The end of music as we know it is upon us

I was walking through fye the other day, looking for a copy of Blizzard of Ozz, and what I heard playing on the radio shall haunt me for the rest of my life. At first, I thought I was hearing the classic hit "Crazy Train", in my opinion the single greatest rock song of all time. However, the main riff was played on synthesizer, not guitar, and pitched two octaves too high. Then, and this is what absolutely kills me, I heard some asshole talking over the song. When I looked around, and saw nobody in the store speking loudly enough to drown out the song, I realized: "Somebody must be sampling the song and rapping over it." I swear to God, when that thought hit me, I just about started crying. If I ever discover whoever ruined the heavy metal anthem, I will create a hit list specifically for them. If there are any metal fans out there who can assist in my crusade, please do so.

Rap should never sample from heavy metal. Ever. Period. Especially not Blizzard-era Ozzy.

Put some Ozzy on your IPods, and crank up the volume when any of this newfangled music intrudes.
Either that, or change with the times.
Whatever

DINOSAUR!

You're about 20 years to late. Music began changing that way with the advent of the Sampler. Either get over it or don't listen to it. Those are your choices, because its NOT going away.

Bah, I thought this thread was about some invention that would feed music right into your brain cortex. But no, just another old guy complaining that things were better when they were kids.

(Not that they weren't, they were, it's the complaining that's annoying :D )

Hey, don't get me wrong. I've known for a long time that rap was consuming and destroying all decent music. Hell, I even managed to forgive Run DMC, Vanilla Ice, Et Al for ruining decent lassic rock songs. It's just... I don't know. For some reason, I thought Crazy Train would be immue to the disease. I never thought any of those rappers would ever have the high level of musical taste to recognize the greatness of the heavy metal.

I apologize. I'm grieving. It's a process.

Yup: my comments were not intended to be taken as a condemnation of the track. The reverse in fact. I was also aware that it wasn't actually samples used on the track, but making a posting saying "About twenty years too late to impart that pearl of wisdom to Public Enemy following their sampling of Slayer on the track 'She Watch Channel Zero'" just seemed far too obscure a reference to make to someone who is already biased against rap.

That is sacrelige to a metal classic. May that record store be struck by a meteorite.

My DINOSAUR comment aside, I DO love Crazy Train by Ozzy, so I can see where you're feeling miffed. My point is more that you can't do much about it. That weak-ass new track by Missy Elliot samples an electro classic (Jive, by Double-Deuce) and it irritates the hell out of me when I hear the mangling it received @ the hands of Timbaland or whoever the fuck ripped it off. But I really can't do anything about it except be miltitantly Anti-Sample when making my own music (which happens to be mostly dark, melodic type electro and techno for those that give a shit)

When an over used sample, or annoyingly used sample gets on my nerves, I just block it out and go listen to the orginal song its entirety so I can appreciate it in it full glory. A lot of times, when a group samples a great old tune, sales of that tune go up as a new genration gets exposed to it, even though as a small chunk initially.

Yeah, you know, cuz, like, rock on the radio is totally, like, underground and they aren't in it for the money, right?

I never thought any of those rappers would ever have the high level of musical taste to recognize the greatness of the heavy metal.

High level of musical taste? "Heavy metal" is just pop. ABABCB. The exact same crap but with distortion and they pander to a different crowd.

Sampling other artists music indicates a serious lack of creativity on the samplers part. C'mon, if you can't come up with you own music, then form a cover band, don't pretend to be a serious, original artist.

And here I was thinking you were among those that were freaking out over the latest DRM punishment being forced upon America.

In any case, I agree - I view rap as poetry, and while sampling can enhance it if done right, not many people ever do.

Doesn't weigh on my view of Ozzy at all, but still.
