Nuclear Waste in my backyard?

During the last Australian election, our local Country Liberal Party (CLP)candidates assured the people of the Northern Territory (NT) there would be no nuclear waste dumps if they got elected. Anyway one MP and Senator got back (as well as one Labour MP and Senator). The CLP are affliliated with the national Liberal Party which have more in common with the US Republicans.

Guess what? The NT is now going be the place where low to intermediate nuclear waste will be shipped for storage, at one of three sites. All three are rather close to known populations (one near Katherine and the other two near Alice Springs). So the NT will be storing Australian Commonwealth nuclear waste.

And then it turns out, one of the chosen sites is linked to the water supply from the local rivers

The NT can't do much to stop this unlike South Australia which is a state who blocked a move to put one there earlier.

Any worse? The NT could be storing used fuel rods from Lucas Heights too.

Look on the bright side. If you ever feel like getting into the dazzling, high-paced world of international terrorist market nuclear materials trade, then you know exactly where to get your shit from.

Are you certain there is nothing you can do?

Dig it up and smear it on the house of parliament. They'll change their minds in a hurry.

Not much. John Howard and his mates have control of Australian Parliament and senate now, and the NT is a Territory (and not a State) so they do what they feel like.

There is something you can do if it is really a problem:

MOVE

That's a choice, but ironically the NT is probably the only place in Australia which won't be suffering water shortages due to global warming (a few more Cyclones though).

Dont worry. The containers wont start to leak material into the ground water for a few hundred years, and you'll be dead by then anyway.

I don't trust our Federal government to do anything right except talk crap and tell lies. We don't even know what kind of facility they'll be using yet.

They arent going to deliberately kill voters simply to save money. Not voters who are alive during their own careers anyway...

They picked the NT because it's the "least" populated with lots of desert.
It's also the least spoilt part of Australia but I guess a few extra tons of radioactive material is going to change all that.

Our health system is kind of falling apart because of earlier funding cuts to the health system, so they are killing voters so save some money.

Nah they'll bury it underground and it doesnt take up much space. You dont have to worry for 1,000+ years. That's when the containers decompose to the extent that dangerous levels of radiation can leak out.

Let's hope there's no cost cutting involved ...
