Wow. Just....wow.

"The silicone used at the parties is often industrial-grade material like floor sealant."

Who doesn't know that this isn't safe?

Maybe we should ban public events and just make all social contact legal only through telephones and the internet (without webcams) or if the people are blindfolded or in very dark rooms...
On a serious note, this is nothing compared to a church full of women that burned to death because they all wore the same flamable wide dresses in the renaissance. People always have and always will do harmful things to make themselves prettier.

This is as stupid as those people soaking their faces in Arsenic and Lime back in the 1700's...

The answer to your first question is: Obviously!!!. And that was before reading the article. This behavior is just an extreme example of a far more widespread problem with peoples' self perception. Our obsession with appearance is destroying otherwise health peoples' self esteam.

its a very bad thing to take advantage of desperate people that way. i hope they find the person and put her in jail for a long time for whatever form of manslaughter charge is appropriate.

Transgender women often have humiliating experiences with traditional surgery clinics, and surgeons often require a psychological exam before they will consider treatment, he said.
My first thought was, 'If they're humiliating their patients, then a psychological exam is probably a good idea.' But then I realised the exam was for the patient...

Sure, I'll quote the important parts.

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) -- A 45-year-old transgender woman who received illegal silicone injections at a party in a private home in San Diego has died after nearly a month on life support, the county medical examiner said Monday.

Patricio Gonzalez, who police said received silicone injections to her hips, buttocks, cheeks and lips, died Sunday. Gonzalez and at least nine other people were injected at a so-called "pumping party" on June 19, police said.

"Pumping parties," where people seeking a more feminine appearance have silicone injected into their bodies, have been on the upswing in the last few years, experts say. The silicone used at the parties is often industrial-grade material like floor sealant.

The Food and Drug Administration banned direct injections of silicone in 1992 and the substance has been known to migrate within the body and cause chronic, degenerative illnesses.

Gonzalez and another transgender woman received more silicone than the other party guests and suffered immediate respiratory problems, prompting the Los Angeles-area woman who was administering the silicone to flee, police said. (This woman has a warrant out for her arrest)

The rest of the article explains that these "pumping parties" are on the rise and causing fatalities because they are cheaper than plastic surgery. They are also more comfortable sometimes for transgendered women because they are often humiliated when they go to try and get plastic surgery.

The article says she fled to Mexico. What that basically means is that she will never go to jail, at least for this crime.

No they're not. People have always been stupid. Just look up some of the crazy things they did in the middle ages.

Yup. I'm don't have the appearance I might like, but injecting silicone of any type (much less industrial grade) into myself is simply not an option.

Granted, I have seen studies done on some of the effects of silicone, but I really thought everyone knew it was dangerous by now.

People just need to learn to chill and like themselves. I'm not the hottest thing on the block but I'm perfectly okay with that. If you're subjecting yourself to something that dangerous in the name of vanity it's just sad.

Darwinism people, Darwinism.
Ask yourself - do we really need people around who willingly have themselves injected with floor sealent to make their bodies 'curvy'? I for one would not want them driving a car or operating heavy machinery in my vicinity.
