I heard something about that. Apparently, there's going to be something called the 'Procession of the Equinox', where magnetic north is going to switch from Polaris to Vega, causing earthquakes and EMPs worldwide( :( ). But also, its supposed to be the start of the Age of Aquarius( :) ).

What's not to believe? The motion of the galaxy and our position within it is fairly straightforward. As it happens, the Mayans were great astronomers and mathemeticians. They figured out procession (the fact that the Earth wobbles on its axis) and that the constellations change over time.

What effect will all this have on us? I'm going with... none. Even if the Earth is close to the sun on that particular day, so what? That marginal shift will not alter temperatures in any significant way.

A much larger effect is the tilt of the Earth with respect to the incoming radiation from the sun. The obvious example is summer and winter. In the northern hemisphere we are farther away from the sun during summer and closer during winter, but summer is warmer because we are titled (at 23.5 degrees with respect to the solar plane) towards the sun.

Since December 12, 2012 is in the winter, no worries.

Nope. The sun comes closest to the earth on the winter solstice every year, yet it's still cold up here. Distance from the sun doesn't affect temperature, as the fluctuation is so small.

Yeah, a big honking party is what it is. The Mayans didn't actually predict anything. Their calendar count simply starts again that day, like when we went from 1999 to 2000.

Even if we are to cross the Galactic Equator, there's nothing special about that region of space, there's no "rift" (although we are in a sparsely populated region of space on the edge of one arm), and if there were, it would be a few light years wide, we would certainly be passing through it now.

Nothing will happen, enjoy your Christmas.

Maybe. Mr. Bush must leave the White House on 20 January 2009, when his successor is sworn in. As to who will win in 2008, and if they'll be re-elected in 2012 is an unknown.

Personally, I don't think that she is electable... she's far too polarizing of a choice, and isn't even very popular within the Democratic Party (Dean's people and Kennedy's people both generally dislike her, nevermind Kerry's supporters). She could win NYC and other large (liberally leaning) cities easily. But in the suburbs? Who knows.

I'm not sure the "ancient" Mayans foretold anything happening when their calendar rolled over - it's the nature of calendars to roll over in some way. If they did make any prophesies, I wouldn't rely on a prophesy forecasting the end of the world in 2012 when those making the prophesy failed to foresee the end of their own civilisation some 600 years prior to that.

The number of the beast is actually 661. I read that in the Guardian a few weeks ago. Some counting gone wrong somewhere along the line. The bible is so messed up and contradictory they can't even get their numbers right..

Ahhh the human ability to think that everything focuses on this pretty blue-green ball of rock travelling thruogu the universe. Its really quite cute actually. The greatest evoultion man will encounter is when people can enjoy existance without themselves bieng the pinnacle of existance.
Translation: No man-made calendar can predict cosmic events. No mathmatition can possibly account for the billions of variables in the cosmos that would have any effect on thwe Earth, and more specifically, people. Humannus is not destined to die out, but it is destined to evolve. Follow the logical progression of any species and natural laws still apply.
As for "holy texts" predicting armageddon, put yourself in the writers shoes for just a sec. Even if GOD him/her/itself sat on the couch next to you and told you to dictate notes, how much of what was said could you understand and write down? But wait, you dont actually write the stuff down, you have someone else dictate for you as you havent learned to write or read. Add the fact that you had to wait months or years before you found someone willing to write this stuff down, (from your memory) and write it in a way that couldnt be traced back to then or they would be killed.
While calendars may be fairly good at predicting crop seasons, and general timekeeping, there are no uniform standards that are directly linked to human existance. The chinese have one calendar, romans had another, messopotamians, mayans, all have different calendars based on the needs of the times. Mayans werent concerned with using a calendar to predict armageddon, the just wanted to know when to plant and harvest.
If a person chooses to sit up late at night worrying about when some mythical event ending the world is going to happen, then fine please do so. At lease this will give validity to some soothsayers wasted exsistence as his job was to spread fear in order to convert people to the religion of the day. Please spend all of your cash, buy yer little survival kits, skip the holidays then crawl into a little hole and wait. That will leave so much more room for me when I go on vacation.

If you have the patience to read enough, you'll see that Jesus has a little over 5 months to make himself known. Then the whole theory will be disproved. If this guy made it up, he actually put a lot of effort into this, but why wouldn't he leave out the 2005 bit and just leave it at 2012 to keep creditability until then? Could have picked a more likely situation to predict other than Jesus appearing... but we'll see I guess. In 5 months we'll all know whether it'll happen or not.
