it seems that not many people lietsn to metal these days, and im just lookinf for fellowmetal heads to talk about metal with, so, what are your guys's favourite genres and bands from them? I like thrash, death, black, and speed metal. My favourite bands consist of: In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Cannibar Corpse, Heaven Shall Burn, The Acacia Strain (represent local metal!), Shadows fall (again, local metal rules), Killswitch Engage (their old stuff), and CARCASS (they f***ing rule my life) \m/ long live metal \m/

You gotta love the classic metal: old Metallica, Iron Maiden, old Ozzy, Black Sabbath. The new stuff is lots of people screaming with powerchords in the background. Nothing compared to the stuff from the 80s and 90s.

I like ye olde traditionale metal, such as Manowar (if you haven't heard Manowar, you haven't heard metal). I also like deathish bands like Agathodaimon and Dimmu Borgir, but I really love symphonic metal like Nightwish or Therion. Death metal isn't my favourite, it's a fine line between amazing and shite really.

Nightwish, Therion, Dimmu Borgir, Agathodaimon, Hammerfall, Manowar, Rammstein and In Flames I likee.

Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Jag Panzer, Hammerfall, Dream Evil, Symphony X, Savatage (hey, let's make a real nice friendly side project that makes more than we ever will!), Rhapsody, Dream Theater (not really metal, more prog rock, but Petrucci is a god), Power Symphony, and of course, classics like Maiden, old 'tallica, Sabbath, Dio, Megadeth, and the Priest.

I can't name a sub-genre I really like, I'm more of an artist orientated person. I'm partial to anything that utilises harmonic melody in it. I suppose I'd better just give you a list to give you a real idea:

System Of A Down
Unearth
Lamb Of God
Mindsnare
The Agony Scene
Evergreen Terrace
Killswitch Engage
Nodes Of Ranvier
Papa Roach
Rage Against The Machine
Slayer
Shadows Fall
Sakkuth

The only thing I tend to stray away from as a genre is Industrial, I've never been a big fan of it. I don't mind some of it but Static X and stuff like that I don't like in the slightest.

I like NWOBHM, thrash, power, speed, and the original heavy metal that started in the 70s.

Bands: Helloween, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Van Halen, Iced Earth, Metallica, Stratovarius, and Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff.
King Graham IV
23-07-2005, 01:01
OMG People, Guns and Roses!!!! Can't believe no one has said them yet!

Metallica (80s like most people) were amazing, Pantera especially Cowboys from Hell, Chimaira for Death Metal! SOAD is OK but can get a bit repetitive, and no guitar solos (or at least very small), although Mesmerize is a good album.

Velvet Revolver
Rammstein
AHC
Creed
In Flames are amazing
Lamb of God!
Machine Head
Motorhead?
Rage Against the Machine
Seether

So i like a bit of a mixture between old heavy metal and the new generation, however i do feel that the new stuff is very similar, which is why 70s and 80s metal will also kick ass.

Heavy and Death Metal all the way.

The millions of subgenres are one of the things that makes metal look stupid to us outsiders. You should condense them into maybe 3 or 4. Do there really need to be two kinds of "batttle metal?" Granted, I don't know a whole lot about the genre, but something tells me that they can't be so different as to warrant different names.

I like all metal (except most nu metal and almost all gore metal (yes nu metal as a genre is better than gore metal as a genre)) but lately I've been getting into doom. And here's my short list of bands I like, in no particular order:

Metallica, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Death, Slayer, Napalm Death, Carcass, Cathedral, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Venom, Voivod, White Zombie, Megadeth, Darkthrone, Yob, Paradise Lost, Sunn 0))), Earth, the Melvins, Opeth, Obituary, Repulsion, Bathory, Pentagram, Rhapsody, Dark Tranquillity, My Dying Bride, Testament, Tiamat, Sentenced, Iced Earth, Black Sabbath, Hypocrisy, Biohazard, Misery Loves Co., Judas Priest, Candlemass, the Plasmatics (their last two albums were metal) Orphaned Land, Into Eternity, Amorphis, the Haunted, Bolt Thrower, Sleep, Usurper, Pitchshifter, Vader, Godflesh, Ministry, Amon Amarth, Lacuna Coil, Kataklysm, Fear Factory, Kittie, Crisis, Extreme Noise Terror, Extra Fancy...there are more I'm sure, but I hope I didn't forget one I really like.

