So how long do you think it will be before he retires? I'll give him six moths max.

You have a very macabre sense of "humor." :(

Have you seen the guy lately? He looks like he's a million years old. The walking dead! It's not "macabre" I just suffer from an extreme sense of reality.

I think he’s sticking around because he wants to write at least ONE majority opinion on a big time legal precedent...

And I for one, hope he gets the chance, his opinions show remarkably consistent methodology.

See, here's the problem; Alot of otherwise fine judges have gotten old and senile and made crucial decissions.

He's been extremely ill--throat cancer I believe. When I heard, I expected him to step down earlier.

But then I read somewhere that if he serves another year, he'll be the longest serving Chief Justice ever, and the history of the court--and his place in it--is very important to him. His ego will probably keep him alive for another year if nothing else will, and he'll stay on the court until he has the record at least.

True, but I don't think senility has hit Rehnquist. His fatigue might be a problem, but I think he's still got all his marbles.

I wonder if Bush asked him to not retire, I'm not going to 'overly' speculate why, but perhaps he only wants one good fight at a time (getting a nominee through the senate)...

Actually, just typing that made me think of a reason why. What if the opposing side spends ALL of their money advertising against some semi-hard conservative lady or Hispanic and gets approved anyway because too many people are afraid of opposing a minority nominee, it will be held against a Democrat running for re-election. THEN, Rehnquist retires immediately afterwards and Bush nominates some full-bore conservative and the opposing side has no money to fight with left!
 :p
