Many years ago I used to practice archery every single day, for a couple of years I practiced like that. Not competition though, hunting skill wise, so that I would practice from above, from below, from different angles and distances etc...

It's a good sport, all on it's own, hunting isn't required to make the Archery practice a valuable and fun hobby.

I've shot both competition and for big-game hunting (primarily moose and bear). But I haven't touched a bow now for about 3 years.

Did a bit many years ago. I started when my dad, a bowhunter, gave me and my little bro our own little fiberglass recurves for Xmas many years ago. But I haven't done anything in years. My dad and brother still do (and they both shoot and hunt with black powder muzzel loaders as well.)

Wolfish, I'm damned impressed. It must take a big paiur of brass ones to hunt bear with a bow.... Out of curiosity, what do you use for a backup?

There's a funny story there...

First time I went bow hunting for bear I was, to say the least, nervous. So nervous that I hadn't actually considered "back up." So me an a group from this archery club head up into northern Ontario (Canada) and we're all unpacking our gear...and the guys are all pulling out shotguns and such...and I'm like..."WTF!" - and they all have a good laugh at me...one overly generous guy tosses me a can of pepper spray.

So, for my first foray into hunting black bears with a bow - my backup was a 14 oz can of pepper spray.

On that trip I only actually saw one bear - took a shot that went high.

On subsequent trips I packed one of these:

OOOHHH! archery is my favourite sport! i practice allot, and i both bowhunt and do compititions(not very good at the compitions though, it's odd, i can hit a moving animal better than a target.)

I did competitive bow-shooting many years ago, but nowadays i only do shoot a longbow at larps and occasionally practice target-shooting.

LOL!

Reminds me of my backpacking trip in Alasaka. I noticed the local teacher/guide (it was a sort of inter-high-school senior trip) packing his shotgun, and asked why. All the locals were just dumbfounded that this Texas boy had never run across kodiaks or moose prior to that trip... (One of which I can pesonally say is tasty!)

I had a unit on archery in PE when I was in 8th grade. I don't know why, but I did. That's about all the experience I have.

Archery's pretty fun. I've done it a few times, and I'd like to do it some more. Alas, I don't have a convenient archery club nearby. I may start going shooting.

I've done some archery at girl scout camp before. It's not too terribly hard.
