Canada wins dumbest government at World Stupidity Awards (http://news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20050723/ca_pr_on_en/laughs_stupidity_awards)

MONTREAL (CP) - The Canadian government secured a surprise win Friday, beating out such luminaries as Iran, North Korea and the United States, for the dumbest government of the year at the World Stupidity Awards.

It also bested the United Nations in a hotly contested category that organizers said proved Canadians can compete with the rest of the world.

"Canadians often feel we're in the shadow of the U.S., especially when it comes to stupidity, but now we're proving we're world class," said Robert Spence, spokesman of the awards handed out during he Just for Laughs comedy festival.

"And as host country, who could ask for more?"

The Gomery inquiry into the sponsorship scandal secured the award for Canada, said Spence.

Dubbed the "Oscars of Idiocy," host Lewis Black of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart led a team of comics and celebrities who handed out awards recognizing achievement in ignorance and stupidity.

"I was dumbfounded," Spence said in a statement. "To see so much stupidity in one room, I almost lost my mind. In fact, I did..."

U.S. President George W. Bush may not have led the dumbest government, but he was honoured with the award for the Stupidest Statement of the Year after telling a news conference: "They never stop thinking of ways of harming America, and neither do we."

Accepting the award for Bush was Darth Vader.

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton won in two categories. She was named Stupidist Woman of the Year and was star of The Simple Life, which was named Stupidest Show of the Year.

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter won the award as Stupidest Man of the Year. She beat out Bush, U.S. Senator John Kerry, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Players Association director Bob Goodenow, and former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma.

Other winners included:

-Ashlee Simpson's lip-synching performance on Saturday Night Live for Dumbest Moment of the Year;

-Alien vs. Predator for Stupidest Movie of the Year;

-Crystal meth for Stupidest Trend of the Year;

-North Korean dictator Kim Jong for Stupidity Award for Reckless Endangerment of the Planet;

-Fox News for Media Outlet Which Has Best Furthered Ignorance;

-The World Stupidity Awards for Stupidest Award Show of the Year.

The World Stupidity Awards were decided by worldwide Internet voters.

The third annual awards were overseen by the Academy Recognizing Stupidity Everywhere (ARSE), which are "basically a bunch of morons," said Spence.

Ok. I get irritated whenever I see that. The statement wasn’t stupid. He was saying that the US security agencies are always coming up with new ways that the US could be attacked, to ensure that we aren’t. Nice touch with Vader, though. For the record, Bush is a corporatist political hoar, but he is far from stupid.

But he does say some stupid stuff.

Come on, "they never stop thinking about ways to harm out country and our people, and neither do we". Yeah it's not what he meant, but it was damn funny.

I didn’t find it funny when I heard it. However, I tend to be in a serious frame of mind when listening to politicians.

If anything, I am defending our security services. Here’s the thing though, I wish Bush was stupid. However, he has shown that he isn’t, and is very crafty when it comes to pushing his corporatist authoritarian agenda, much to the misfortune of the American citizenry.

It's nice to see Canada come in first though. We just don't get the lack of credit we sometimes deserve..lol :p

Far from stupid. His IQ is 92, that's stupid. That's over half a standard deviation below the mean of 100.

I'm sure they had some kind of TIMEFRAME, but if you can't take a JOKE, get the hell out of this thread or lay off the "omg must defend bush from ebil liberals!" mentality. You don't see any one in here bitching about Canada winning stupidest government when there are better choices? No

That's because we know our government is stupid.. and I voted for them too. LOL. But they are sadly the only real choice we have in Canada. It's the Liberal party (which is the government now) or the far right whack-jobs which will never win an election in Canada or the far left, which is even too left for this liberal.. ;)

That is an urban legend. Comments like that are just as helpful to the political process as stating John Kerry’s “I voted for it before I voted against it." Which made a lot of sense in context and was not ridiculous.

I'm not convinced.
From this side of the world, it comes out pretty dumb!
If he'd said "...because we want to know what can be done and put a stop to it" then maybe, just maybe, it might have credibility.
But NO...
He's got speech-writers, he's got people to cover his a$$ for this sort of thing, so why does he make so many BLUNDERS?
And it's not like it's supposed to be an amateur debate competition or anything, where mistakes don't mean the end of the world.
This is politics on a global level. Why would THEY (yes, THAT "They") have him up there without being able to hold his own?
As it is, it sounds like a slip. And with him being unable to consider the ramifications that his choice of words may have, it is pretty dumb!
But HIGH-LARIOUS!
I'm off to bed.

You have a point. But it still isn’t the dumbest thing he has said. Personally I like:
“Sometimes when I sleep at night, I think of Hop on Pop.”
And I hate when people try and defend him "just because they're American" (although this isn't always the case - some people who agree with him are just plain fool enough to actually AGREE with him, regardless of nationality), because he seems profoundly evil to me.
I defend anybody that is getting picked on unfairly. I’m good like that.
Plus, I like to correct people. :p
On another note, I don’t think he is evil. I think he is a coward, like most politicians. He is too scared of the big corporations to stand up to them and secure the boarders, and he is to scared of his base to advocate anything even remotely libertarian.

As previously stated, he doesn’t not deserve the award; he has said far stupider things. I’m sorry if someone defending a politician they can’t stand on principal interferes with your pathetic bi-polar understanding of politics. I bet the only political parties you know about are the Republican party and the Democratic party.

-Crystal meth for Stupidest Trend of the Year

I object on this one.

1) There has been a great number of braindead trends of that year. Futile-but-oh-so-fashionable war protests, to mention one thing. Retro-80's, to mention another.

2) Crystal meth cannot be judged as stupid until tried. Ok so it's addictive like a sumbitch but did the test panel actually check that other side of the coin? I think not. They should've. In my experience... let's just say there are far more stupid trends than this one. See point 1.

First of all, I wouldn’t want to hurt Moore, he is an entrepreneur in one of the highest spirits. He makes a product that even his opponents purchase, if only to fight him. He has made money by marketing himself, and he is a fat ugly man. Brilliance. A true free-market capitalist.

I am well aware that he isn’t a Democrat. Once, long ago, he was closely involved with Nader. They parted ways, though, because Moore said they should compromise with the Democrats and Nader, being the staunch Green/independent that he is, refused.
I just think it's funny that you seem to think that I am a Republican.
