Ok, folks I'm going to New York City to visit my daughter who has a new job and starts law school in mid August. I want to know what I should go and visit. Tell me about the places that tourists don't usually go. I love jazz and know about the usual places; tell of the out of the way clubs. What is the best place to eat for regular folks? Gotta hurray I leave, with my wife and middle daughter on Wed am.

Thanks, what kind of music? My older daughter is pretty aware of the music scene. Her friend works for Sony music.

Well, the CBGB started as a country and bluegrass club, but that plan (its NY, who even likes country there?) went belly up, and it became a rock club. After the Ramones started playing there for their first shows, it became pretty much all punk. I think it still pretty much is. I hear the lease expires soon, so go while you have the chance...

I'll check it out. Thanks again.

Hate to tell you, CBGB's has been condemned. They are trying to get it land mark status, but I haven't heard anything more on it.

Terra Firma is a cool palce. Small, dark, smokey with live music. Usually blues, jazz, a little old school rock. Its next NYU and Washington Square Park, which is lined with small bars, other music joints and comedy clubs (Comedy Cellar tends to get some big acts). The Park itself is cool for a good time.

You gotta try Papaya hot dogs. There are tons of them around the City under different names (Grey's Papaya. Papaya King, Grand Papaya etc etc). 1.75 gets you 2 dogs with the works and a drink. Awesome after a late night on the town.

Thanks for the info on Terra Firma. I have heard about Papaya hot dogs and will give it a try.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

So the hot dogs aren't made from papaya, that's just a name? Because a papaya sausage would be too cool.

They all have all natural papaya juice.

I also know a few card rooms if you are into poker, but they are all membership clubs. Thats like $5.

Upright Citizens Brigade theater specializes in improv and sketch comedy.

West 4 Street and 6 Ave is home to the best streetball in the world. And not just that And 1 video crap. Real basketball.

Central Park, Bryant Park and Washington Square Park usually have some form of free entertainment going on.

Mmm...I miss Grey's Papaya. Good stuff.

Oh, and if anyone's into the delightfully tacky, the Stardust Cafe is rather a fun place to have dinner. :p

I think the CBGB definitely needs landmark status... After all, it was the first club to have punk music.

DON'T got to the Empire state building... two hour lines, and the top is a crowded gift shop.

Do go to a great Italian place called Remi's, a cuban place called Vincint's, and the UN, if you can swing it.

There are also some interesting looking jazz clubs uptown near where I used to live, along Broadway near 106th street-area. I don't know too much about the downtown sides as I spent a lot of my time around Lincoln Center anyway, where not too much jazz goes on (darn those concert programmers!!!!).

That reminds me, there is a place in Harlem called the Cotton Club. No, its not that Cotton Club, they just took the name. The real one closed down decades ago. The new one sucks and you don't want to be anywhere near it.

For good Thai food, try Topaz between 7th and Ave. of the Americas on 55th or 56th.

For REALLY tacky but fun, try Jekyll and Hyde's Adventurers Club, also on Ave of the Americas. Order burgers and enjoy being part of the show. (Don't order anything fancy off the menu -- you'll be disappointed.)
