British (all) MultiCulturalisim under the Question.
There are have always been those of us who have opposed the Political Cult of Multi-Culturalisim. Unfortunately, no matter how generally Liberal or Libertarian we may be, we got lumped in with the crazy bigots.
But guess what, somthing we have always thought and said (before being shouted down) is finally being recognised - A "Multicultural" society is a Balkanized society. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4681615.stm
Sure, be proud of your heritage - but when people remain cultural outsiders in their own community, bad things are far more likely to happen.

The vast majority of minorities in the country integrate a great deal (certainly more than the British on the costas of Spain).
I live in Leicester and I see a multicultural society that is vibrant and exciting.
I don't see any "Balkanising". Don't mistake the actions of a Lunatic fringe with the beliefs of the majority.
When the IRA bombed London we didn't throw the Irish out and most people didn't blame them for the crimes of the few.
Let 's let people live their lives in peace and they are more likely to point the police to the guilty ones amoung them.

I think Canada's multicultural society is great, most everyone considers themselves Canadian but we get all the benefits of each of their cultures be they Indian (as in from India), French, English, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc...

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm talking about Political Multiculturalisim... the "cult" part that politically fights assimilation. The type that insists that people refer to themselves as (in the US example) Eruo-Americans or African Americans rather than just "American" (of whatever descent).
My perspective comes from being (A) being in the US military where "We're all Green" and (B) global travel.
The old saw "When in Rome..." is the single best policy for anyone to follow, whether visiting or immigrating.
A vibrant multi-ethnic community is different than a "multi-cultural" one. To be "multi-cultural" you must abandon all hope of a unified society. In a truly multicultural (vs. multi-ethnic) society, Sharia would take precidence over national law when it came to Muslims. Christians would have to be allowed to preach on the streets of Mecca. Other cultural norms (like the Hindu Caste System) would have to be accepted - and to hell with the sociatal norms of the country.
IMO a "multicultural" world would lose much of its uniqueness - and stability - because there would be no more geo/socio-cultural uniqueness. The rules of whereever you came from would apply to where you are.
By all means, we should honor and cherish a multi-ethnic society... but political multiculturalisim is very troubling.
