Derealization or Depersonalization

Does anyone have derealization or depersonalization? I was just wondering exactly how common this disorder is. Derealization is where the world doesn't seem real from your point of view, like everything is far away ... Depersonalization, well it's not feeling yourself, like your body is foriegn. I guess in some cases people have floated out of their bodies ... luckily that hasn't happened to me. A lot of strange thoughts go through your mind like ... what are humans, oh wait I'm a human ... huh. well hopefully someone out their understands ... if you are interested in finding more information on this disorder go to Depersonalization.info
thank you any replies, I greatly appreciate it!
lol in fact this disorder kinda makes me feel like this - :headbang:

Many times in my life I've felt a sense of detachment from what was going on around me, but I don't think that really qualifies as "derealization," does it?

I've never been diagnosed with anything like that, but I remember sometimes when I was a little kid I'd feel like everything going on around me wasn't real, like I was watching a movie. Is that what you mean?

nah I don't think so. I don't mean to scare you. what I have, and many others, is a constant feeling of detachment. It makes it very hard to even function in every day life. Luckily some medications are out there, but a perfect cure is far from being found.
so sometimes it's ok to feel detached ... for example during a tragedy, or if you're on an airplane ... things like that.

Is that a visual perception? or an analogy for detachment?
Nevermind, I just read what you wrote in #4.

more of an analogy for detachment, but sometimes my perception is off like things look so far away like I'm separated from the world by some kind of glass shield

Then I guess I had it, but maybe I grew out of it. I don't get that feeling anymore.

I suffer from depersonalization, and it's not common among people in general, but it's frighteningly common among abuse survivors.

I haven't been clinically diagnosed with either, but I do know what you mean. Sometimes I wonder, can this be real? Is this really my life? Am I really sitting here on the computer typing right now, or maybe I'm just have a particularly real and vivid dream? As far as depersonalization, I've felt that lightly sometimes in waking life, and often in dreams. I really can't seem to describe any particular moment where I've felt that, though.

yeah, I mean my theory is that it has something to do with sleep/wake patterns, like not getting enough sleep or too much. it just sucks though, I wish there was a way to feel normal and grounded.

I wonder what it is like to feel normal too. What IS "normal," anyway? Makes me think of the military term SNAFU - situation normal, all f***** up.

lol yeah I'm not quite sure what normal is ... I like to think that it's being able to have the confidence to live life to the fullest, but this damn disorder causes panic which just adds to everything

you know what they say though? apparently depersonalization/derealization can come about from being too smart ... like you realize too much too soon and it's just easier to detach yourself from reality.
or in some cases drugs bring it on ...
I have multiple disorders. I have skitzophrenia, derealization, depersonalization, and ADD. Theres some others which i forget what they are called. Does anyone know whether or not having these many disorders is common or not? Believe me, i take a s*** load of medicine every day. Im suprised these things don't O.D. me!

Yes, I am considered exceptionally smart, and I have always considered myself to be somewhat wiser than the next man/woman who comes along, and I have been diving into the depths of philosophy searching for clues to questions of life ever since I was eight years old. It seems that the more I discover, the more depressed I become. At this point, I'd much rather just hope that there is some sort of karmic force (or multiple karmic forces) in the universe. However, I keep getting the sneaking suspicion that the universe's great big joke is that everyone insists that there has got to be something better afterwards, when in reality, life was the gift, and death was, well, the annoyingly sentimental letter telling you exactly what you got. (I think that metaphor could have been better, but I must go now.)

yeah lol intelligence is killing us all. Has anyone ever seen the Meaning of Life by Monty Python? that movie doesn't have much to do with it's name, but it still makes you think. what is the point of it all? I mean any of us could die at any second ... and then what? what's next? but it's those kinds of thoughts that will drive anyone crazy ... whoo I'm a bit lightheaded just thinking about it.
