Thoughts about tattoos...

With the premiere of Miami Ink (http://miami-ink.com/) on TLC (on Tuesday...I think) and the general rising popularity of tattoos...I was wondering what the general conseusus of NS was about tattoos.

Personally, I love tattoos. I have one at the moment, but will be buying more as soon as I can afford them. Here's a photo:

http://armageddonproject.com/images/personal/mytattoo.jpg

(I don't think it's out of bounds...but as a note to the mods: if you think it's too racy for the boards, please delete the photo.)

Here's a few more I've drawn up and might get in the future:

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/11575939/

My philosophy on tattoos is somewhat cynical, but it works for me: to me, I love the permanancy of tattoos. Lovers leave, people die, wealth comes and goes...but your ink stays with you forever. It may fade a little over time, but if you take care of it, it lasts until you die...just like a good marriage.

Also, as a Christian, I've gotten flak from a lot of fundamentalists that are against tattoos for scriptural reasons (the whole "defiling the vessel/temple" argument), though I don't see tattoos as defiling my body. I see it as decorating my body. Think of it as "curb appeal" for my temple. ;)

ANYway. What are your thoughts on tattoos? Feel free to post your own ideas and/or photos of your own tattoos.

I think most people that get them are morons, unless they can afford to have them removed down the road when they have wrinkly, old-people skin and look like an ass.

Those henna (or whatever the fuck they're called) tattoos seem to be the way to go if you want to look cool and not look like an ass, but I'm no tattoo expert.

I think the best idea for a tattoo was this one girl who got F-holes (I think that's what they're called) tattooed on her back.

She looked like a violin.

I've contemplated some tattoos... I've been thinking about getting either the constellation scorpius or ursa minor (the former is my astrological sign, the latter is used to indicate north and since there isn't too much further north than Canada... et c) or perhaps a small maple leaf on my back.

Either that or a crescent moon on my hip facing my belly button... though that one wouldn't be until after I have kids and such... I don't really want a horribly stretched thing...

I don't own a digicam, so I can't take any pictures. But I have a few. All over really :)
I love them. I try to get a bew one each time I go somewhere I've never been before. My reasons are no different from yours. Most of my tatoos are of a very different style though (yes I have all the clasic barbwire & norse mythos shit).

Got one in Rantoul, Illinois in 1961 or 1962. Upper left arm. Eagle carrying a bomb in its talons. If you want one, go for it.

Tattoos are the norm these days. You wanna be edgy, you stay ink-free. I'm ink-free. Of course, that's more due to my overriding fear of needles than any desire to be edgy...

I want to get one that says "Made in Canada" in tiny letters. I don't know where I'm going to put it...
I love all of Angelina's tattoos, and hope to have an equally impressive collection someday, but for now, I'm not in a rush. I'll wait until I have something with special meaning to me that I just have to get inked.

Nope... I'm very into black art. I love the black on white skin contrast and have a love for tribal art. Also, black is easier to touch up. ;)

i think the general consensus here is that a tattoo should be something you'll be able to stand having under your skin for the entire rest of your life, and i heartily agree.

i'm only 16, but i'd really like to get a tattoo of something meaningful to me when i am of age. i'm thinking about a blooming lotus on my upper back, near my shoulder, as a symbol of buddhism and rebirth, or a small phoenix flying across my abdomen or up my back to represent the same things. i'll probably have to get them somewhere easy to hide, b/c I act as well, I have to be careful about making any changes to I body that would limit my casting range, esp. permanent ones, which is why i think if i do ink i'll try and do it in inconspicuous places. ;)

i'm biracial and so have somewhat cinnamin coloured skin, i'm wondering how this would affect how colour shows up on my skin.

You'll probaly have to be under the needle longer, depending on your skin "thickness". Darker skins tend to (obviously) not show darker inks as well.

I have very white skin (damn Irish), so tattoos tend to show up better... but I have REALLY thick skin, so ink tends not to "take" as well as it would on other people.

The tattoo in the picture took 45 minutes to ink and even then it was spotty. About 3 years later I had it totally "re-blacked" and even that took an hour and a half...and was STILL spotty. The artist had to set the needle extra deep just to get the ink to take semi-evenly.

I have this (http://www.scc.losrios.edu/~myerst/hands.jpg) tattooed on my upper left arm. I love it and really enjoyed getting it. Its about 8 years old now and in need of a retouch (fine line work fades faster). 99.99% of the people who see it thinks its a really nice tattoo, even if they aren't into tattoos. I'm an artist, with a lot of my work invovlving patterns and cyclical motifs, and much of it in fine line/pen & ink crosshatching style, so the image says something about me, my aesthetic and my philosophy. Every so often someone will look at it and say "I don't get it." Anyone dense enough not to get it isn't worth bothering with, so it also acts as an idiot filter.

