3 men charged after cross-border tunnel sealed

Three Surrey men are facing drug charges after police discovered a secret cross-border tunnel in the Fraser Valley, running more than 100 metres underneath the 49th parallel – from Langley into Washington state.

Police say the 1½-metre high, one-metre wide tunnel runs from a metal Quonset hut just north of the border to an abandoned house in Lynden, Wash. – just 90 metres south of the border.

Francis Devandra Raj, 30; Timothy Woo, 34; and Jonathan Valenzuela, 27, face charges in the U.S. of conspiracy to distribute marijuana and conspiracy to import marijuana.

The trio are appearing on Thursday in a Seattle court.

The U.S. Department of Justice says cameras and microphones were placed in the house on the American side of the border earlier this month.

Authorities say they watched the three men carry hockey bags and garbage bags full of pot through the 110-metre tunnel across the border and into waiting vans.

Police say they believe it's the first tunnel they've ever found crossing the Canadian border. They say the tunnel is sophisticated, with a concrete floor, iron reinforcements and wooden supports.

It had been under construction for eight months, and was first spotted by Canadian border officials back in February.

Police moved in and sealed it on Wednesday, shortly after it opened. It will now be destroyed.

The poor fools--8 months constructing a nice, even tunnel, for profiting off of slobs that don't no what they're doing, and then they get busted as soon as they finish.

Why would the US-Canada border require a tunnel in the first place? I thought it was pretty open already.
