I've already told my sons what I want for my funeral:

* A full military funeral with honor guard, rifle squad, pallbearers in dress uniform, buglers, flag-drapped coffin. etc. ( By God, I earned it, and if I have anything to say about the matter, I'll damned well have it! )

* For music, although I was tempted to go with something really upbeat and happy, it probably wouldn't fit well with a military funeral. I've decided on "I Will Always Love You" ( mostly a final message to my family ), "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and for the actual interment, a single bagpiper playing "Amazing Grace;" not because of any religious reasons, it's just a very haunting and melancholy sound when played on the pipes. I also asked my youngest daughter ( the first biological child I ever had ... so far as I know! ) to pick some music that she thinks would be appropriate. ( I like participation ) :)

* I had to insist to my sons that everyone get together after the graveside services to have a big dinner and some drinks. I want them to tell each other funny stories about my life and some of the things we did when they were growing up. I even wrote a toast I want them to offer: "Here's to Dad and Poppa, a kind and loving father, and one hell of an old fart!" :D

The Tenecious D with the line
"What we ganna do with all the cash?/Smoke hash!/And then we thrash!/Throw a big ol' bash y'all/And everybody is invited to the bash/And everyone you're all invited to the bash"

Not really a funeral song, but one of my favorite parts from any song.

To Another Abyss - Bad Religion

Curse of a Fallen Soul - Dropkick Murphy

Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye (Just because of Remember the Titans)

The entire score of Phantom of the Opera

Forvere, Upstarts and Broken Hearts - both Dropkick Murphy (these songs have meaning for me and my girlfriend, I'd especially like her to hear "Forever" at my funeral)

I don't know, I'll probably think of some other stuff latter. This is a very odd funeral I'm gearing up for....

The Wall is the most overrated album ever, except for Nirvana's Nevermind. Listen to Meddle or Animals instead.

Meddle, yes, though a little too commercial for my tastes. Animals, very good Roger Waters album, not much of a group effort on that one...

I recommend 'Ummagumma' both live and studio discs, esp. the version of 'Celestial Voices' ending 'Saucerful of Secrets'.

In descending order of preference (Ummagumma being first and foremost in my mind):

Dark Side of the Moon
Saucerful of Secrets
Soundtrack to the film, 'More'
Wish You Were Here
Obscured By Cloud
The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Animals
Atom Heart Mother
Meddle

And, waaaaay down at the bottom of the list, in no particular order:

A Momentary Lapse of Reason
The Division Bell
The Final Cut
The Wall

Best bootleg:

The Coming Of Kohoutek (Winter Tour '72, IIRC)

Absolute roobish. The Libertines are the worst kind of half arsed nonsense foisted upon us by the IPC conspiracy at NME towers. They sound like a crack addict singing along to "Ogdens Nut Gone Flake" through a heavily padded wall.

I knew that my ex girlfriend had lost her previously razor sharp taste when she started raving about them. We lay in bed listening to them, and i recognised every single note, every vocal styling, as done before, better, by far more talented individuals.

And Doherty is an ugly gimp, to boot.

"eyes closed from birth" by southern sludgecore maniacs Kylesa to represent the beginning of life

"blood and thunder" by f*****g Mastodon to represent the middle of life

and "change" (in the house of flies) by the goddamn deftones who need to release a new album to represent its tragic and gruesome close at the hands of martian assassins (or so im guessing, it will be the future after all)

Well im with Tavernham High here The Libertines are one of the greatest band of the noughties. The bit about them being half arsed is nonsense, its good fun music with a twangy edge (especially on Up The Bracket), though I never got why the released there best song only as a single.

Any on to what Id have at my funeral:

I would start it with:

Don't Look Back Into The Sun - The Libertines

In the middle of the service I would have:

Down In The Tube Station At Midnight - The Jam

Followed by:

Town Called Malice - The Jam

Finnishing with:

Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix

TISM - Professor Derrida Deconstructs

I know that the Romans came after the Greeks;
I went to a lecture to hear Robert Hughes speak -
I am honoured, cultured, literate - and yet
All of my life I've had one main regret.

I wish I'd slept with more girls;
I wish I'd had more sex;
I wish my wife had'a sucked my dick.

They told me the yobbos would turn out no good -
I did my homework, they turned into hoods -
I have a family. I am happy and proud.
I said no to anything I wasn't allowed.

I wish I'd done more drugs;
I wish I'd snorted coke;
I wish I had taken the risk.

The Angel of Death hovers overhead.
My family, come, gather 'round the bed;
Come my colleagues, come literate friends.
Here is my last wish, as my life ends.

I wish you'd written my books;
I wish you'd married my wife;
I wish you owned my home;

I wish my thoughts were yours;
I wish my life weren't mine;
I wish you'd never known me at all;

I wish you'd take my place;
I wish it were you lying here;
I wish you'd all get fucked.
