No.

I'd be a dick, but what's the point?

Here's your answer:

Being "gothic", in the most general sense, is meant to be a lifestyle, although nowadays it is more of a fashion sense.

The real "goth" existed in the 80's and listened to the Velvet Underground - nowadays, you have it ranging from the Hot Topic High School Goth Kiddies to the graduated College "The Cure" Loving Goths. Both have equally strange make-up, and both sop it up with bad poetry. I mean this with utmost respect, mind you, seeing as I've been around the Gothic Circuit more than once around here - but overall, it isn't my personal bag of tea.

Listening to heavy metal just makes you a heavy metal fan. It also depends on what sort of metal you like. If you tell me you listen to Korn and call it heavy metal, I'd have to drop into your home at night and slip a few Pantera and The Haunted albums in there. That is heavy metal. Half the metal shit you hear playing on the radio is generally a style of Nu-Metal. Not inherently terrible on its own accord, but just not actual Heavy Metal.

Question answered as honestly and politely as possible as I could manage.

Yes. I listened to way too much metal and I turned into a Germanic warrior and then sacked Rome.

I don't listen to heavy metal, but I do listen to music that's considered gothic. It does not, however, make me a goth. I just like the music; I have no desire to dress in a goth-like way.

As someone else said, being goth has become fashion, not the statement of what it used to be. As such, I just can't bring myself to dress as a goth, much as I fit the mold for it. Listening to a certain type of music does not make you goth...at all. And it pisses me off that people think it does.

No thread can be made about the modern subculture without mentioning the Germanic warriors... or vice versa. It's a rule... or something.
