I think many Americans get stuck and stumped when it comes to socialism. They can't seem to get by the USSR concept and Marxism. Modern day Socialism is a loose political ideology, that in many issues can be more conservative than traditional right wing parties. I'm not a big fan of Socialism, but I don't consider it be some sort of evil to be avoided and never mentioned. Communism and Trotskyism are radical and innadequate ideals that should be avoided, however, certainlly Socialism can be integrated in a modern day multiple party system. If Americans and particularly Republicans consider and treat today's Socialism the same way they would Communism, it just goes to show their narrow minded opinion on what Democracy is all about.

Thats a strange statement considering that the US government is a capitalist / socialist hybrid .

Well more or less. The abortion that was Communism is slightly less appealing than it's afterbirth of Socialism. Capitalist Americans generally recognize this. Socialist Americans get all upset when people call them Socialists and call themselfves liberals or progressives. So the main difference between American and say European Socialists is that the American Soaialists are too embarressed to admit that they are what they are.

The dificulties of life are what makes it worth while. We don't have a right to an easy life, we have to earn it through hard work and dedication. If we just sat around all day and did whatever we wanted, life would deteriorate to the point of non value. It is the constant struggle that creates a sense of fulfilment.I must remember that sarcasm does not come across well in a text-based medium. I had thought the little 'roll-eyes' smiley would be enough. I should have used a </sarcasm> tag to be sure.

Sorry.

So, are you in favor of completely unfettered Capitalism? No labor laws. No safety regulations. No unions.

When an american is being called a socialist, said american is being called a socialist with the "evil/radical" connotations that are attached to Marxism, Comunism, Trotskyism. That is why it is offensive. That is what I was talking about in my last post.

Wrong. When an american calls an american a socialist it is because they believe them to be a socialist. When an american calls an american a marxist he either believes he is a marxist, or wants to tarnish is image or ideas. Americans know the difference.

Americans know the difference.I have seen no evidence of that in anyone's comments, that in fact the mainstream of politicaly aware Americans understand the subtle but yet significant difference between one and the other.

Then why was everyone calling Kerry a socialist when he wasn't even remotely close to being one?

and you can say this with a straight face? shit man, americans can't even correctly identify the positions of their own parties, let alone distinctions among ideologies outside of the extremely narrow american 'mainstream'.
