I'll be honest, I didn't find that joke all too funny. It fell kinda flat.

I don't really find it funny either, but I've seen enough to know that Atheist arguments of that context are pretty commonplace, the 'Embittered Atheist' stereotype has been around for a long time.

Remember Orwell in Down and Out in Paris and London:

"He was the sort of atheist who does not so much disbelieve in God as personally dislike Him."

Yeah, that cartoon expresses the true feelings of atheists. Good job genius.

Yeah, not especially funny. probably should have been aborted at its creative conception.

I think this must be something that Americans deal with more than some other places. I've never encountered any real animosity between the atheist and religious parts of society within Australia (probably because a huge portion of our society tends to dislike organised religion). In fact, faith is rarely an issue. You've got your government over one side, and your religious institutions somewhere else, and never the two shall meet.

It's about as funny as Hagar the Horrible. Ie: not really..

It's not especially funny but there's a lot of truth to it.

Though its easy to understand why. In the US it's hardly suprising that non-religious types have gotten more and more hypersensitive about christianity getting in their faces, given events here over the last few years.

I don't really see why it's easy to understand. I mean, Atheists campaign against generalization of themselves yet generalize themselves (all of them) as 'rationalists' and 'intellectuals', implying they are more rational on comparitive terms than theists or even deists. I am a bit sick of Atheists to be honest, I'm sick of being generalized as an ultra-fundamentalist Christian myself and sick of being looked down on by what is little more than a vechile for Intellectual Elitism.

I think it did have a point -- that those who wish to protect the separation of church and state sometimes take their mission too far, such as attempting to prevent any symbol and/or wording that makes reference to a particular religion from placement on government grounds (as the cartoon obviously makes reference to).

In England the atheists are left alone and actually brilliantly educated and civilised on the whole, like Douglas Adams for example. We have a lot more freedom in Britain in terms of religion... no one really cares who thinks what. 'm personally friends with a fundamentalist who believes the Earth is 12000 years old and denies the existence of dinosaurs... I disagree completely but no one actually cares to argue about it, because no one really changes their opinion on this...

True, true. The whole deal with the 10 commandments being removed was pretty silly I think. But then, after hanging out here for a month, I can appreciate where these people are comming from.
I've been an atheist all my life. I had a couple of years as a teenager, where I thought it was real clever to give people shit about their religion.. Teenagers do things like that.
But since then, I've never been treated any different, nor have I treated anyone different, because of religion or lack of it - barring the odd fanatic, but they attack everyone. Outside, in the real world, I think churches and the christian faith is an important part of our cultural inheritance. It's value is beyong measure, and I think it's very important that we recognise this. And I don't think there's any contradiction between that, and my hope that we one day will be a society of atheists.
I do not actively do anything to promote atheist or undermine religion. There's been a gradual move away from all faiths for a long time. As far as I can see, this move goes hand in hand with education & free information. Thus, I think religion will, and should, die by itself. It will probably take several generations, but I don't see the point in forcing anything on people. Rational thought can't be forced on people.

Still, when I see what some people here write, I'm mortified. I had all sorts of prejudice about USA & their christians. I really did expect some twisted hateful stuff.... And I haven't been disapointed. Far from it. I never in my wildest nightmares expected to see some of the things I've seen here.

I don't actually think US atheists hates god. I think they hate religious people, and lash out against them in any way they can. And I think I'd do the same, given the circumstances. Most Christians in my corner of the world, are tolerant and support a secular public space. There aren't any great battles between religion, laws and public opinion.
It's a shame the same thing can't be said about America.

I'm more curious about the "Heavenly Hash Ice Cream" ....

Hash Ice Cream? Yikes ...

I wonder if that's the corned beef variety or the marijuana variety.