I really want to get more, but my money was too tight for many years. Now that I can afford it, I'm not sure what to get. One of my criteria is that it can't be something I'll regret or look stupid with if/when I'm 80 years old. I want to get one of a griffon done in the ancient German style (somewhat similar to the Scandinavian/Viking style) but I can't find enough decent refference images to design it.

I've very seriously thought of getting one of the ID tag image from the weird 60s series, the prisoner...a Pennyfarthing bike, with the prisoners number in the middle of the large wheel. Instead of 66 or whatever , I'd have the numeral 1. (warden:"I am number 2." - the prisoner: "Who is number one?" - the warden "That is irrelalvent!") But I'm afraid almost nobody would get it...its just too obscure.

I think if you want more, go for it. Get some fine line work...it feels awesome.

I've been wanting a tatoo for several years, and know exactly what im getting, however, just when i was able to get it, crisis seriously limited my money supply so by tatto was one of the first things scrapped.

I think tatoos, when meaningful, are an expression about the person. However, it really irritates me when people have them just for having one, but then again those are the people shellingout serious money to have them removed later on.

I have a rune tattooed on the back of my neck. When people ask me "what does your tattoo mean?" I tell them "It is a rune that means YOU MUST BE AT LEAST THIS TALL TO GET ON THE RIDE".

It's probably a good thing I can't afford to get a lot of tattoos, because it feels SOOOOO GOOOOD, I would have them all over by now just for the pleasure of going under the needle.

I've got this little seahorse (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b24/cabrawest/.Tattoo.jpg) on my left leg. I got it about three months ago, when I was finally free enough to do it and had the money to pay for it, too.

My mother was generally very liberal, except where tattoos where concerned. When I was about 16, she sat me and my brothers down at the ktichen table and told us "Kids, you can pierce anything you want, you can dye anything you want and you can shave off anything you want. But if one of you should ever come home with a tattoo, you can kiss your pocket money good bye"
Well, we all got piercings, we all had strange and colourful hairstyles at one time or another, but I had that thought about getting a tattoo as soon as I could afford one for a long time now. I've been out of the house a while, and off pocket money even longer, but so far I didn't have the time or the money to get one.

Well, I've got it now. I think the leg is a good spot, because I can hide it if I want (my mom still doesn't know about it ;) ) and show it if I want. And I can see it myself, I never understood why people would get tattoos that they themselves can't see...

I know a lot of veterans that would kick the living shit out of someone for spouting such nonsense.

Regardless, tats don't necessarily look bad on old people. It is a matter of being selective in what you get tatooed on you.

Your problem appears to be a problem with people getting old and wrinkly, not something inherent about tatoos. Guess what, if you live long enough, you'll get "wrinkly, old-people skin" anyway.

Well this thread was enough for me to actually throw my hat into the ring. Yay for first posts!

I have two tattoos, and I adore them. My first is an anhk on my lower back (the bitch spot), and the newest is approximately between my shoulder blades, maybe a bit higher. Someone mentioned earlier about having tattoos where you can see them, but since my tattoos are as much about spirituality and meaning as they are about decoration, I feel good just knowing that they are there. My boyfriend also only has tattoos on his back, but that's purely for the ability to hide them.

My newest (about 4 months old) is a celtic trinity knot, NOT TAKEN FROM A BOOK. I know how horribly clichéd knotwork can be, especially on an obvious celt like myself. (Red hair, no skin pigment, lol) At any rate, it makes me feel great, and might I say it looks rather stunning when I wear a backless dress or tank top. ^_^

As for the actual feeling of BEING tattooed, there is no other feeling in the world that is such a sweet mixture of pain and pleasure at the same time. What a rush.

Ah, well, now take your medication, please.

Well, i am inked and will continue to collect some for a while. At the moment i am wondering if i should go down to the lower arms, at which point i would not be able to conceal them with a t-shirt.
Right now i have four pieces, a grafitti-style, grinning dragon over my right shoulder, a skull and scroll around the right upper arm, a catgirl pin-up on my left with a fitting motto to go with it and the four elements on my left flank, from hip to armpit. I am still looking for a good design, i want a large werewolf for my back.
Tattoos are fun to have, and when i grow older, well, i wont be that good-looking anymore anyway.

But now that you mention it, I do seem to recall Jesus addressing this -- perhaps during the Sermon on the Mount: "Blessed are those whose skin is free from artificial tint and from unnatural holes except in the ears of women; skin is sinful and only the wicked shall decorate it with other than paints and cosmetics." :D

Also, as a Christian, I've gotten flak from a lot of fundamentalists that are against tattoos for scriptural reasons (the whole "defiling the vessel/temple" argument), though I don't see tattoos as defiling my body. I see it as decorating my body. Think of it as "curb appeal" for my temple. ;)

Hey-I checked out the ones you've drawn as possibilities in the future- you're pretty talented.

