Actually I've been quite impressed at how few flame wars I've seen. Even arguments here seem to involve people presenting their case rather than just abusing each other.

It's true and if we engage in name-calling, it's not even in person. Aren't we just bending over backwards a little too far in our efforts not to hurt someone's feelings? I just don't picture the recipient of a "you suck" insult turning off the computer, curling up in a corner, and crying over it.
