Gosh darn it, I LIKED that character!
Have you ever watched a TV show, or read a novel series, or followed a movie story, and just wanted to claw the eyes out of the author for killing off (or otherwise removing) a character? Some person who brings something good to the series, the pretty character or the emotional person or the smart one, something that's not shared by anybody else. Or even if they're no different from the other characters, they're still nice and bring something crucial that wasn't there before. Well, finally, a place for you to bitch about it where somebody else might actually read it, instead of your family and friends giving you dirty looks 'cause you won't shut up about it. So, let us know who you think really should have been kept around.
For me, it's Dr. Janet Frasier (Played by Teryl Rothery) on Stargate: SG1. First off, she brought a non-military character to the fore-front. She was the only frequently recurring character who wasn't a front-line soldier, didn't see combat on any regular basis, or had some basis in a non-military profession. Daniel Jackson, an archaeologist, sees more action than most Marines. Samantha Carter, an astrophysicist, is also an Air-Force officer with the military training and experience to back it up. Jack O'neil is a normal soldier, as is George Hammond (though he's a bit past field duty). Janet brought variety to the show.
Secondly, she was a friend to Samantha Carter. Outside of Pete (Who I'd also have loved to see in more episodes) she is the only person to have interacted with Carter in anything approaching a normal situtation. They were pals beyond merely 'work friends' (As she was with Jack, Teal'c, and Daniel), they were together when not on the base and did normal things together. It brought depth to an otherwise two-dimensional character (All Sam did was work and, whenever she did non-work things, it was because of some extraordinary situation).
Third, she was just an interesting person. I mean come on, being a single mother to a teenage daughter is hard enough (Just watching my own mom makes me feel tired), but make that daughter a genetically modified alien whose entire civilization was wiped out by Nirrti and you get a whole new level added on. She's also one of the worlds brightest doctors, a pioneer in her field, and a nice person.
So, who do you think should have been kept around?
In the Forgotten realms series, i got really pissed when Wulfgar was killed by the yochol. but then like 3 books later he was revived, so its all good, but i was pissed when i first read the part where he died.
{snip}
agreed... Fraiser was a cool character.
what they should do, is if O'Neill (2 L's) is now a desk jocky, bring in an alien to replace him... those reptillian critters that the Gould used before humans were discovered for instance.
People die, an author who gets rid of a beloved character is a good author. Face it, you aren’t going to care if its somebody you hate or don’t care about to much.
You're behind the times, Jack's been a desk jockey for nearly a full season now and he's already been replaced. Originally Carter was simply promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and SG:1 was kept at three people, but in the new season (which started three days ago on Friday) Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell (Played by Ben Browder of Farscape fame) has been transferred to the SGC and placed in command of SG1.
I was angry with the X-Files. David Duchovny was a greedy little shit who ruined the last two seasons by barely being there. And then they brought in the Terminator. And some other woman who was on the show for, gratefully, only a short while.
And Star Trek: TNG pissed me off with killing that one woman early in season one or two. I didn't like her though. I just didn't like the idea of Star Trek being so assertive :p

Wolf Larsen in Jack London's Sea-Wolf.
Not a likable man, but interesting...
It doesn't annoy me as much. I've done it myself. One story I wrote features three major characters for the whole story; then they disappear in the epilogue (get killed off? altered?) which is about two other characters discussing these as events that occurred 50 years ago. There were a few stories in which I wanted a dead character to survive, but on rereading as a more mature and older individual, I realize that their deaths were necessary.

Sirius Black was dead sexy. *weeps and weeps*
Jesus getting killed pissed me off. That was the ultimate shaft. I wanted to claw the author's eyes out, but then I realized it was God who came up with the whole idea and decided against it after reading about what he did to people who touched the Ark of the Covenant.
Another one was the X-Files. Mulder was cool, but they replaced him with that lousy Agent Dogget (Yay for another prefabricated cop/agent personality).