My favourite genre is Power Metal, but I also like New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Neo-Classical Metal, Trash Metal, Speed Metal and you have to love Traditional Metal.

I really don't like any of the Black Metal, Death Metal, Nu Metal, Doom Metal or Grindcore. But there are always exceptions to the rule. Though I still have to agree with what Bruce Dickinson shouted at Graspop this year. "Death to false Metal!"

My absolute favourite bands are: Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce and Megadeth.
Other bands I like are: Iron Maiden (Of course), Kamelot, Dimmu Borgir (Only respectable Black Metal band in my oppinion. Because all their songs don't sound alike and, you can hear the lyrics and they're extremely original.), Rhapsody, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Powerman 5000 and Ariya (They're Russian)

I like a fast rythem and well written lyrics that are more then simply repeating the chorus over and over. Of course I enjoy it all the more if I can connect to the lyrics in some way. I also prefer for lyrics to be good. So not all about devil worship and killing for the powers of Hell. To be perfectly honest, I find that laughable. But most important, a band has to be original. If it sounds like any other band, or every other song of theirs, then it's just... well crud really.

My favourite metal band of all time are Nightwish, they are really unique and Tarja is beautiful and sounds amazing! i also like:

Lacuna Coil
Iron Maiden
Early Metallica
Rammstein
Within Temptation
Blind Guardian
(Evanescence, im not entirely sure most people would class them as metal but i like em)
Megadeth
Pantera.

Im sure there are lots more but cant think of them at the moment

also *kind* of like rap metal, Linkin Park/Papa Roach but kinda gone of it recently

Well, I like almost all metal to a certain extent, so I'll just list favorites:

Genre-wise, I'm in love with Epic Metal. Especially Epic Metal with symphonic leanings. Band wise, my three favorite bands in the entire world are Symphony X, Manowar (I 100% agree with the guy who said you haven't heard metal until you've heard Manowar), and Nightwish.

I do, however, like to listen to metal-corish metal on occasion, such as Trivium and (the band that got me into metal) Machine Head.

Of course, NWOBHM will always be a sort of side-love of mine. Priest and Iron Maiden are like Zues and Hades when it comes to metal.

Lastly, the two originators of metal as a genre, Sabbath and Deep Purple, will once and always be like gods among men. I was at Ozzfest on Tuesday and, while every other band there rocked like no other ('specially Zakk Wylde, I love that guy, he's an awesome that mainstream metal has been missing since 'tallica cut their hair), the entire fucking crowd went fucking crazy when Ozzy first spoke from behind the curtain and didn't sit down until long after Geezer stepped off the stage.

Not to mention that Iommi is just plain the coolest looking guitarist since BB King.

Slayer and Sepultura are pretty good though.

I'm a closet metal freak. Going to high school in Seattle in the early 90s... anyone who listened to anything at all except for pearl jam, soundgarden and nirvana was stoned to death in the street. Don't get me wrong, I like their music, but I'm still sort of hesitant to admit to listening to hawt guys grunt and scream about eating dead people and I've been out of high school for almost a decade.

Anyway, so here's some of my choices, in various kinds of metal genres in no particular order. Disagree if you will, this is what I like.

Very early Manson. All of Metallica. Disturbed. Very early Korn. NIN. Type O Negative. Rammstein. Pantera. Rob & White Zombie. Coal Chamber. Cannibal Corpse. Morbid Angel. Static-X.

There are, of course, others ... and I listen to stuff outside of the metal category, but those are the ones I have in my daily playlist, so I guess they're my favs.

BTW I think that all the subcategories are because metal is such an underpopular/undervalued musical category that the people involved turn into some kind of afficionado/geek type mindset where they can sit around and talk about which 'type' of metal it is while listening to it for HOURS sometimes even days on end - kind of like the people you'll find at conventions arguing whether that's a futuristic rpg board/cardgame or a sci-fi and what the differences are. I personally absolutely adore all the different types, and all the conversations and comparisons of music and bands and songs that come with this sort of subculture that goes with the music.

I'm not sure the people posting here realy know metal music. 15 posts before someone mentioned SLAYER. Half of the bands people have talked about are not metal(ie Trivium, Dilinger escape plan, atreyu) these are emo acts.

The quality of todays metal in general is as horrible as it was 15 years ago. Instead of hearing Poison on the radio I'm stuck hearing Shadows Fall.

Have you ever seen "I, Claudivs"?

