NHL Rules Changes and the Draft Lottery

Well, for those who weren't watching, the Penguins won the draft lottery and, barring something ridiculous, will draft Crosby when time comes to go to Ottawa. A bit sour for myself, a Leafs fan, that my guys are stuck at #21. I'm also a little annoyed that the Habs get the number five spot.

Now then, as for the rules changes, what do you think of:

1: Removal of the Red Line
2: Addition of Shootouts after first period of Overtime
3: Four skaters to a side during Overtime
4: Enlargement of Offensive Zones
5: Rivalry-Based Schedules
6: Drug-testing at random points during the season

I'm for just about all these changes, though I think that the shootout, while intense, could wait until after a second overtime period.

I was sort of hoping you'd get Crosby, really. that way with the Rivalry-based schedule, he'd get mashed to a pulp by the Leafs, Flyers and Bruins.

The shootouts after overtime will be fun. And no more of the T-Word.

Leafs: No more money-spending ways. They will hardly be on top of Canadian ladder anymore.

Flyers: I love Jeremy Roenick and there seems to be lots of chemistry in Philly. A liittle more work marketing and they'll be great. But nothing the Habs can't handle.

Bruins: Bwahahaha, I'd love to see them get past the Quarterfinals for once.

Removing the redline is part of a plan to encourage more offensive play, and take the claws out of the Trap. The shootouts rule will include the regular season, many have mixed feelings about this. The four-men to a side thing for Overtime is another plan to speed up play. I doubt Detroit will really dominate, since they can't seem to hold it together in the playoffs anyway.

1: Removal of the Red Line

didn't they try it in the minor leagues but decided to scrap it?

2: Addition of Shootouts after first period of Overtime

No, its a team sport. Soccer sucks giant monkey ass. lets not imitate it.

3: Four skaters to a side during Overtime

Sure, opens the ice.

4: Enlargement of Offensive Zones

I'd prefer just switching to the International surface.

5: Rivalry-Based Schedules

I've seen these types of schedules written up and they are great. Well, for us Ranger fans, they're great. We have two other local teams and a couple Original 6 teams in our conference..

6: Drug-testing at random points during the season

Ya, get on that before its a big problem.

Or better yet, before putting in all these new rule changes......ENFORCE THE RULES YOU HAVE! Tell the refs to stop the clutching and grabbing. Make sure they don't give up 4 weeks into the season.

Drop the instigating rule. Fighting is a part of the game. You can't ban it.

1. Eliminates 'Trap' system. More offense. Eliminates the '2-Line Pass Offside' rule for some situations, making way for greater scoring chances.

2. The shootouts are going to be only regular season. Most of the players agree to it. No ties make the game more competitive and it's more exciting for the fans. Getting the fans back is what the NHL really needs to do right now.

3. Wasn't that always the case?

4. Detroit needs to rebuild. I doubt they'll be doing much dominating for a little while.

5. Rivalry-based schedule, fun. Should get the fans hyped up too.

6. Steroids won't be too much of a problem, I think, but it's a good thing.

They're toughening up on fighting. If you initiate a fight during the last five minutes of the game, you get a game misconduct and are given a one-game suspension. The coach of the player also gets a $10,000 fine.

I think it'll work out well. The most exciting play in hockey more often than not. Good way of developing goaltenders and young players too.

I'd prefer just switching to the International surface.
I don't and the players don't. The NHL and the NHLPA want to keep the traditional North American game. The Great One said that himself, too.

1: Removal of the Red Line: I like it; it should open up the passing game in the neutral zone.

2: Addition of Shootouts after first period of Overtime: Not a fan. Just too gimmicky.

3: Four skaters to a side during Overtime: Again, too gimmicky. I'd rather see the goalies with less armor.

4: Enlargement of Offensive Zones: Excellent change.

5: Rivalry-Based Schedules: Makes sense.

6: Drug-testing at random points during the season: More common sense.

1. Good idea. The league I play in did this and its great. It allows new offencive stratagies. The trap can still be done without the redline, I've played a team that did it.
2.Basicly they are trying to reduce the amount of ties in a season. People seem to dislike ties (remember the episode of the Simpsons were Bart and Lisa play hockey). If a game is played and there is a winner, their fans go home happy. The fans of the losing team are dissapointed. In a tie the fans of both teams are disapointed. Happier fans mean more tickets sold, which means more money. Besides I like watching the odd shootout.
3. Good idea. Makes the OT more offencive. Makes the trap harder.
4. I would rather see international size rinks, but that would require renovation of most of the rinks.
5. Sounds like a good idea.
6. Thats just common sence.

Well, we're talking about the NHL.

Thats what I was refering to. The minor leagues tried it so the NHL could see it in action and the owners decided to bury it.

I don't and the players don't. The NHL and the NHLPA want to keep the traditional North American game. The Great One said that himself, too.

Great, they can buy my tickets for me then. Screw the PA. They lost. They are whooped and have been for years. They merely benefitted from moron owners.

The reason they are bringing in all these Eastern European players with names we can't pronounce is because of their speed and agility. Opening the rink lets them utilize it.

Want to know why the owners won't agree to it? BECAUSE IT MEANS TAKING SEATS OUT OF THE ARENAS! They don't care about preserving the North American game. they are chasing bucks.