I'll take it I was the only happy one when Janet died? I tend to dislike the doctors in some sci-fi programs...
Someone that sholdn't have been killed off so quickly was One, he rocked!
Marcus Cole in Babylon 5. He sacrificed himself to save Susan's (Ivanova) life, and that's just about the most impossible choice one could make. Both Susan and Marcus were incredibly deep characters (Characteristic of B5), and to have either of them die was a horrible prospect. But, Marcus died with nobility and knowing it was worth the trade, and Susan continued to have an illustrious role in the military and later an important role in Sheridan's fledgling nation. But damn if he wasn't cool. =(
Another chatacter I was sad to see die was the Centauri, Minister Virini. He wasn't a pivotal figure, but he struck me as one of the very few Centauri who had good intentions and was constrained by circumstance. Very likeable character.
Ok, almost all the character deaths I'm upset about are in Babylon 5. And the absence of them, too. Oooh, how I want to see Bester burn. *seethes*
But yes, Dr. Frasier's death was pretty sad as well. It was a very good episode, though.

Oh, no question there. I almost (Stress the 'almost') teared up, it was phenominally done (Unlike Daniel Jacksons first 'death', which was actually on earlier today, where I just kinda wanted him to Ascend already).
JuNii, do you mean Vala? Yeah, she's back, too. Right now her and Jackson have ancient Goa'uld prison bands on and, if they seperate for any period of time, they both grow sick and die.

In 24, this past season - if anyone watched that - they killed off the wife/matriarch of the terrorist family, Dina Araz. That character was wonderful! She was evil, efficient, and she believed in her cause, although she loved her son enough to give it up for him (he wasn't worth it.) And she DIED! I was angry.
actually... when it comes to Deaths of Characters...
The one that brings tears to my eyes is actually in a comic book series.
"Crisis on Infinate Earths"
and the death is Kara... the original SuperGirl.
no other Character death comes close.

Being a writer, I can say that killing a character is the hardest thing I have to do. After I've worked with this guy or gal for three hundred pages, exerpts, and bloopers, I hate that final scene.
I mean, I know the guy! He's really a good guy, he's got some problems, but he could work them out! Things were just starting to look up, and he might have even turned things around if he had a little longer-
No, he's gotta die for the story. His death moves the other characters along, and no one could survive that situation-
Oh, come on, have him make a surprise re-appearance in scene ten, just bust through the door with a quippy line, and everyone will be SO HAPPY!
HE MUST DIE! IF HE DOESN'T STAY DEAD THE MOMENT IS MEANINGLESS!
That's so... *sniffle*... harsh. *sniffle*. He was my friend!
Oh, get over it.
At least make it a glorious scene.
Can't do it. It has to be tragic, and glory isn't tragic enough.
You're a bastard! *CRY*
Oh, for Christ's sake... listen... I'll write a spin-off.
With that character in it?
Yeah, yeah. Whatever.
YAY!
... anywho, you get the point. It's not easy to kill them, either.

And Star Trek: TNG pissed me off with killing that one woman early in season one or two. I didn't like her though. I just didn't like the idea of Star Trek being so assertive :p
Tasha Yar! Goddammit that pissed me off! It was so unexpected. They go to a planet with some sort of semi-omnipotent oil creature and it just offs her without warning. She was my favourite character - an orphan from a renegade colony with a past of substance abuse.
When they brought her back as her own daughter in those incomprehensibly ludicrous Romulan alternate time line episodes, it felt like they were a bit sorry they did it and had to give fans hope that there was an alternate reality where she wasn't dead. Well, duh!
Major Harry Potter spoiler.

Whos the Author?? I've seen things where heaps of major characters die and thats very depressing.
Oh God, "A Song of Ice and Fire", man, those books have broken my heart so many times. George R.R. Martin is a bastard.
First there was Ned Stark, which fucking TRAUMATISED me. He was such a cool, decent, honourable character surrounded by assholes. It was the first fantasy novel I'd read where I thought "That's just not fair!" Not only that, he gets a shitty death, executed in front of his daughter.
Then there was Khal Drogo. Who was awesome and ended up in a crappy state of living death, before being mercifully smothered by his wife.
Then Renly Baratheon, who is on the verge of making everything better. Of restoring honour and dignity to the lands, when he gets his throat slit by that damned demon witch of his brothers.
Then there was... *breaks off and starts weeping*

Oh yes, and from when I actually watched Charmed, the sister.. What's her name. I can't actually remember.