I don't mind a bit of Soilwork. I've got one of their albums... can't remember what it was called. These tracks are on it though:

Bastard Chain
The Analyst
Like the Average Stalker

Not horrible stuff, yet not something that really stays with you.

Sounds familiar. Not a bad album IMO.

Funnily enough, some of my metal tastes have also led me into non-metal bands such as:

Pink Floyd
The Doors
Led Zeppelin (I've always thought of them as rock, not metal)

"What kind of music are they?"
"Oh, they're metal"
"Oh, but i'm seeing System of a Down tomorrow. They're metal too."
"OMG NO THEY ARENT!!!!111!!1 THEY DONT CONFORM TO MY NARROW SELF RIGHTEOUS VIEW OF WHAT METAL IS!!! YOU SUCK!!"

Etc.
or it could go:

"Wanna go see Mayhem tomorrow?"
"What kind of music are they?"
"Oh, they're metal"
"Oh, but i'm seeing Good Charlotte tomorrow. They're SO metal \,,/"
"No they're not"

I like all Metal, but above all else the one and only Metallica, and no-likers of St. Anger be damned! OK, I'll admit it's not their greatest album, but there is no stopping the Metallidynasty until the band breaks up in my opinion. Now, it is true that not a lot of people listen to Metal anymore, and I have some ideas on WHY. OK, I know I'm gonna ge some flames for this, but let's face it folks: a lot of Metal is angst. It's good angst, but it's angst-filled agnsty angst, a lot of it. Now, we have Punk bands that are even angstier (and have, as a result, given angst a bad name in some cases). There's some good Punk out there; Green Day is Forever, and Good Charlotte has somehow found its way into my heart. The Killers ain't bad, either. Of course, 1/3 of punk is

:fluffle:

while another 1/3 is

:fluffle: :headbang:

and the last 1/3 is the ever-popular

:fluffle: :sniper:

start to notice a pattern there? Metal is a much wider view of that angst, while most of punk deals with love-angst. Apparently, that's the most popular, because that is what is replacing Metal...what is replacing us.

How has Metal changed to fit this? We've gotten a lot more onto the protest scene, of getting pissed off at anything and anyone that passes our way. Which is kind of sad, because I think the best Metal is the Metal with a more-or-less positive message. I find it kind of funny that Rock and Roll is the Devil's Music (tm), when for a lot of it's part it is a pretty good message to be sending out. Whearas pop and rap, slowly starting to merge together as some terrifying tentacled creature more evil than the sum of it's parts, degrade the souls of those who listen to thim more often than not. We must remain vigilant, though; Metal will come back, and even if it doesn't, something will come along that will replace is and be better. That is the way of music. Have faith, folks, and peace out. Er, peace out HARDCORE!!!

System of a down - nu-metal
Death angel - thrash metal
murderdolls - never heard of them
queens of the stone age - stoner rock/grunge
deftones - alternative rock/post-punk
ill nino - never heard of them
fear factory - thrash metal/ death metal (?) (industrial with some of their stuff)
farmer boys - never heard of them
edguy - technical metal
korn - nu-metal
Rammstein - industrial metal
nine inch nails - industrial/electronic rock
tool - alternative rock

...my humble opinions, feel free to vehemently disagree with me ;)

...my humble opinions, feel free to vehemently disagree with me ;)

Hehehe, i'll try, but you're mostly right :p

System of a down - nu-metal

Hmm, I don't think so. Nu-metal is usually -almost exclusively- overly dark and angsty. I can't really identify them with any other nu-metal bands. They're different.

Death angel - thrash metal

Don't know them.
murderdolls - never heard of them

Nu-metal, if i'm thinking of the right band.

queens of the stone age - stoner rock/grunge

Exactly right. Saw them live the other night :D

deftones - alternative rock/post-punk

Hmm. Yeah, though i'd label them "Alternative metal", because "alternative rock" could cover stuff like, say, Weezer as well.

ill nino - never heard of them

Alternative rock, bordering on metal...sortof.

fear factory - thrash metal/ death metal (?) (industrial with some of their stuff)

Yeah.

farmer boys - never heard of them

Me neither.

edguy - technical metal

Yep.

korn - nu-metal

Yep.

Rammstein - industrial metal

Yep.

nine inch nails - industrial/electronic rock

Yep.

tool - alternative rock

Hm, again, I think they're heavy enough to warrant the metal classification.
