Ok, because Eutrusca gave me the idea, I'm starting a "Worst Boss Ever" thread. Rant, rave, and share your stories about horibble/stupid/confusing/whatever things your boss(es) have done/said to you or to other people. Enjoy!

Heres mine, I copied it from the thread where Eutrusca gave me the idea for this thread:

My worst boss

1) Misrepresented the job I was being hired for. Rather than managing a liquor store, I was basically a stockboy. The boss (owner) micromanaged everything. I was told I'd be making decisions on what items to order, have responsibility for maintaining inventory, and be in a position to schedule other worker's hours. I got none of that.

2) Never paid for overtime hours which I always worked.

3) Kept the radio in the store tuned to a top-40 pop station all day long. When you hear "I beleive I can fly" some 7 or 8 times a day every day you want to test the theory by jumping from a tall building.

She wasn't all that bad, but bad enough to make me quit and risk unemployment rather than stay there.

My story is much more humorous. I work for a telecommunications CO. Our CEO who has been paid millions of dollars & given a private jet to lead our company into bankruptcy twice now decided to have the entire leadership team dress in costume & hand out candy to all employees on the floor. So she is going around in a witches costume handing out candy to a row of employees when the vice president of sales tells her that he already gave candy to thet row.
Now when I say candy I'm talking about a one cent tootsie roll. Not like a whole 75 cent milky way bar or something a 1 cent tootsie roll.

She proceeds to go down the row & take the candy back from everyone she gave an "extra" piece to.

Then a week later she laid off 25% of the people in my department.
I'd hate to see the layoff figures for if she hadn't taken those tootsie rolls back.

I hate people in "management" who can't seem to manage to keep the company afloat without laying people off. I wonder if management could manage to hold down a real job and make ends meet? I wish more of them would get fired so we could find out.

That certainly seems to be the case. I'd just love to see them working at KFC or fixing septic tanks though. That would be cool.

A friend of mine was a parter with like a psychotic lady. She had started the practice so I guess she was the boss. Well, one day with out notice, she comes in and fire's my friend's secretary, billing lady, etc. They both spent a TON of money fighting over a computer system.... They ended up paying more for the lawyers than the computer system was worth. And my friend ended up loosing. She's happy now though because she's the boss.

I worked in a doctor's office, and I quit because, in addition to making my life hell in a variety of creative ways, she accused me of stealing her tweezers. Not even something sharp, like scissors, or something interesting, like a clamp. Tweezers.

Um, yeah. What the hell am I going to do with a pair or doctor's tweezers?

An AVP I worked for was sleeping with her boss, the VP. She was a dimwit, and everyone knew it. At least when you did a project, you got full credit for it, because everyone knew she was incapable of much of anything.

But in addition to being a dolt, she had a total lack of professional communication skills. When I advised her of my pregnancy, she told me “That’s too bad, you’re a really good employee. You don’t impress me as the mothering type.” It was all I could do to not reply “Well, you don’t impress me as the managerial type, either, but see where getting laid got us?

At my first place of employment, I was doing surveys over the phone. It was a shit job, but I was good; always over my quota, on time, whatever.
My fourth or fifth pay check comes, and even though I worked about 90 hours for the two weeks that the check is forway less than it shold be; less than it usually is. No problem, I think, I'll bring it up with my supervisor... I do, and instead of being helpful or sympathetic like I expected, she was defensive, then offensive. She outright accused me of lying, and trying to steal. She informed me that "if [the company] paid everyone the money they said they had been shorted, we'd be out of business". The company is not viable. Got it.
Bitch.

Nice thread! :D

I have so many that it's difficult to choose, but I would have to say that the absolute worst boss I ever had was the owner of a medium size mirror manufacturing company in Thomasville, NC. He hired me as Personnel Manager because of my educaton and extensive experience in personnel. Turns out he loved to hire relatively high-powered people but didn't allow them to act as professionals with any degree of independence at all. I figured out that he wanted a personnel manager primarily to take the fall if ( and when! ) any of several federal agencies decided to take action against him because of the idiotic way he managed his company.

He discriminated against minorities ( we had a major argument about this! ), he paid women doing the same work far less than he paid men, he consistently violated the Fair Labor Standards law, the Worker's Compensation law, the Equal Employment laws, and more others than I care to mention here!

But the worst thing he did was to use highly volitile chemicals in the manufacturing process without informing his employees of the hazards involved, without providing adequate safety measures, without any of the legally required exterior chemical warning signs used so firefighters would know what to expect, and on and on. He was using lead-based chemicals and having people working around them without any sort of protection at all! You could almost see the employees' mental processes slow down! :(

I taught myself how to decipher the various chemicals involved in the manufacturing process, how to write material data sheets, etc., and proceded to post the legally mandated Material Safety Data Sheets ( MSDS ), exterior warning notices, chemical container lables, and other mandated information all over the plant. I also contracted with a local firm to provide all the legally mandated safety equipment for employees.

Instead of appreciating the fact that I was saving him from virtually inevitable lawsuits ( not to mention saving his employees from death, disease and injury! ), he went ballistic. He told me to take down all the MSDS and to cancel the contract for the safety equipment.

I told him, in a very nice way of course, to go fuck himself; that I wasn't going to go to jail with him when the feds came to take him away.

He fired me. I gladly left.

how would you like to sue the company for so much that he's out on the street and you own the company? Send me a message--I'm an attorney and I'd be glad to go over your case and tell you what it would be worth. Based on what you said, it sounds like it would be alot.

I had a seriously incompetent boss in the Summer Camp I usually work at.
The management consists of the Camp Director and the Program Director. Basically, the CD was responsible for running the camp, while the PD was responsible for the program. Somehow, the CD always managed to find ways to piss our PD off. Withholding information and trying to get the staff to go against our PD (who was incredibly popular).

At one time, I talked to the CD because I'd managed to convince my little sister to work for a short while. He said it was ok and that he'd take care of things. The day my sister was supposed to come, she didn't because she and my mom hadn't received the contract yet. I went to ask the PD about this and he was surprised to hear the CD had hired another staffer! :headbang:

At some meetings, the CD, who was rather fat, had his fly unzipped and didn't notice. This was in part because of his massive belly but also because no one had the courage to tell him. So he'd walk around the room with his fly open during the whole meeting... and his massive body only made things worse - it forced the fly to be pulled wide open.
