a wet rag too.

WET RAGS FOR EVERYONE!

And no stiches!

Some advise for future hangnails...

Use nail clippers. Just cut the hangnail so it doesn't snag on anything.

I haven't done much in the way of home surgery. I cut hangnails and fix ingrown hairs. That's about it.

It feels good now. I'd never had a hangnail before. The amount of blood was a little shocking however.

I will keep your advice in mind for the next time though. Thanks.

having bled myself over the years enough to fill at least a small koy pond I am sure, I am no longer surprised at the amount of blood the human body can output without collapsing from lack of blood.

When I was about 12 I got my tongue stuck to the freezer door (it was a really hot day & a very stupid way to cool down). I didn't know what to do, panicked & pulled my tounge off the freezer. It removed the top layer of my tongue, tore the sinew that attached my tongue to the bottom of my mouth & bled copiously. A very painful lesson to learn, but I haven't done it again. :)

I've only ever broken my nails three times, but whenever it happened it was either internally or very close to that. One of those, I smashed my hand in the door of my hotel room. It broke my middle finger's nail internally and dented my ring fingernail. I had to use a needle to dislodge the nail from my skin and create a canal for the rotting blood to flow out of. Hurt so bad the first night that I couldn't sleep.

I've bitten my nails for years, and now I have an ugly, gnarled index finger nail. Permanently, according to my doctor.

Word to the wise, use clippers.

Word to the wise, use clippers.I've been doing it for years too, but they aren't gnarled... have you just been biting them? I only bite them when they get too long.

Depending on the geometry of the nail in question I like to use either an x-acto blade, small sharp utility scissors or a nail clipper. It hurts like hell if you fix a bad one yourself, especially pushing the puss and accumulated blood out. After that rising it, and disinfecting it really isn't that bad. Digging out a deep planters wart is a pretty miserable experience too. But it's definately better to bite the bullet and get it over with early if that's what it's coming to. Letting it get out of hand to the point of surgery, which I've see two people do, doesn't look like any fun.

Probably the worst cut I've ever done to myself was after I just sharpened my lawnmower blade for the first time. It was like a katana. I was tightening the blade back on and my hand slipped. That was a pretty decent cut. Much worse than that and I'd go to the hospital.

I was about ten and I had been at an uncle's house learning some archery skills and he had given me a bow and a quiver of arrows that when I got home I had placed(thrown) on the floor of my room, very stupid. Later that night I ran into my room without turning on the light to get something in the corner and had somehow stepped on one of the loose arrows that subsequently (somehow?) became erect when I was bending over to pick up whatever it was I went in there for. It peirced my bottom lip and stuck into the roof of my mouth. I did'nt panic because for some reason it did not hurt. I did'nt want to pull it out until my mom had seen my latest accomplishment. She almost fainted, then she saw that I was'nt going to die and that I was slightly amused with my predicament so then she was alright. I then decided to go into the bathroom and pull it out. It came out of my palate ok with a bit of bleeding but my lip was the problem. Whenever I pulled my lip tried to turn inside out. I had to use baby oil to slide the shaft of the arrow out of my lip completely.
We went to the emergency room and had to wait for four hours because of all of the gunshot victoms and whatnot. Thats when my lip started to throb badly. I had been drinking a soda through a straw while we were waiting so I had the bright idea of inserting the straw through my lip and drinking the cold soda to quell some of the pain and it worked. After four hours or so they stitched me up and now I barely have a scar. :D

Hangin' from my cuticle
A hangnail
All: hangnail

I cut out ingrown toenails on each of my big toes with a very sharp swiss army knife.

I pulled a broken and infected wisdom tooth with a pair of needle nosed pliers. I had to first modify the pliers in a vise with a torch to put the correct angle on it.

they sell little dental kits with a special disinfectant and a temporary patch material for that. You dont want any infection settling under the tooth-trust me.

Mines nowhere near as painful as anyone elses, just pretty stupid.

I was sticking some stuff together with superglue, and got some on the pad of my thumb. Remembering that water would only make it worse, and that it was practically dry already, I decided to take it off with nail clippers. After five minutes of cutting, I realised that:

A. This is taking a long time
B. It hurts

Inspecting it, I realised that all of the glue had come off some time ago, and for the last few minutes I had been slicing bits off my skin.

I don't think I've ever had a full-blown hangnail, but one time my big toe-nail was definately starting to dig in. Fortunately I managed to use the nail-cleaner attachment on a nail-clipper (also known as a blade) to dig it out. Wasn't that painful as I recall. This was around 13 or so.

And then ther was the time I got a big wart on my big toe. I believe it came about after I stepped on a rotten peach after my toe had been sliced open by a barnacle at the beach a few days earlier (I was 10 at the time). After staring morbidly at this wart for a few days, I got some kind of sharp object and began picking at it. After about a week of picking, scratching, and even chewing (I was quite flexible in my younger years) I eventually got the stupid thing off.

my brother shaved his fingernail off with a death-trap pencil sharpener by accident

i have tried to fix loose teeth by twisting them, only to get stuck and use a small pair of scissors to remove the nerve ending holding it in place