I don't come over the death of Chris Perry in Charmed. Okay, he still sort of lives (i.e his younger self), but the baby Chris is no compensation for the adult. And I'm not only talking about the looks, his character was great, too. You never knew what stupid plans he had next...
And I'm going to kill J.K.Rowling if she doesn't bring back Sirius soon!!! (because I don't believe that he's actually dead, I think that he'll return, after all, he has just disappeared inside a strange room)

I do indeed... I hope she'll soon publish book 7... I want to know what'll happen next... and I'm not that sure that the character who passed away died for good....
I once read a fantasy about some British outcasts going on a quest to get something or other, then surviving a battle against about 60,000 enemy soldiers, coming back, and then the four main characters get betrayed by their comrades and the story ends with them on the verge of execution. I hated the author for leaving the ending so open-ended. :(

The death of Obi-Wan Kenobi was really hard on me as a child, as was the death of Tasha Yar. I didn't like that Obi-Wan bought it because he was a lot like my father. I didn't like it that Tasha bought it because she was my first crush as a child (or possibly the second; I was quite attracted to Claire Huxtable at the time too, but anyway. . .).
As an adult, I was sorry to see Hudson and Vasquez buy it in Aliens. That was such a good war movie.
Book 7 of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. They got rid of about everyone. :( Including a certain animal that had been in the books since the third one.
In Buffy, the episode where the Mother is found dead at home was a real shocker!
Also Tara's death at the end of season 6 and Anya's death in the last episode!
Actually, they'd originally planned to kill the mother off within the first season. Right at the beginning as a matter of fact. It was only her popularity that dragged her on to season 5 (I think it was 5). Plus, they wanted to bring Tara back to life a while after she was killed by Warren, it was only scheduling conflicts between the actors that prevented it. To bad.

I have to say in LOST when Charlie 'died' I was very sad, but then he wasn't really dead, so I was happy.
Sirius has got to be alive still, my sister is convinced as well.
Lets see... other things and people that have died...
someone said they were upset when Hector in Troy died... come on... Troy was like the crappiest movie ever, it wasn't correct at all... and he had to die...
um...
someone else mentioned Sauroman in LOTR, they didn't do his death properly, that's the only reason I was sad when he died
someone else said, as an author, it's not easy killing off characters, i totally agree. Actually... i don't think I have ever succesfully killed off a character... except for once, but it was really easy because it was a horrible story written by a few of my friends and all the characters were based off people we knew and one of my friends was doing a horrible injustice to another of my friends, so i gladly killed her off to keep her from further pain and humiliation
other than that i don't think i have succesfully killed a character... not even a minor... ok, minor ones i have, although i haven't wrote their deaths scenes yet, i already know they're dead... but no major or semi-major characters... yet... it is incredibly difficult

Also, if anyone has read the redwall series, you know that favorite characters die in EVERY book. the one that sucked most was in loamhedge, when the squirrel and the otter died... that sucked greatly.Oh yeah, I forgot all about the Redwall series! I was really mad at the author for killing off Klitch in Salamandastron. He should have survived and led an army afterwards to attack the place! Oh well... :(
Then there was Rose in Martin the Warrior...I like mice... :( But really, her death was important for the whole series, otherwise it (all the other books that is) wouldn't have happened.
And The Outcast of Redwall killed off all the interesting characters from start to finish: all those poor foxes, Veil, Swartt Sixclaw... *me sighs*
Does the same thing happen in the new book (ok, September 2004... but IRL, fairly new lol)?

As long as the character's death is relevant to the story and isn't just done for the sake of drama to try to increase viewer/reader numbers, I have no problem with it.
What DOES annoy me is when characters are killed off then miraculously brought back to life in some cheesy, deus-ex development further down the line. I cannot STAND that. If you're going to take the brave step of introducing some emotion into your storyline, don't chicken out after the fact.
