[Live 8 Apoplexy] Parents Television Council - Mommies to a Nation

OMG Roger Daltrey sang FUCK. Just like he's always sung the song. For thirty years. Just like it's always been played on radio. For thirty years.

What, these pinheads only know the Who from the credits to CSI? Honestly. Why don't they just stop consuming media of any sort, lest they hear, see, or otherwise experience anything other than the sort of watered-down, bland fare one might expect from a night on the town in Branson, Missouri? And why does anyone allow these stodgy bastards to dictate what's appropriate?

Take back your media, people - or be prepared to listen to an atonal beep every time Roger belts out the question, 'Who the fuck are you?'. Is Rock and Roll about letting some uptight bunch of self-appointed mommies tell YOU what you can or cannot listen to? Is it about currying favour of people who actively seek to curtail freedoms? Is Rock and Roll to be neutered to suit the sensibilities of six-year-olds and the bizarrely selective indignation of their overbearing parents?

Say 'NO'. Say 'FUCK'. Say it as often and as loudly as you can, 'cause one day you'll be dead, and you'll have to shut up for a looong time. Do you want to walk around half-dead all the time, muzzled for life because a pack of neo-Puritan fascists think THEIR children have a greater sense of entitlement than YOU where freedom of expression is concerned?

The Parents Television Council - Who the fuck are THEY, eh Roger?

WHO the FUCK are THEY? And why haven't these clods been laughed out of the media yet?

Parents group wants fines for Live 8 swear word
Last Updated Thu, 14 Jul 2005 19:42:17 EDT
CBC Arts

A parents group is demanding the ABC network be fined for violating broadcast standards because it failed to censor a swear word expressed during the recent Live 8 concert.

The Parents Television Council, founded in 1995, has asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to levy a fine because of the July 2 performance of Who Are You by The Who.

"The program was aired on tape delay, which should have given ABC ample time to edit all obscenities from the concert prior to broadcast," said Tim Winter, the executive director of the council, in a statement.

The council is a non-partisan organization with one million members and acts as a watchdog against sex, violence and profanity in the media.

Specifically, the line in question is the lyric "who the f**k are you?"

The Live 8 concerts, featuring well-known music stars such as Madonna, Pink Floyd, REM, U2 and Barenaked Ladies, were held simultaneously in London, Tokyo, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Barrie, Ont., Johannesburg and Philadelphia to draw attention to poverty in poor countries.

The group filed an official complaint against the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C., WJLA, but has asked the commission to take action against all ABC stations.

U.S. law bars broadcasters from airing obscene material and they are limited to airing explicit content late at night.

The council points out the FCC issued a warning in March 2004, saying the use of the F-word on television was indecent and that broadcasters would face "potential licence revocation."

"Unfortunately, one inappropriate phrase sung by one performer was initially missed and made it into the East Coast network," said ABC in a news release. The network says that part was subsequently edited out of the West Coast feed.

This is not the first time a rocker has landed a network in hot water. The FCC issued a condemnation against NBC when U2 frontman Bono swore during the 2003 Golden Globe Awards, but it did not impose any fines.

Perhaps it would be better if we just went ahead and banned ABC entirely. Perhaps just post a huge fine on ABC and let the whole company go under. Throw the people responsible in jail, let everyone see just what happens when you fail in your duty to keep the airwaves child-friendly.

Let people see first hand what the price for censorship of speech is: silence.

Perhaps then, cooler heads will prevail.

This is the kind of nonsense that happens when people unconnected to an industry try to regulate. Let the networks regulate themselves. If they did, ABC could then weigh the pros and cons of allowing objectionable material on their programming. Most likely, in this situation, they would have looked at the concert lineup, and decided that the outrage from one F bomb being dropped does not override the money to be made from airing the Who.

Anyway, I’m sure these uptight media fascists were just watching because they knew it was a live event, and they wanted to see if anyone screwed up.

Snoop Dogg was great, where else are you gonna hear...

"Put you motherfuckin hands up"

on the BBC at 5pm on a Saturday! :D

However, the greatest interview with a swear word...

