Blackadder, without a doubt, no competition. The casting is among the best I have seen, and it portrays the appropriate age really well and truly, costume and all.

For comedy, The Office, which is realer than any reality TV ever and the most utterly hilarious thing I've ever seen (runners up: The Simpsons, which would be #1 if they hadn't hung around long enough to get terrible, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm)

For Drama, Homicide, a show that was just too good for TV. (runners up: the Sopranos, The Prisoner, The Shield, Deadwood)

"Im Namen des Gesetzes" (In the name of the law). It's the German version of Law and Order, but it has its own unique format that I find appealing somehow.

Family Guy, at least for the writing. It's consistantly hilarious.

Agreed. Best. Cartoon. EVAR.

The Daily show is biased and overrated. But still occasionally funny.

Carlos Mencia's new show is hilarious.

So is FOX news. Even the funny part. The difference? Jon Stewart doesn't take himself so seriously...and he intends to be funny. The same can't be said for FOX news.

Of course, I forgot the whole "brainwashing the U.S." part of FOX. How stupid of me

I always thought "Rescue Me" was a great show.

I also think that in terms of cartoons...hmmm...

Simpsons has been around so long that its pretty much grandfathered in as one of the best.

Family guy is good for quick laughs. If you ask me its really just a more mature Simpsons.

South Park always makes me laugh.

Jon Stewart is Hilarious.

COPS!!! Come on people! You get to see prostitutes get tackled!

Discussion: Faith Under Fire, hands down.

Comedy: Frazier, Faulty Towers, I Dream Of Jeannie and Becker.
Drama: Everwood.
Crime/Action: 24
Sci-Fi: Stargate
Western: Wild Wild West.
War: Garrison's Guerrillas.
Fantasy: Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
Adventure: Young Blades.
News: BBC.
Politics: Meet The Press.
Christian: International Intelligence Briefing and Jack Van Impe Reports.
Mystery/Conspiracy: The X Files.

I do not watch reality nor horror shows, so I have no comment on those 2 categories.

Sorry if I missed any categories.

My current favorite is LOST. Really good character-centric writing, with lots of cliffhangers, mysteries, etc. It's a show you had to watch from the very beginning to appreciate, but it's the best thing on TV right now IMHO.

The best television writing of all time was probably the Twilight Zone. Socially insightful and genre defining. That was good TV.

Seinfeld
D'oh! Forgot that one. Also, I'd add in All in the Family.

What (in your opinion of course) is the best made/written television show of all time?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

They're well written in that it contains references to pop culture as well as highbrow literature, it's funny, and everything in it is a metaphor for things that people deal with in real life like drug abuse and sexual orientation issues.

They were well acted.

They had interesting characters.

They could be appreciated on many different levels.

Reno 911, Daily Show, MASH, Deadwood, Sopranos, and Mythbusters are also great shows.

"I Love Lucy" is on every single day on one channel or another, and has endured that way for about 50 years. 'Nuff said.

Family Guy and The Daily Show are great contemporary shows, but they're so referential to pop culture that the reruns will appear dated and confusing. They wouldn't be able to capture a new audience as generations pass.
