TSR tried to copywrite the word "Nazi" in its Raiders of the Lost Ark game years ago. I am sure some judge will laugh and toss McDonald's case out on its ear.
Besides, I DEFY them to prevent anyone from Asia or of Asian descent making that statement -- it will be so diluted the copyright won't hold. You know -- like the fact that actylsalicylic acid is the scientific name for aspirin... which originally was the brand name patented by Bayer.
So many people used aspirin to describe that particular drug that the word has become public domain... this is why Xerox fights to make sure you ask for a photocopy and Band-Aid fights to make sure you ask for a plastic bandage, and Kleenex fights to make sure you are asking for a facial tissue in stories, movies, etc. UNLESS you secure their permission first.
Oh, dear god. Is that site actually serious, or is it just an excellent piece of satire? It's getting so hard to tell, these days. I tell you, everyone criticises the Campbells for Glencoe, but I think they were on to something. Plus, soup is better than arteriosclerosis-in-a-bun any day.

Well it sure as hell won't be "I-am-Jewish". They'd pit themselves against too many good laywers in that case ;)

So what will asian people have to say if anyone asks what ethnic group they belong to?

That takes guts. To trademark an entire ethnicity, so to speak......I mean, part of me fears it's going to fall to some poor Asian-Americans saying it (possibly in semi-broken English) and Ronald McDonald shuffling up, clearing his throat quite conspicuously, and forcing them to pay up......okay, I admit, it's more like part of me WISHES that would happen.

And yay, the world was crushed underfoot by the Athiests and the God Worshippers, by the Left and by the Right. By the Moral and the Immoral. Eleven days and Eleven nights did pass. And lo, a giant "M" did arise from the the debris, and lo did a burning clown emerge from the "M" and say unto the the gathering crowd "Why do you all worship the Christ-God, yet resemble Budda?", And yay, there was much wailing of fat children and rotting of teeth.

I think the best part is the really fat pug-dog they show wearing the T-shirt, its like they want to anger Asians enough to invent a new form of Jihad. The spastic shaking of the text on the menus is also great, you can almost picture the executives talking.....
Exec: "I was thinking, little asian kids are totally spastic, so lets make our menu spaz out; they'll totally flip out and click it!"
Ronald: "This whole plan makes me nervous, I mean, am I going to have to say 'I-am-Asian'?"
Exec: "If you want to keep your job, and your legs, yes."
Exec 2: "Cheer up Ron, look, your facepaint kinda looks like Kabuki!"
Ronald: *shoots self in head, rainbows and cholesterol clots spray across the room*
Exec: "Quick, get the demographics on sad clowns, I've got our next big thing; I-am-clown-suicide....."

Unless the ANP decides to copyright it.

Shoot, I better get that copyright on "I-am-Mexican!" before someone else does.
*runs to copyright office*
I´m safe though. I don´t think they´ll copyright "I-am-north-european-and-freeze-my-BLEEP-off-every-BLEEP-winter!"

What a load of shit. They can't do anything if someone violates the trademark, the Judge would laugh them out of court.

I think my favorite part about this whole thread is the thread title taken in conjunction with this here first post: particularaly amusing to me is the implication that this remarkably hair-brained move reflects accurately on the entirety of capitalism. Next time you're going to try and denounce a political ideology or an economic system, you'll do well to actually back up your assertations with [gasp!] more than one example, preferably examples that aren't one-in-a-million, crazy-ass stupid bullshit things like this.
Claiming that McDonalds trademarking this phrase makes for a legitimate endictmnt of capitalism is absurd.

I think he meant it for how absurd the current systems of copyrights (TM) are. Not a general critique of capitalism. Besides, you do know that this entire game is by a man who writes satires of capitalist absurdity.

Still, I was expecting some sort of thesis and got a little disappointed. It happens, I guess.

We're Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and our diverse cultures and our everyday American lifestyle are becoming one. We're hanging on to our great traditions while we move to the beat of the times. We honor our heritage and we love being Americans. From high fashion to high tech, from Asian Pacific American hip hop to haute cuisine, we're weaving the threads of our culture into the fabric of everyday American life. Whether we're celebrating one of our cultural holidays or enjoying a Big Mac sandwich, we're helping make the magic mix called America become even richer. And McDonald's is right there with us, everyday! We are proud of our cultural heritage.
Wow...I really am concerned. Someone should do something. Seriously. Especially notice that most of the asians (who have a markedly different group of cultures from Pacific Islanders - Stupid-ass American stereotypes!! Are you (pick one): Mexican/Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, African-American, Native American, White/Caucasian, Idiotic Stereotyping Corporation. Shoot-Myself-in-the-Headian.) in the pictures on link are much more overweight than the majority of America's or Asia's asian people. McDonald's thinks they can merge a specific culture with their food?? Like that line "Whether we're celebrating one of our cultural holidays or enjoying a Big Mad sandwich..." Holy crap. What is it about all this that makes me fume? I'm a "White/Caucasian" European mutt, but I can't stand that McDonald's would have the audacity to use, much less trademark, the phrase "I am Asian" for advertising purposes. If I was an Asian, would vehemently boycott McDonalds because of this. Also, side-note, note my name - Individualnost, Russian for "Individuality." Ahem.