Slash on ITV 9am childrens programme, talking about his pet Iguana:

Slash: "So I put my hand in the cage, then the little bastard comes up and bits my fucking finger off"

Kat Deely (bubble gum presenter):

5 mins later...

Dec (former boyband member turned presenter): "We're sorry if any of our viewers found Slash's comments inappropriate..."

Except the Who didn't screw up - they sang it they way it's supposed to be. The only ones screwing up were the PTC, who should have known better.

Hello, the song has been playing on 'Classic Rock' radio for thirty years - since it was called 'Adult Contemporary' radio. When did they stop listening to music?

1962?

What would they have thought of Geldof in Live aid then.

"GIVE US YOU FUCKING MONEY, WE WANT YOUR FUCKING CASH!" The fact si that there no problem with swearing, IT'S A GOD DAMMED SONG FOR CHRIST SAKE! IT'S ROCK AND FUCKING ROLL TAKE ITAS ematloaf said, "Daddy you've got a hell of a lot to learn about Rock 'n' Roll.

When did they stop listening to decent music? These are the people that are sending music, decent music that is, down the drain by not buying anything with a perental warning sticker on it (Which shouldn't be there in my view) and buying there kids smash hits and only buying some kiddy song (Most modern pop) so there kids won't be 'corrupted'. Let your kids listen to bloody m&m and green Day, they challange Authority and provide a important political ideas. let them listen to the Sex Pistols and MEatloaf. Listen to The Jam when there around and turn up your sterio to full volume for The Who.

Thats the only way to beat these bastards.

This is pathetic. >_<

I doubt many young children were even watching the concert to begin with; and besides...isn't it inevitable that they'll learn that the word "fuck" exists someday anyway?

Just more politics; they'll try to play the victim and probably sue a few times. You'd think they knew about it given the fact that the song's been around 40 or so years.

"The council is a non-partisan organization with one million members and acts as a watchdog against sex, violence and profanity in the media.

Specifically, the line in question is the lyric "who the f**k are you?" "

Come on! Fuck isn't even being used in its sexual sense anyway; it's pretty much a meaningless word used for emphaisis. These people need real jobs instead of running around telling me what is "acceptable".

Not like the kids won't hear it in a couple years (I think I learned it in grade school :p ), and probably already have at home.

You can't bleep out live TV. It's not the first time someone's sworn on live TV, and it won't be the last. In the grand scheme of things, is it really such a big issue?

Perhaps we should hand out "explicit content" stickers for people to stick on their TV's... ;)

Anyway, I’m sure these uptight media fascists were just watching because they knew it was a live event, and they wanted to see if anyone screwed up.

Yeah, they always do, even in this country.
And it's usually some whining old BAT stuck out in the
wop-wops.
Maybe a religious type, maybe not.
For some reason, they seem to be awake at JUST the right time and/or
perusing JUST the right channel (no matter WHEN whatever show's
on) so that they can take down the details of whatever the offending
thing may be.

They're usually the sort of people who write in to the Editorials moaning
about "how things aren't like they were in the good old days"
or "How anything that challenges conservative views even
REMOTELY somehow or other equates to COMMUNISM".

Their minds seem to go something like this when they perceive something
that goes against everything that they believe in:
Step 1: (subliminal/psychological): Merrrhhh! Moi moind won't accept this!
Step 2: (reasoning) : ??????????
Step 3: (conclusion drawn from reasoning) : "It must be those pesky
LIBERALS/COMMUNISTS again! (I don't know how, but they're the
same in the
minds of these people. They often draw this conclusion
SOMEHOW). Whatever they're planning is against God and Reason,
and must be stopped, because it's different from how I think and
by gum, we're gonna STOP them!"
Step 4: (Action taken): COMPLAIN!:
- BITCH and MOAN at the top of their lungs
- Write a PATHETIC WHINGEING Letter to the Editor to
whatever newspaper or other publication that may be around.
- Keel over from a heart attack in whatever rest home they're
rotting in, because they just saw a girl who was wearing
clothes that showed off her ANKLES.

Either that, or it'll be some poor, bored housewife who, with nothing
better to do, decides to complain at (not TO but AT) someone, because
they want to know "why doesn't anyone THANK of THUH CHALD'RUN?".
The mental process goes similarly to the example above.

