Thinking about a birthday present
Well, a good friend of mine has a birthday coming up soon. I have gotten crap things the last two years, as I havn't had much money. I want to make it up to her though, so I want to buy her a really nice present this year. I can't really think of anything though. Im considering something around 50-100 dollars. Any ideas?
Is she your girlfriend?
Within your price range, there's always expensive wines, crafts (trinkets, novelty clocks, picture frames, replica paintings) and cheap jewellery.

What kind of hobbies or interests does she have?

Make her something nice.
You could buy her a beautifully decorated cake, custom made to your order that reflects her interests. One of those things cost 25 Yuan in China (the customer is also welcomed to view the process of its making), which is about U.S.$5.00. Those things would probably within the $50-100 price range in the West.
How old is she? What does she like?
I would stay away from jewelry, unless you really know her tastes. Flowers are always nice, along with a gift of something else, a book or cd/dvd perhaps?
kate spade has lots of fairly inexpensive items at NM (www.neimanmarcus.com).
Themed gifts are nice too. A favourite dvd, with snacks, movie gift cards etc... are fun to get.
If she has a hobby, you might get her giftcards or a coffee table book about what she enjoys...
Its hard to know what to get someone when you don't know anything about them...heh
No, she isnt my girlfriend.
I cant really think of any specific interests...
She will be 17, that about all the insight I can give :P

Find out her favourite store to shop for clothes and get a gift certificate from there. But its gotta be her favourite...cuz it'll show you've thought about it. This way she gets something real nice, of her choice, from her fave store, as gift from you.
No, she isnt my girlfriend.
Damn! My inner White man instincts tells to suggest booking a room in some fancy hotel, or the local motel (that'll be within the $50-100 range). LOL!

Nor is she interested in me that way :P
Give her a photograph of you in your full National Guard service uniform, standing before the Stars and Stripes, preferably with rifle in hand or sidearm in view.
Hell, by the time I've joined the Army, I wouldn't hesitate to give something like that. By the way, an enlisted position would be a waste of my qualifications and talent.

If it's a birthday then go with a fancy cake. Gift vouchers aren't so bad, it'll be her choice.
Please note that food stamps are not gift vouchers!

Shit, we wish cakes costed $5 in the US, premade ones cost mroe than that, god forbid you get a custom one made. Sounds at least $50ish agreed. Buy her the harry potter collection with the newest book coming out this weekend

Funny how White people invented cakes and desserts of the like but there are more bakers and dessert chefs in China. LOL!
The Chinese classify those under Western dessert.

I'll try to include that with whatever I get her, as getting her that alone would be pretty self absorbed ^_^
Btw, one interest of hers is soccer...but I cant think of anything like that to get her.

I don't think someone in their late teens would read Harry Pothead.

There's a little bit of Hitler in all of us! Remember, they can't resist men in uniform.
Soccer, eh? You could buy an autographed ball from her favorite team, but could be hard to come by.

They don't have release parties until MIDNIGHT because only 10 year olds read the 500 page long book

If you can't think of anything material, give her an online gift certificate to Amazon.com.

I don't think that gift certificate covers freight handling costs. LOL!
If no suitable gift certificates can be mustered in time, just give food stamps. LOL!
Well, i have at least a month to decide, I'll be brainstorming with others...
Be sure to include that photo of you in uniform, it'll be better than all those women's pinups of men in their underpants, soldier!
