If there is one thing I hate...

it's BBQ's. I'm a vegetarian because I don't like the taste of meat or fish and therefore I don't like meat substitutes either, or Quorn. So, this becomes a nightmare. Salads become very boring, what one earth can I eat? I also hate most sauces, mayonaise and coleslaw.

Also my family seem to like chocolate in bananas, the chocolate is fine but the bananas, ugh. Any ideas on what to replace this with?

But there are many different veggies and lots of non-meat item's and many different ways to cook them, such as.. Fried Squash, okra, beans, grilled pineapple, coconut, fruit fresh or dried. Throw all the above in skillet with some chicken and eat soup.

I think the suggestion to get a recipe book is right on. There are sooo many good book to choose from. Also for salads you should look into raw food recipe books. I have a couple of them and they are awesome. Do you like indian food? Some of the best vegetarian food in the world. It sounds like you have not been a vegetarian for long... that or you just haven't been looking for alternatives hard enough. It's wierd, but for me, I was unhealthily skinny as a omnivore and only began gaining weight and looking healthy after I gave up meat. I don't knwo why exactly. I hear that some people fair better healthwise as vegetarians and some better as omnivores.

In your case, it's most likely because as a veg, you have to be more concious about what you eat to make sure you get enough of the proteins and vitamins, etc that omnis don't have to worry about because they get it from meat.

However, I ask that of the Original Poster because s/he in addition to not liking meat (simply for the taste...) also has listed other things s/he does not like, simply for the taste (and the list is probably longer)...and picky children (not that the OP is a child) are usually really skinny. I was a picky eater when I was younger...

First off, let me say that I used to HATE vegetarians. But I'm growing as a person, so even though it's totally freakin mindblowing that someone would not eat meat, I've learned not to judge. I have to ask this in order to answer you. WHAT DO YOU LIKE? Make a list of foods you like, and I'll tell ya how to cook it! I'm a kitchen whiz!

By the way, Sumamba, a lot of vegetarians (maybe you, maybe not) tend to eat pastas and breads, carbohydrates, etc. (the things adkins cult members can't eat). Carbs give you a lot of energy, but it's relatively short-lasting (not as bad as sugar, but similar too), whereas proteins in meat give you energy spread out over a longer period. Which basically means, you'll be hungry again quicker if you just had pasta...
Sumamba Buwhan
16-07-2005, 20:56
Actually even as am omnivore I was conscious about eating healthy (which is the main reason I went vegetarian) and I ate copious amounts of meat (free range organic) and veggies and pasta and bread. I can put it away I tell ya.

As a vegetarian though I have cut down on the carbs because I was worried about going overboard on them.

You don't have any religious or moral problems with meat, you just don't like it. You also don't eat this other stuff simply because you don't like it. You're just picky, so really, stop whining.

I doubt anybody is forcing you to eat what's there, so take matters into your own hands and either don't go, or make sure there will be some stuff you can eat.

Salads become very boring, what one earth can I eat? I also hate most sauces, mayonaise and coleslaw.I'm a vegan who doesn't like lettuce or tomatoes, so I know what it's like to have limited choice. I feel your pain. Also, the only condment I can tolerate is ketchup (vegan! yay). I'm a picky eater to say the least, but I and everyone I have ever served them to, vegetarian or not, has loved millet burgers.
They are patty shaped, but don't really taste like meat. Lentils make me gag, but I've heard that they make good patties too.
Overcook the millet (it should be very soft, but not too wet, you know) then add the classic vegan flavourings (soy sauce, ketchup, marmite or vegemite and nutritional yeast etc) to taste. If you use some red and some brown or black things, they start to look like meat. Use an egg or two to make it stick better if you're not vegan. They'll hold together better when you cook them.
Shape them into patties and freeze them in a single layer on cookie sheets. Put them in bags after theyre frozen through. They need to be frozen or they crumble on the grill.
This is as non-offensive as food gets, trust me. Portobello mushroom caps and eggplant slices are also good, brushed w oil and grilled (the mushrooms can sub in for burgers). Apparently, mesquite cactus tastes meaty, though I've never tried it. You might not like it, but then again, you just might.
Have fun.

Which basically means, you'll be hungry again quicker if you just had pasta...Not true. "Carbs" as you call them, or rather foods with high amounts of carbohydrates, also have protein, and whole wheat products provide sustained energy. Protein deficiency is very hard to develop in the western world, considering that everything but oil and sugar has protein. Vegetables have more protein per calorie than meat. Excess protein, on the other hand, which often accompanies the high calorie, high fat diet of the western world, needs a lot of calcium to leave your body. In other words, it leaches calcium from your bones.
I don't care what you eat, but stop criticizing vegetarians, who can be perfectly healthy, and are, in fact, more likely to be so than your average meat eater.

