Am I the only one who doesn't give a...? Episode IV: Aruba

Prelude: The title format change is permanent, meant to let people know what they're about to waste their precious time reading. If you don't like it, I don't give a shit, so don't bother letting me know.

Today, I find myself not giving a shit about Aruba. Seriously, I am tired of hearing about that place, and I truly wish everyone would just stop fucking covering it. It's not like people being kidnapped and murdered is anything new, so I thought to myself that it must be Aruba, itself, that makes coverage of this case so damn appealing.

But who gives a shit about Aruba? I know, maybe it's their massively influential population of 72,000! Or how about its booming economy, where the GDP per capita reached an incredible high of $28,000 in 2002 - their total GDP that year, by the way, could have been increased by a factor of thirty by Bill Gates all by himself. Or maybe it's their awesome legal system that makes it so interesting, which most people should hate anyway, seeing as it smells like Gitmo.

I would sure hate to think that one dead girl is what's getting it all that fucking attention. I mean, seriously, London just got attacked and Rove made an ass of himself. Why is mention of the lack of progress in Aruba still being made? I hate that country more than Canada.

Am I the only one who doesn't give a shit?

Ontario, actually, but if I turn on the TV chances are it'll be an American station... then again, I don't turn on the TV much lately. I gather it's some sort of kidnapping you're talking about, so as I understand it you can rest assured chances that I probably don't give a shit.

Ironically, as for your London comment, that is what's on the front page of every newspaper or news site I see around here. Maybe I'm a tad self absorbed lately but I can't seem to put together much giving a shit about that either. Apathy, thou art my constant companion.

I live in ALABAMA and I don't give HALF a shit about Aruba or that girl, she's fish food stop wasting so many damn resources on it. We got what, Aruban authorities searching, FBI doing some shit, some AIRFORCE searching for her and the mom is still bitching. She wouldn't be getting any coverage if she wasn't a rich white bitch

How on earth is allowing the FBI to use Aruba as a playground going to help anything?

Want to know how many murders they generally have a year?

Eight.

Eight.

Wanna know what else happened while the media was obessed about this 16 year old rich white girl?

Two black men from NY were killed in the Virgin Islands.

Where is the outrage, the cries for support nationwide, the 24 hour news coverage for them?

I actually heard about the Aruba story in the German media... ONCE. That's more than enough. And I'm glad it wasn't on one of the respectable news shows.

Yeah, it bothers me too. She was dumb enough to seperate herself from her group late at night while intoxicated and go off with strange men. It sucks that she's dead, but a five minute blurb three weeks ago would have sufficed.

The American media loves its white women.

If everybody were like you and didn't give **** about anything else:

1. there would be no government
2. there would be no service industry
3. there would be no war
4. there would be no charities
5. there would be no human progress
6. etc. etc. etc

Okay, so the plights of many other people are ignored, but is it fair to ignore every plight?

They will actually be able to catch the piece of trash that killed her, unlike the incompetent Aruban authorities.

Two black men from NY were killed in the Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands are a US territory. It isn’t the same thing.

caring about people in general is entirely different from giving a fuck about a single rich white girl who disappeared in a foreign country and giving her shitloads of attention

I somehow doubt it. Rich, pretty blonde girls get the same amount of coverage whether they disappear in Aruba or Iowa. For some reason, the U.S. media is absolutely obsessed with rich blonde girls. (Heck, one family a while back digitally edited a photo of their missing daughter so that she would appear blonder and prettier - and it worked. Her picture made it all over the news, and she ended up being found.)

I mean, I'm very sad for this girl and her family, but it is sort of ridiculous for her disappearance to get such a disproportionate amount of airtime. Still, I'd rather hear reports about her than about "Are Brad and Angelina more than friends? OMG!!!!1!!!11!!!"

Well, the only seemingly reasonable thing that might make Aruba a place of interest was posted by Undelia on the first page, but, even so, the media covering that nonstop is not going to change anything, because Aruba probably doesn't give much of a shit about what the American media thinks, anyway. There are still other people that have been kidnapped or murdered to cover that are probably just as interesting and new.

Well, there's my just-woke-up two cents.

Oh, they care. They are almost entirely reliant on tourism. Personally, I hope this story ruins them. Americans need to be spending their vacation money in America, not on some Hawaii wanabe.

I seriously doubt it ruins them, or even hurts them. Nobody that was already planning on going to Aruba is going to say, "But wait, I just heard someone died there. Let's completely change our plans and go somewhere else." Or at least I hope no one would actually do that.

Maybe we should just go ahead and annex Aruba - get it over with. :D

Actually their hotels are almost empty and the only people in the casinos are natives. In addition, several “boycott Aruba” movements have sprung up.

I’m ticked because the FBI could have had this case closed in days, but Aruba insists on using inefficient Dutch law, and then they have the gall to protest the American media. Whatever. It can rot for all I care.

About New Jersey, yeah the Democratic Party’s gerrymandering junta really stinks.

I have nothing against the US Law enforcement used in European territories...as long as a Treaty is signed giving them the right to use their EU law enforcement in US territories.

Amazing, who would have expected that? Inefficient laws, eh? Perhaps the law should be "streamlined" to speed up the process for you, á la some third world dictatorships we could mention.
