What are your top 10 albums?

Kanabia

Simple question, really. And put them in order. No cop-outs like "aww but I like all these the same." Too bad. You have to decide which you'd want to keep more, because lets say your house is burning and you only have a few seconds to decide...so in what order do you grab the 10 that you wish to save? :p

Mine-

1. Nirvana - In Utero
2. Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
3. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I
4. Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
5. Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruits for Rotting Vegetables
6. Tool - Aenima
7. Alice in Chains - Dirt
8. Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity
9. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
10. Black Sabbath - Master of Reality

Since all my albums are contained in the same case, I'd save all of them, but if that weren't the case, I'd save:

10)Nightwish - Once
9)Lord of the Rings III - Soundtrack
8)Lord of the Rings II - Soundtrack
7)Lord of the Rings I - Soundtrack
6)My depression compilation
5)The Best of Bond
4)Within Temptation - Mother Earth
3)L'Âme Immortelle - Gezeiten
2)Rammstein - Reise, Reise

W-ell, that is a difficult question... Sorry, but I don't think i'd be able to put this in much of an order other than alphabetically :p How much I like each album depends entirely on what mood I'm in. In fact, I'm sure if you ask me this same question a week from now, you'd get a different answer.

So, in ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

Burzum - Hliðskjálf
Einstürzende Neubauten - Ende Neu
Finntroll - Jaktens Tid
Haggard - Eppur Si Muove
Laibach - WAT
Moonsorrow - Kivenkantaja
Shaman - Idja
Therion - Secret of the Runes
Tristania - World of Glass
Ulver - Themes From William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven and Hell

Having said that, at the moment my favourite is probably Themes From William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven and Hell. Ulver just bridge so many genres that I'm interested in, Black Metal, Folk, Folk Metal, Electronica, Industrial.... And this album kinda represents a crossing point of all those styles, while still being something totally different and compelling on it's own terms. Plus this was my first introduction to the mythology of William Blake. What a genius/crazy weirdo.

EDIT: although technically all of these are only on my ipod and pc's hard drive, along with about 35 gig of other music :p So in the burning house scenario, I'd easily be able to save all of it without having to make a top ten list ;)

You feel that Midian is better than Cruelty and the Beast?

As a cd, yes. I like the songs off of Cruelty and The Beast better, but as Midian is sort of a concept cd for Clive Barker's work, it works better as a whole than Cruelty and the Beast.

Help She Can't Swim, Super Fashionista Dance Troupe
The Futureheads, The Futureheads
Much much respect for the two above entries! (I know you may not believe me, but the Futureheads are actually my friends from Sunderland, I used to live there, and weirdly I used to go to scouts with Baz and Dave Hyde. The story continues from there, but probably deserves a separate post..)

OK, mine:
* Fugazi - In on the Kill Taker
* Shellac - Action Park
* Trail of Dead - Madonna
* Bluetip - Post Mortem Anthems
* Mogwai - Rock Action
* Q and not U - Different Damage
* The Futureheads - The Futureheads
* The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
* Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place
* Wire - Chairs Missing

That's the best I could come up with at short notice. Needless to say it changes constantly. I think individual songs can stand out for someone more than whole albums. For example, these are some songs that I always have time for:
* Les Savy Fav - Meet Me in the Dollar Bin
* Q and not U - X-Polynation
* Retisonic - Filthy Way to Lose Yourself
* McLusky - Slay!
* Blonde Redhead - Suimasen

Well, I like Von Hier An Blind more because its general musical style is a little bit nachdenklicher than Reklamation. Wheras the latter one has relatively many "happy" or "funny" songs (like "Die Reklamation", "Aurelie" to some extent also "Müssen Nur Wollen"), the songs are on Von Hier An Blind are either a more aggressive or more melancholic (especially "Darf Ich das Behalten?", my favorite from the album).
Basically, the whole record seems to be more mature than the first one. But I really, really like them both and when I had to decide which one is better, Reklamation came in a very, very close second.
On their official site, there are samples from all current songs, so you can judge from yourself.

Difficult - heres a list, but if you ask me tomorrow or the day after it would likely look quite different:

The Clash - Sandinista
Rorschach - Remain Sedate
Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ
Jawbreaker - Bivouac
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To hold Us Back
Michelle Shocked - Arkansas Traveller
Ian Dury & The Blockheads - New Boots And Panties
MC5 - Back In The USA
Patti Smith Group - Horses
Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness

(It is criminal that I haven't managed to fit The Slits Cut LP on that list.)

If there was a fire and I was standing next to my record collection though, I'd be more likely to actually grab one of my boxes of singles - in comparison LPs are relatively replaceable.

All 90 or so of my CDs are in the same leather case. Can't I save them all?You are the only person who remotely answered the question correctly (an "album" was the designation for a binder of slipcovers for multiple 78 RPM shelac/hard rubber/bakelite analog recording platters (later called "records").

SO, IMO Sdaeriji wins the prize for actually HAVING an "album" :D

(I used to have many - including not a small number of Caruso Operas... but I had to sell them when I moved cross country... :( )

Edit: My "Album" is a small wallet which currently holds 4 ea. 1GB memory chips for my PDA... each one has roughly 10-20 CD's encoded. Not quite an iPodling, but more useful overall...

You are the only person who remotely answered the question correctly (an "album" was the designation for a binder of slipcovers for multiple 78 RPM shelac/hard rubber/bakelite analog recording platters (later called "records").