Corn on the cob, as some have said, is pretty good on a grill.

I also suggest making a meatless shish-kebab: onion chunks, tomato chunks, green pepper chunks -- maybe even some pineapple if you like it -- skewered and grilled on the BBQ.

Eggplant steaks brushed with olive oil, or portobello mushroom caps treated the same, are delicious AND can be served on a bun.

And there is nothing I like better than a sweet potato roasted in tin foil, esp. if you've split it and put butter and a bit of cinnamon into it.

And if you put it into a tin, you can heat beans and rice on the top shelf of the grill. ;)

I just have three small peices of advice:

1. Google is your friend. There are tons of sites dealing with this. Some are very very good. That's what I usually do when I need advice or fresh ideas (I'm vegan).

2. Buy some cookbooks.

3. Take a hint from your sorroundings. I'm loathe to agree with the - usually incredibly hateful - omnivores, but I think they have a point this time. You bitch & moan, but do you actually do anything to solve your problem? Don't expect your friends to cook for you. Like it or not, you're a pain for your sorroundings. Either they try to cook for you and do twice the work (and usually end up with something you can't/won't eat), or you make it clear that you'll take care of your own shit.
Don't expect people to know/relate/care/whatever. You'll just be a pain in the ass. I mean, I don't make meatloaf when I have people over. And I'd be plenty pissed if they expected me to.

Yes I realise I'm a picky eater, alays have been, but you can't change that! And no, I'm not really really skinny either, I'm 5ft2 and around 10 stone although that fluctuates.

What do I eat: pasta, couscous, rice, noodles, white or half/half bread, beans, lentils, dairy products (cheese, milk, egg, yoghurt...), most vegetables apart from brussel sprouts, and most fruits except pears, chocolate, sweets, crisps, pizza... so I'm normally fine, it's just BBQ's

Yes! but I obviously can't when I have to, now can I ? Whining? well if that's what you call asking... well if I could make my own food that could be cooked however I liked, would I be here? I'm trying to find out what I could make myself. Eating later? Nope, not a choice. Where did I say I was a martyr? Don't you think you are whining too?

You slice a banana open lengthways, put pieces of chocolate inside, close it up, wrap in foil, BBQ and then eat.

Mushroom Puffs/ Mushroom Pie

This recipe can be made in three ways – as puff pastry (the most time consuming), in pre-made fillo dough cups (easiest to handle for hors d’oeuvres at a party), or my favorite, in a frozen pie shell. For the pie, get a deep-dish pie shell and double the recipe for the filling.

Filling (for pie, double)
1/2 pound mushrooms, minced
1 minced large onion
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon thyme
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup sour cream

Pastry (optional)
9 ounces cream cheese
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cup flour

Mix and chill overnight.
Or – use pre-made Fillo Dough Cups

Sauté mushrooms and onions until soft. Add the spices and flour and sauté for another two minutes. Add the sour cream and cool slightly.

Puff Pastry -- Optional : Roll out the pastry and cut into 2 inch circles. Place a small amount of mushroom filling on each circle. Fold and crimp the edges together. Place on a baking sheet and brush the puffs with beaten egg. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Mushroom Pie:
Eliminate the pastry step. Buy a deep dish frozen pie shell, double the recipe for the filling, fill and bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until shell is golden brown. (The filling doesn’t expand when heated, so fill it right to the top.) I like to make it a two-shell pie by thawing a second frozen pie shell, trimming it and crimping it over the top of the filling, and cutting vents in the top shell. Then I brush it with beaten egg before baking, which adds a nice, shiny glazed finish to the top crust. You might have to cover the edges of the shell with aluminum foil to keep them from becoming too dark – so keep an eye on it!

I have been know to get a little silly, but I'am a pretty good cook too, and I know many meat and non-meat dishes you might try.

For grill: Take some foil and brush with olive oil...slice potatoes, onions, caroot, bell pepper/green,yellow or red to add color and taste, mushroom or any veggies you like. add seasonings such as Fajita or paprika ect.. Wrap veggies with foil and put directly on hot coals 20 minutes each side or in an oven at 450 for an hour. These are called HoBo Dinners and anything goes in them you like. Split open the foil and serve.

But lightly grilled eggplant, zuchini & sweet potatoes are excellent!!
Peel only the sweet potaotes- Just slice them all into rounds-light drizzle of olive oil to coat, salt & pepper, then grill. Its really good!!

Barbecue Beans are another favorite-simmered, add a little mustard & good BBQ sauce for some extra flavor.
