Suicide By Mod:

I am very interested in the Idea of Suicide By Mod, I find it interesting that some people, rather than simply quiting the game must be kicked off...

So If you have any examples, funny too, of suicide by mod please post.

What do you think of it?
Is it a good thing?
Is it a good way to end you life at NS, if you can't end it yourself?

Yes, because it can be hilarious.

No, because I've been a Mod somewhere and I know how distressing it can be if it happens too often.

We've done it before. We even made it into a local paper in New Zealand because we had to blanbket ban an entire ISP since we didn't get a response from them and the problem kept getting worse. They had a few dozen angry customers, and as a result, they promptly blacklisted the spammer. To my knowledge, no New Zealand ISP will carry him to this day.

Suicide by mod is something I generally don't agree with. When it is done by respected posters, it ruins peoples memories of them and respect for them. Not only this, but it is usually exceptionally poorly done. Anyone remember Roach-Busters tactic?

While entertaining not only are you putting a higher workload on a mod but you are potentialy setting them up to be a bad guy in the future "oh you know he was deleted by the mods ... dont remember what for but he was a nice guy when active posting so I am sure the mods are being unfair again"

Not something I want to do to our mods

Anyway My point is that Some people are so Addicted to the game they can't I repeat can't quit on their own and some of them go suicide by mod....

I wonder if you ask a mod to lock you out would they? lol....

I actually understand the idea. I played a writing RPG for three years. I was so addicted and so caught up in it the only alternative was to level the whole thing. Not exactly "suicide by mod" but "mod who commited suicide by leveling the game"

I do understand the tactic and some people can truly get addicted to RPGs to the point the only way to get out is to force themselves out so they can never play again.

Not the best of ideas...but if you're so addicted to the game it is ruining your life you have to weight that into the equation...more work for mods + more trouble all to save someone's real life? In my opinion I think it's worth it. Though asking the mods to ban you before causing trouble to get "suicided" might be better...

Quite. We should all bear in mind that our mods are not paid to do the work they do for us-- they volunteer their services, and it isn't really on to make unnecessary and unpleasant work for them.

I haven't had any problems with mods, but I have noted that some threads were locked and other posters were temporarily banned for very trivial reasons, so I can understand why some people might want to rage against the machine and go out in a blaze of glory.

P.S. I've also noticed that mod intervention does at times tend to demonstrate a cultural bias.

Almost every mod is about as fair as they can be. They have memories though and they tend to punish you based upon your history so It may seem that they were being really harsh on someone thats probably because he was a chronic rule breaker....

I've rarly met a mod that abused their mod-isms By rarly I mean never, But I suppose it does happen, I can't be everywhere, Although I tried once, It really really hurt...

I reckon all moderated online games (as we do with the Hall of Ex Nations on the wiki) should have logs of Suicide by Mods and we should publish books on them. Not only would it further embarrass the misbehavours, it would be a quality read, I dare say on par with the Darwin Awards series. Perhaps, to use a stereotype, "1337er".

However, if you ask a moderator to be deleted, I'm sure most would comply as long as it's a polite request, and you go out with honour (assuming you didn't lose it beforehand) and dignity instead of being paraded as a fool.

I actually understand the idea. I played a writing RPG for three years. I was so addicted and so caught up in it the only alternative was to level the whole thing. Not exactly "suicide by mod" but "mod who commited suicide by leveling the game"

I never realised there was such a dark underworld to RPGs - I could understand the addiction somewhat, and I wouldn't have deemed it impossible if I'd thought about it. Hells, I'm not completely naive, but that's pretty insightful to me as an occasional player rather than big on the scene. Thanks for that.

It was quite the disasterbacle. The serial spammer posted obscene pictures in great numbers, but the mods were unable to get an IP ban because of his ISP. [violet] attempted to get the ISP to block the spammer's access to NS, but they were very slow and apathetic, so Max threatened the widespread blocking of all the ISPs IP handles, and I believe they started doing such. A lot of the ISPs customers became very angry with this development (including Monkeypimp :)), and it eventually hit the newspapers. Eventually, the ISP got its act together and blocked the guy, and the last I recall, were pursuing legal action. No other New Zealand ISP will touch the guy because of all the chaos surrounding him.

His original ISP was dial up, if I recall. Hence the problems the mods were having with an IP ban. But I may be incorrect.

Once 'Staggering drunks' spam-flamed the Moderation forum in an effort to get banned, out of remorse that a personal thing he had done had caused some other people to leave of their own volition. He trolled every possible minority, flamed all the mods, and posted lots of spam and swear words. And all he got was a not-so-friendly warning from Frisbeeteria telling him to cut out the silliness. What the fuck?

Well again that seems to be a history thing, Frisbeeteria knew he didn't always flame so he just told him to quit it, and Staggering Drunks did quit it. If he really really wanted to be banned he would'ev kept doing it.....

Truth be told, Mods wont honor a request to delete a nation. We did, but too many times those players would come back wanting their nation back. So now the general policy is that if you dont want your nation, simply dont log in for 30 days.

Along those same lines, the Mods dont always delete nations attempting to commit suicide. Some nations, yes. Others that have gained much respect on the forums, no. Usually a forum-ban will occur before a DEAT.

I think TG was saying that his current policy is to scramble the offender's password and set the nation to vacation mode so it dies a slow, lingering, undignified death. :D

Nah, in all seriousness, you will not meet a more fair person than Max Barry. He lets people subscribe to anything they believe and vocalize it (in text). Whether he agrees with it or not. The only thing is he will not tolerate swastika flags. Now, I don't know if it's changed since I was a mod, but people were allowed to use the symbol on the forum to discuss/debate a point. However couldn't have it for their flag because it couldn't be discussed or debated.

Although as I said, the rational behind it may of changed. So please don't take my word for it. Check with an acting mod for sure. I haven't been a mod since Nov/04 and a lot of the rules have changed since then. But Max Barry is a very open-minded guy. I doubt that has changed.