I like certain tattoos- well thought out and well done. You have to think "Will this still be appropriate to me in 15 or 20 years?" I view them as permamnent, wouldnt consider having one removed. I think they should mean something and reflect somehwat on who you are and who you'll always be.

Well, I've got it now. I think the leg is a good spot, because I can hide it if I want (my mom still doesn't know about it ;) ) and show it if I want. And I can see it myself, I never understood why people would get tattoos that they themselves can't see...

I like the seahorse. I dont see how anyone could find that as offensive and you probably wont be sorry you got it in 25 years.
I see it as a good choice. And I usually like marine oriented stuff anyway.

Tattoos and body piercings are not only ugly and repulsive, but even worse they are creations of Satan.
They're the creations of tattoo artists, I think you'll find..

I have two fairly large tattoos on my left bicep, got one at 18 and the other at 20, and my left nipple was pierced at 16 with a small steel ring. The tattoos aren't of anything specific, they're kinda celtic weave patterns, I'm thinking of getting some more, but they're expensive in London..

I'm all for tattoos, but I do agree that if you go OTT they can look disgusting, especially the coloured ones.

So, to add another spin, what do people think of tattoos on the opposite sex? (Or same sex if you're that way inclined..) To reiterate, I think they can look quite attractive on girls if done tastefully, avoiding the whole biker chick thing. Although, I don't think I've ever been with a girl with a tatt. Or have I? Can't recall..

Hey-I checked out the ones you've drawn as possibilities in the future- you're pretty talented.
Thank you! :) Those were actually experiments at me getting back into drawing freehand (after not having done anything except graphic design for 10 years) and to see if I still had the skills. I'm still happy they turned out well.

Well you've certainly got the skills- its not just good artwork, but its style is also "tattoo specific " art. Nice work.

I currently have 9 tattoos, mostly dragons. The last one I got was done traditionally with a pointy stick rather than an electrical tattoo gun. I would have more but my tattooist takes a lot of money and a long time to reach (I live in London, he lives on an island in the Gulf of Thailand) and I think he's scared of the amount I bleed as the last 2 times I went to get tattooed he took the boat to Bangkok.

Let me know if you find a good, good value tattooist in London. I went up to Bugsy's in Camden, but they wanted a ridiculous amount of money for the work I wanted.

My brother got a shark tattoo done traditional way when he lived in Maui. Its really cool and I dont see it ever fading. Its a bold black outline.

I'm not too big on tattoos, but I did get one on my Johnson.

It says "Tiny"

But when he's ready for acttion in his full glory it says:

"Tiny's Bar and Grill - Chattanooga, Tennessee -open 24 hours a day - truckers welcome - phone inside".

I really really really wanted a tattoo when I was younger of one of the wild things from Where the Wild Things Are ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060254920/ref=pd_sxp_f/002-4578580-4900038?v=glance&s=books), and I was going to get it on my belly near my hip. Let me tell ya...after seeing a tatoo on a friend in the same place after her first child was born, I'm REALLY glad I didn't do it. You see...back then I swore I'd never have children, so I didn't think it was an issue. Whew!

Tattoos are okay I guess, for other people. I'm glad I don't have one. I'd get tired of the same picture I think. And my tastes change...what I would have like 10 years ago is not what I like now, nor what I would like in 20. I'll go with impermanent tattoos if I bother at all.

And be careful people. Both my father and a good friend of his who have tattoos all over their backs and arms contracted Hepatitis C from improperly sterilized equipment. Check over the parlour really well, make sure you SEE them sterilizing their gear...or buy your own set of needles if you plan on getting a lot of work done. Hep C is incurable, causes horrible liver damage, and you can pass it onto others for the rest of your life. (Dad couldn't even have his toothbrush in the same place as ours, just in case)

I've considered getting circuitboard wings tattooed on my back, but after realizing the cost (the artists I consulted told me the designs were so large and intricate that they would have to be done in phases), I kinda backed down on that one. Right now I'm looking for somewhere to get a good, dark henna so I can have a temporary version of my idea. Henna is much better for the skin anyway.

I've thought about getting a tattoo, but what I'd get and where just aren't very practical...i mean they're good in theory but I don't see em actually workin out.

IF I got one, it'd be just a simple heart, size of a quarter with a teensy black outline and pink or red inside. It'd go on my left buttcheek lmao

But overall, my thoughts on tattoos: I don't really like em, most are kinda scary to me and whatnot.

Neat on other folks, but I never had the motivation to get one.

yeah, me neither.

I should go into laser surgery... could make a whole lot of money removing tattoos from middle-age and geriatric adults. hehe

I have two, and the permanency is the important factor for me: I getthem to remind myself what I was thinking/feeling at the time that I got them. One when I graduated college to remind myself how lucky I am (dice on my arm), and another when I finished my first big professional project to remind myself to take things slow and steady (turtle on my foot).
