Antarctica.....claim it or leave it....

Jey

even though there is a treaty prohibiting claiming Antarctic lands, many nations have placed claims on Antarctica. Britain, Argentina, and Chile have all placed claims overriding claims on the peninsula below of South America. Bottom line: should Antartica be claimed and made a territory for a country/countries?

It should be left as a habitat for the creatures who live there, and a small portion as an International Science Area.

You need a "in the future, maybe" answer
I would say that right now we do not have clean enough technology to keep the enviroment safe and that we need to invest in cleaner fuels and use cleaner technology, until then leave it for the penguins... :D

of course not. the antarctic treaty system is a sort of first attempt at creating an administrative system that avoids some of the obvious faults of the current world system. why would we want to screw that up and go back to the same old crap?

most of the ice that breaks off currently (like that chunk the size of new jersey or whatever a couple years back) was already floating on the ocean, and therefore can't raise ocean levels. but we are already seeing increased melt from land-based glaciers, such as the greenland ice sheet. and those are the ones that will flood coastal cities.

Whos we? Are you out there messuring the ice or are you being told that by a scientist that wants his funding raised while he sits out there freezing his bowling balls off.

For every glacier with increased melt, i can show you one that is growing....

and whos to say that any of the warming today and glacial retreat is nothing more then the earth recovering from the mini ice age that occured in the 1700's?

"Studies of glacier history throughout the world have shown that, following glacier recession at the end of the last glacial age, mountain glaciers expanded in size during the last three millennia, many reaching their greatest postglacial size during the last 700 years. This recent interval of glacier growth, widely referred to as the Little Ice Age, culminated in major glacier expansions during the early to middle 17th century and the early to middle 19th century"

so...maybe they are just in their retreating cycle?

Heh. You have no idea what you're talking about. Global Warming is an observed scientific fact for which we have overwhleming evidence.

You seem to expect water levels to rise overnight, but that's not what people predict at all. No major cities are underwater, and the theory doesn't predict that yet either. So in this case theory and observation line up quite nicely.

The only question about global warming is to what extent it's the result of natural cycles and to what extent it's the result of our own actions. Now, most scientists believe that humans are responsible for a lot of the current global warming. Long before humans existed there were cycles of warming and cooling comparable to the one we're going through now, and it's not 100% clear that this isn't another of those.

However, the majority of scientists I've met believe polution is a significant cause of global warming. The majority of people I've heard disagree are politicians or people whose opinions on the matter come from politicians rather than scientists. i suppose it's an open question as to which group knows best :D

Anyway, sorry for the digression from the thread, but it annoys me to see these unsupported claims about global warming - I'll be quiet now :p

we as in the collective scientific community and those who base their beliefs on the scientific method and its findings.

so in place of the scientific method and peer-reviewed journals, what do you recommend? and do you realize how big this conspiracy you've invented would have to be? i mean, if they were all just making it up, think of all the grant money to be gotten by the scientist that demonstrated so. this conspiracy has to be big enough to prevent anyone from even attempting to publish contradictory data. it has to be big enough that they can plant fake ice cores and atmospheric composition readings all over the fucking world. it has to be so big that nearly every scientist in a relevant fields knows the secret handshake.

For every glacier with increased melt, i can show you one that is growing....

and whos to say that any of the warming today and glacial retreat is nothing more then the earth recovering from the mini ice age that occured in the 1700's?

no, you can't. and not only because it isn't true.

and i am, along with the ipcc. but perhaps you'd care to quote from peer-reviewed scientific articles that support your claims.

Why do people want the Antartica? there are no riches in it.

That region must remain a science location to discover or study things, because i don't know if the antartica has any resources of great value in it, if there were those resources, it would probably be part of some country.

Penguins are found in the Southern Hemesphere only, and Polar Bears are strictly Arctic, which is in the Northern Hemisphere.
