The Dragon...Chinese style! Not your dumb Western perverted version that kidnaps haughty princesses and gets slain by dumb princes, but the magical, majestic Chinese creature associated with good fortune and imperial glory.

I like pixies, not to be confused with faries who do not fly and are not small. European dragons are pretty neat to, because they are reptlies who are big and fly.

I also have as soft spot in my heart for rocs. People can't resist contesting the word in scrabble (rocs are the giant birds that would fly off with elephants.)

The Bonacon (http://www.eaudrey.com/myth/bonnacon.htm), for humour value if nothing else. A Bonacon only appears twice in English heraldry, both grants being within 6 months of each other sometime in the 16th century IIRC. I like to imagine a clerk, new to the job, in the English College of Arms, digging around for something that hasn't been done to death for all the Elizabethan nouveau noble, and -- maybe the lighting was poor -- pulling this one out of the bestiary. Two regrettable grants of arms later, he's out on his ear and the whole thing gets hushed up.

This talk of mythical beasts reminds me of a dream my friend once had. He was stoned off his ass, and feel asleep listening to The White Stripes: Seven Nation Army. He drempt that he was the general of a 7 nation army that had marched down to the underworld to storm the Gates of Hell and rid the world of evil. In the back of the army, a group of slaves were pulling a massive wooden stage where the White Stripes were playing the beat from Seven Nation Army over and over, in loo of war drums. He said I was one of the 7 generals, his right hand man. When we got to Hell, the music stopped, and he gave a dramatic speach to the soilders. Everyone had swords and axes and armor and shields and shit. Then, unexpectidly, the gates of Hell open, and Satan is standing there. He is massive, red, with flaming eyes, and a forked tail. He just stairs at the army, and everything is silent. Then, he goes back in, and the gates close. Then without warning, thousands of demonic imps attack from the sides, and the army is thrown into battle! The music starts back up again, at the bulildup part, still no words. All around is the sounds of men dieing, metal and claws going through flesh. Them the gates open once more, and Hell Hounds flood out and decend on the army. My friend, Naveed, the one who is dreaming, kills scores of them with his greatsword and golden armor. I am in a bloodlust, with little armor and two medium scimitars flashing. Then, Cerberus, the 3 headed dog of hell, comes bounding out, tearing through our lines. Naveed goes after it, wounding one of the heads, but another bites him across the torso, crushing his armor, leaving him bleeding to death. I leap at the mighty beast, cutting and slashing. He bits quick, but I move like lightning. After incapacitating two of the heads, I slide under the beast, sticking my scimitars in it's final neck as I do so. I pick up the mace of a fallen man on the other side. The last thing Naveed sees before he dies and the dream ends is Satan himself, now joinging the battle, burning me to a crisp with a glance for killing his pet.....
