Seeing how everytime someone starts a thread about current issues(most likely the Iraq War) I decided to bring up an old one...

The Spanish-American War, those of you who don't know what it is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_American_War

very interesting read, honestly it is!

Was the War right? or was it wrong?

Also what would'ev happened if Spain won?
Does This war relate to today? How so?

Do this thread have any point?

Hows that rhyme go...
'The Maine is to blame for the war on Spain'?
Something like that, anyway.

'S an interesting war anyway, hell, most of the wars from that period were fairly interesting. The end of the era of 'Line up and shoot' tactics.
Of course, if your interested in the period, you might want to check out Earth: Imperialism...theres a link in my sig.
God...I feel like a whore now.

I think this war shouldn't have happened personally. Yes the USS Maine blew up. However, if Americans had listened to the Spainards, they would've realized it was an accident and nothing more. Oh no, I blame the press for the war since they blamed it on the spainards and the people believed the press and thus war was declared and four months later, it was over.

Was it right? No. Was it wrong? no! It was both. Cuba needed help but the US couldn't do anything without an attack on them. Well the Maine provided that opportunity and they ran with it, ignoring the spanish evidence that it was an accident.

It was right because we eliminated Spain from Cuba as well as other spanish possessions (philippines) but wrong because it started over an accident and not mischief.

Strange way of thinking, it was right because "we"? So thought the Germans in both wars, so thought the US in Vietnam and Iraq. Why is "we" better then the "non we"?

Nothing wrong with bashing a big stick over a dying empire so we can protect our self-interest.

What kind of history? Is it formally/for a degree or more of a personal study?

Both formal education and for personal study. History is actually my secondary major.

Well, argument about right or wrong aside. You have to admit that Theodore Roosevelt had guts. He was effectively (though not officially) the head of the Naval department and he was constantly pushing for the US to got to war with Spain. And when we finally do, does he sit back like most politicians and send young men to their dooms? HELL NO! He joins the army, organizes the rough riders, and charges San Juan Hill. Now that’s a politician I can respect. Yeeha!

I don't think it was right. And with that I don't mean I think it was wrong either. But the US could have made a much better job of things afterwards, instead of letting the country become one dictatorship after another.

Why didn't the US just annex the whole thing, or work a deal out like Puerto Rico or Guam? My guess is because some very powerful interests needed place to wash dirty laundry.

That's an excellent, and very pertinent point. Several US businesses had investments in Cuba that would likely have become unprofitable if they were subject to US laws.