My two cents on music censorship.

I prefer the way the Canada does it, when music actually is censored (which is not all the time). One sound or syllable is removed from the swear, but the music is not interfered with, and the flow of words is not interrupted. Whenever a station plays an American radio show (usually the Top 40 or something like it), we hear the American version of censoring, and it's really annoying. They scramble the offensive words (not just swears, anything referring to drugs, even sexual innuendos, so some songs end up sounding like complete gibberish. We generally ONLY edit the harsh swear words.) It makes the music very stop and go...in hip hop songs especially the effect is horrid. When they don't use the scramble, they edit the complete word...so you have some sentences so full of holes you can't possibly make sense of them. What is the point of this type of heavy censorship? What do you yanks think about it?

Swearing in music or on tv hardly bothers me. If it's a show that is extreme, I don't watch it with my kids. If it's a swear in a song during a live feed...

...trust me, my kids have heard those words before. Often. And I grew up listening to Frank Zappa. Not an issue.

<EXTREME sacasm> Oh dear...gosh no. They most certainly cannot learn that darned word; it might give them ideas that we believe that are going to make them into little violent, child-molesting homosexuals! We must cenosr that word! </EXTREME sarcasm>

Geeze, what utter nonsense is this huh! Wow!

You know, if the worse thing my kids ever do is learn to swear or find out at an early age what a tit looks like, I will be a very happy mother. What the hell is wrong with these people? Maybe they should just raise their children in a bubble! Idiots all of them!

People are so fucking retarded.
I love how violence is ok for kids to watch, yet nudity (Janet Jackson at the Superbowl) or a "swear word" in a classic song are these terrible fucking things.

Man, I can't wait until I have kids. Their mouths will be so foul these parents will piss themselves.

I'm kinda amused that it was Roger Daltrey and not Billy-Joe Armstrong that ended up being the one cursing. I was just sure that someone else would start bitching about the use of "Mindfuck America." in American Idiot. It's not like Mainstream America hasn't done it before.

OH NOES! THE CURSEWORDS! How horrid! I'm melting!

In other news, following the spontanious melting of a number of American citizens, the average American's IQ rose 50 points.

The problem is that we censor our media! We shouldn't censor it, we deserve to see everything as it is, no matter what it is. The problem isn't the media it's these fucking whiney ass parents who think that we should live in happy friggin fairy land our entire dam lives! To bad for them the world isn't like that and never will be. So he said FUCK. Woopedy fuckin' doo. Do they really think all their poor little babies will become psycho killers now that they heard the word fuck? These people are ridicoulous. The media has to much censorship. Eventually the only thing on TV will be baby cartoons and static.

I know I'd prefer seeing and hearing people using expletives and/or exposing parts of their bodies, rather than watch people beat each other to death.

Why is truly excessive violence never the call to action, but monosyllabic curse-words and errant nipples always seem to be?

Why does the PTC ignore the 'off' switch option, and instead try to ruin everybody elses' good times?

Awwwww, FUCK! I was gonna start a thread on this, having just rerad the same article. My response to people like that is to tell them they should get a life rather than tell others how to live theirs.

In Canada, swearing isn't censored between 9PM and 6AM on TV and Radio. When Muchmusic was showing The Osbournes, we could hear OIzzy speaking in all his foul mouthed fucking glory. I completely fail to see how a swear word is going to do any harm to anyone except the mental midgets who complain about it but are too stupid to change the channel. Fucktards and misplaced cumshots, the lot of them.

In Canada we have a hit show called 'Trailer Park Boys' wherein every fourth or fifth word is some form of swearing. Apparently it's been picked up on American cable or satellite providers, but atonal bleeps abound.

I know this show well, I've watched it for a few years. I can't help but think I'd go insane from all the bleeping watching it a la Americain would necessarily entail.

I mean, never to hear Jim Leahy properly describe what a 'shit-hawk', a 'shit-leopard' or a 'shit-quake' is? Never to know that Bubbles is properly known as 'The Green Bastard' in the wrestling ring? And missing out on Ricky's short speech to the film crew about taking a trip to 'fuck-off-ety land'?

Pointless.