SO, IMO Sdaeriji wins the prize for actually HAVING an "album" :D

(I used to have many - including not a small number of Caruso Operas... but I had to sell them when I moved cross country... :( )

Hey! I still have "albums" too. I prefer the term "record" though. Like Jackson Browne says, he too prefers to call it a "record" like a record of events. Keeps him grounded. :)

You know, your the second person Ive ever talked to that has said that "Final Cut" is thier favorite one.

and I know a lot of Floyd fans!

Musically, I think its nearly as brilliant as thier earlier stuff, but moodwise..it makes me want to chew open my own wrists..
Particularly, "The Fletcher Home .." and "Two Suns in the Sunset".

My top ten list has changes as often as the weather which isn't too much in Michigan right now. It's hot, humid, and nothing else. In any case, here's the ten albums that I find myself liking most right now.

1. Explosions in the Sky - Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever
2. Sun Ra - Super-Sonic Jazz
3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
4. Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures

7. Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden
8. Albert Ayler - Love Cry
9. Santana - Caravanserai
10. Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage
*Bonus!* 11. Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz

Edit: I thought about it for a second, and I just had to add Frank Zappa. This... is the central... scrutinizer!

Why, were you going to recommend it?

Not especially: one of those releases that is worth listening to at least once, but hardly a fantastic album. Zorn has shown that he can do more interesting cover versions when he isn't so much in awe of the original musician, and really his Coleman covers are less satisfying than his own compositions.

As a cd, yes. I like the songs off of Cruelty and The Beast better, but as Midian is sort of a concept cd for Clive Barker's work, it works better as a whole than Cruelty and the Beast.Yes, but Cruelty and the Beast is also a concept album, and has significantly better lyrics.

Well, if the CD includes lyrics, I usually leave the case lying around for a week or so until I've given a new CD a few listens, and have the lyrics down pretty good.

After that...it goes in my desk drawer with all the others, though it's getting crowded in there. :p

Now see, this presents a conundrum. I dont really have any particularly favorite albums - ya know, ones you could put in and just listen to over and over. There are a few albums that I really enjoy, but almost any album I've ever bought has had at least 2-3 songs I usually skip over. However, all that considered, I'd have to say that my favorite artists (in no particular order and notwithstanding the mix discs I make with well over 200 mp3s on em) along with the album of which I have the most tracks:

1. The Offspring - Americana
2. AC / DC - Live
3. Soundtrack to Gladiator

More or less in order:

10. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
9. Aria - Kresheniye Ognem (English translation - Baptism By Fire)
8. Dream Theater - Awake
7. Pink Floyd - The Wall
6. Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes
5. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
4. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
3. Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (technically, I've only listened to the title track of this album, but it's just so mind-blowingly awesome that I can't imagine the other songs could drag it down this list more than one or two places - and that's only if they're horrible)
2. Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
1. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime

I consider the last two albums to be, basically, virtuoso masterpieces, the likes of which have and will seldom, if ever, be duplicated by other bands, or even themselves. I could listen to either of them every day for who knows how long and love every minute of it.

I realize that my selection of albums is... well, a little metal-heavy. :) But I can't say there is much else out there that both a)appeals to my tastes and b)has good replay value. Classical is about the only other genre (aside from, occasionally, rock) that can also meet these two criteria. But I usually get my classical fix from playing the viola.

Even if you do think my musical tastes could use some expansion/revamping/etc, just take this into account - as recently as 2002, I wouldn't have been able to even think of 10 albums to list, and the ones that I would have listed would all have been Weird Al. (not that I still don't appreciate his music, but...)

In no order:

Beatles - White Album
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III
Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts
Decemberists - Picaresque
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill
Dresden Dolls - The Dresden Dolls
The Shins - Chutes too Narrow
Radiohead - Ok Computer
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
Cannot think of a name

I wonder if I can do this. None of you ever care, but that's never stopped me before (hmmmm, feeling a little sorry for myself today it seems-that's the second pity party post I've made...)

Albums all being should have-
Kind of Blue Miles Davis
Now's the Time Charlie Parker
Giant Steps John Coltrane

That you'd dig if you tried it-

Out of the Cool Gil Evans (bonus-...Plays Hendrix. It was supposed to be with Hendrix but he died right before the date so Gil recorded the album later on with new arrangements)

Cantelope Island Herbie Hancock (bonus Headhunters/Thrust if you need more of da funk.)
Ah Hum Charles Mingus...but you all knew that one.

Shit I like so...
Ferociously Stoned Cherry Poppin' Daddies. (Zoot Suit Riot free album)
Solid Sender Sex Mob
Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Any album, don't matter.
Ruby Vroom Soul Coughing

That's probably a list that would change hour to hour. Excpet for the Dozen, they of course rule.

Very good list - I couldn't fault it. It wouldn't be the 10 I'd nominate, but if I got shipwrecked with those 10 albums I wouldn't complain about the music selection...:D

Hm, before even starting, I know 10 will not be enough. But since my favourite records are all in one folder, I'd just grap that. Here goes:

2) Pink Floyd - Final Cut
3) Bruce Dickinson - Chemical Wedding
4) Stephen Duffy - Keep Walking
5) Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
6) Queen - A Night at the Opera
7) Robbie Williams - Live at Knebworth
8) Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio
9) Peter Gabriel - IV
10) Tears for Fears - Raoul and the Kings of Spain

Still in my folder are:
11) Roger Waters - In The Flesh
12) David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive
13) Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
14) Tori Amos - Under the Pink
15) Metallica - S&M
16) King Crimson - Court of the Crimson King
17) Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
18) Roger Waters - Radio Kaos
19) Stephen Duffy - Music in Colours
20) Queensryche - Empire

Being in my "best of my collection" folder, these records get listened to at least once a month.
